"THE CINERAMA DOME'S 50th ANNIVERSARY" is being celebrated with screenings of modern classics and speaking appearances by OLIVER STONE, STEVEN SPIELBERG, MICKEY ROONEY, THORA BIRCH, MICHAEL YORK, and more, at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.

It's the 50th anniversary of one of Hollywood's most recognizable landmarks -- The Cinerama Dome, a geodesic structure boasting a screen of 32 x 86 feet with a 146 degree curve. Opened on November 7, 1963, the Dome was designed to show movies in the Cinerama process, known for its ultra-realistic projection, and is currently one of only three theaters of the kind left in the world.

For this event, they're screening modern classics in The Dome, featuring Q&As with industry luminaries, displaying exhibits, and offering tailored drink specials.
+
Here are the basic details:
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" screens Oct 22 at 6 pm, preceded by a Q&A with influential, Oscar-winning Director Steven Spielberg.

"American Beauty," winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, screens Oct 25 at 7:30 pm, with a Q&A with star and Golden Globe-nominee Thora Birch after the film.
+
'How the West Was Won," winner of the Academy Award for Best Screenplay, screens Oct 27 at 12:40 pm; it was filmed in the curved-screen Cinerama process (meaning it NEEDS to be seen on this screen) and it features a cast of Hollywood royalty, including James Stewart, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, Henry Fonda, and Karl Malden, among many.

"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" screens Oct 27 at 5 pm. The first movie ever screened at The Dome, it features the biggest comedic stars of the early 1960s in a madcap adventure, starring Spencer Tracey, Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Ethel Merman, Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney and a whole host of comedic actors. The event includes "appearances" by actors Mickey Rooney, Marvin Kaplan, and Barrie Chase.

"Logan's Run," a sci-fi classic nominated for two Academy Awards, screens Oct 29 at 7:30 pm, and includes a Q&A with star and Emmy-nominee Michael York following the film.

"JFK," winner of 5 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, screens Nov 12 at 7:30 pm, and includes a Q&A with Oliver Stone, Oscar-winning director of such films as Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, and Wall Street.

The room is wonderful-sounding, we can shush loud obnoxious people if need be, the food (yes, food!) is great and very reasonable, best burgers in town, (we have to all come see how we feel about that) and there's PARKING! Also, they have kindly accepted the fact that I might want to bake cookies occasionally. So this will be a new-ish old-ish thing, just like the concept of Ben Brown's. I hope you'll come down and have a hand in creating the new vibe."

This is an exciting young band from Tucson, Arizona. They won the prestigious "Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest" and have been featured twice this year on "A Prairie Home Companion." Brother and sister Matt (fiddle, guitar) and Grace Rolland (cello, vocals), have fiddle music running through their blood. Literally raised with bow and rosin on every bedside table, Run Boy Run was a natural fit.

The other two of the band's three female lead singers, sisters Bekah (fiddle, vocals, guitar) and Jen Sandoval (mandolin, vocals), grew-up deeply rooted in the Bluegrass festivals of Arizona, so they found a comfortable home in Run Boy Run.

To celebrate the release of "Privateering," out September 10 on UMG’s Verve Records, Mark Knopfler will play four dates on the West Coast, including this one. It's the first opportunity for fans to hear "Privateering" material live. Knopfler, who is fresh from a 70-date sold-out European tour, brings the seven-piece band that helped create "Privateering" – Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), Ian Thomas (drums) and Glenn Worf (bass).

The new music is Knopfler’s first double album of new music in his entire recording career. “The older I get, the more I want to write,” Knopfler notes. “I’m enjoying the process more than ever, writing, recording and playing live, I enjoy all of it. I’m almost tripping over songs.”

Recorded at Knopfler’s award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Privateering is a collection of tough tales of real people, living hard lives in difficult times. The record features musicians Knopfler has been working with for years and special guests including Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Kim Wilson, (harmonica), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), and rising singing star Ruth Moody, who is also a member of the leading roots group The Wailin’ Jennys.

Of the new release, Knopfler explains, “I chose to make a double album this time just because of the sheer volume of material. I didn’t want to separate songs into genres and I didn’t want to leave too many songs on the shelf. I just wanted it to be a reflection of the fantastic sessions we had. With a great bunch of players, it’s the same as a great group of actors reading a script from the page, the thing can come alive in ways it just never has before. This is the band I have been working towards my whole life.”

A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead singer-songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler combined his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess to create such major hits as “Money For Nothing,” “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Walk of Life.”

He has collaborated withthe notable artists who include Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Emmylou Harris and Van Morrison, as well as scoring several films including "Cal," "Local Hero," "Princess Bride," and "A Shot at Glory."

The "double CD" thing is one CD from each of the bands, but we're focused on Jason Daniels. And we always refrain from calling CD release shows "parties," but this one really is, with birthday cake for L.A. music scenester Kim Grant.

JASON DANIELS just made the Oct 10 cover of the Jackson Free Press as "an artist to watch."
He's just returning from the AMA conference in Nashville,TN where he played a benefit for Bonaparte's Retreat -- the animal rescue group started by Emmylou Harris.
+
His new album, "Dashboard Visions and Rearview Reflections," is a 10-song genre-bending  debut album with a mix of funky country-blues, a collection that reflects his range of influences: a bit of traditional country,blues,and jazz with a little New Orleans funk and a bit of the Caribbean thrown in. The lyrics draw on his recent events but also from years of travel and adventure. Daniels says its underlying message is for “people to get off their asses and go experience life!”

