Tue, Feb 26, not music, but VERY worthwhile, in L.A.:
7:30 pm “THEATER OF WITNESS,” a performing group with torture survivors who live in L.A. County, perform tonight in the community room at Mercado La Paloma, 3655 S Grand Av (just S of Jefferson), L.A. 90007.
+
Group co-founder DIANE LEFER, with HECTOR & ALESSIA CARTONI, explains, “We've been creating ‘THEATER OF WITNESS,’ a performing group with torture survivors who live in L.A. County. Theatrically, it's an experiment. These people aren't actors, they've never spoken in public before, we've had scant rehearsal time, some participants dropped out, the script keeps changing and getting simplified. But regardless, we hope to get them a supportive audience of fellow Angelenos who can recognize their courage and the challenges they face here in L.A. as they work to rebuild their lives. Everyone is invited to celebrate these extraordinary men and women from Cameroon, El Salvador, Guatemala, Russia, and Uganda.” More at www.dianelefer.weebly.com.
+
Your editor adds, “I have been humbled in the company of survivors of torture at the annual Thanksgiving Day feasts at the Learning Garden at Venice High School, at the program run bt DAVID KING. The grace and presence of many of these individuals, who have endured things we cannot even imagine, is a profoundly moving experience.”
+
There's a parking lot and usually lots of street parking. The community room is in the back of the Mercado. Walk toward Chichen Itza restaurant and make a left. No reservations needed. FREE admission.

Tue, Feb 26, in OC (Laguna Beach):
8-11 pm Weekly “SONGWRITER'S SHOWCASE” with performing host BETH FITCHET WOOD, and a lineup of performing songwriters and some recording artists “with many different musical talents” at the Marine Room, 214 Ocean Av, Laguna Beach.
+
Western music award winner JOYCE WOODSON, who played there recently, says, “Some have a great deal of professional experience and some are working up to that. Beth plays a 45 minute set first, (because she can) and then there are 3 or 4 other acts who do short sets. It's a very intimate setting, and all experiment with their new stuff. The audience is of the highest quality and the performers love playing for them.” No cover.