The album was recorded in East Nashville at The Bomb Shelter, the studio now famous for birthing the debut album by the Alabama Shakes. The album was recorded to 2” tape and was entirely analog up to the mixing point. Daniels enlisted Peter Keys help in playing keyboards and assembling the band, which is Jay Kott is on bass, Jeff “Shakey” Fowlkes on drums, and Daniels on guitar and vox. Other musicians lend a hand on sax, trombone and trumpet.

Jason Daniels is a transplanted Californian. He grew up in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena and has explored the Golden State’s music scene from the psychedelic sound that permeates Marin County to the country rock and blues scene of Southern California. He moved to Jackson, Mississippi, in 2012 after five years of living in Nashville. It’s his love for country, funk, blues and jazz that lead him to say, “Most of this music started in this part of the South. Maybe that’s why I’m here.”

"TMG" are accomplished studio and touring musicians / record producers and songwriters Marty Axelrod, Severin Browne, Jeff Kossack, John Stowers, Ed Tree and Jimmy “Muffin” Yessian.

In December of 2011, Jimmy "Muffin" Yessian invited five prominent Los Angeles performing songwriters to join him for a monthly gathering sharing food and original music. Each writer accepted the invitation and the group began meeting in January, 2012. The songs created during these meetings inspired the group to join together as an acoustic touring act and taking the name, Tall Men Group, because all are of elevated physical stature.

Hailed as a "Great halloween tradition," this event comes close to the season clising

Godd Greek Theatre, Los Angeles It wasn't as good as last year and for some reason there were fewer people, but it was fun nevertheless. The mix was a little off for the first song or perhaps I was just getting used to it, but it adjusted. The tale-tell heart wasn't nearly as good as it was the year before, and the kids choir was a little much, although they had two good songs for them, including one from the Harry Potter series. They added another spoken word piece this year that both me and my girlfriend really liked. I also really liked the closing John Williams piece and the mix (if you can call it that) of Bach's toccata & Fugue and Grieg's Hall of the mountain king. What was also nice was that it was a really clear night and afterwards we went up to the observatory.

Greek Theatre, Los Angeles I loved how mostly everyone, adults and children, were in costumes. The decor was great and fun. The Porsche 911 was a nice touch. Although there were children around the full bar was at a distinct area. Pinks hot dogs and nachos were yummy however they need to supply jalapenos or some type of chilies. The entertainment was great. The orchestra and the readings very entertaining. I will have a suggestion is to maybe schedule it either on a friday night or saturday night. I noticed some people left after intermission."

Handpicked by another famous pianist, Billy Joel, to star in the Broadway musical “Movin’ Out” in 2001, Cavanaugh quickly gained a reputation for his skillful talents on the piano and lead vocals rivaling those of the “Piano Man” himself. After the musical closed in 2005, he began touring on his own, reinterpreting the modern pop/rock songbook, and eventually bringing his “Songs of Billy Joel and More” to a full house at the Symphony’s Fourth of July concert in 2009. HONEYSUCKLE POSSUMS: The Honeysuckle Possums are an all-woman, old-time fiddling, mountain music, bluegrass band. They sing stunning 3 part harmonies all whilst dancing, whooping, and hollering. They are accompanied by an Appalachian style flat foot dancer, Ruth Alpert, whose percussive feet make it hard for the crowd not to dance and holler along with them. The Possums have been together for 3 incredible and busy years and will be releasing their first CD this fall. They have played all over the California coast and continue to gain notoriety wherever they play for their incredible vocals, musicianship and lively fun spirited style. They have played on the big stage at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention and will be back again playing at the festival this year by popular demand. The Possums play a combination of covers and originals ranging from old time fiddler standards to bluegrass and Irish folk music. The three main lead singers, Rebecca Troon (banjo/fiddle/penny whistle), Nicola Gordon (fiddle/ukelele) and Susan Marie Reeves (guitar/strumstick/ukelele) are all accomplished songwriters. MERLIN SNIDER: Is a singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitar player in the Americana story-telling tradition. His music is a soulful blend of folk-blues and alternative country. He is "about as fine a songwriter and story teller as you're likely to find," wrote "Wildy's World." Bob Stane, producer of The Coffee Gallery Backstage, said Merlin "is the genuine article when it comes to wit and humor . . . in other words he delivers the real goods." Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA presents a rare Los Angeles performance from saxophone great Charles Lloyd, backed by the guitar wizardry of Bill Frisell alongside Eric Harland on drums and Reuben Rogers on bass.

Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s “Dream Weaver” and “Forest Flower,” Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Over the past 20 years his extraordinary ECM albums have featured collaborations with Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins and more.

This special configuration includes key members of Lloyd’s creative and versatile “new quartet” — drummer and bandleader Eric Harland and adventurous bassist Reuben Rogers. Bill Frisell, one of “the big three” in jazz guitar (along with John Scofield and Pat Metheny) joins the ensemble for a revelatory evening of jazz performance.
