He continues, "Here, Mr. Amidon takes a wonderfully intuitive approach to adapting old-school oral folk traditions for the technological age. He's no rigid purist clinging to dog-eared songbooks -- he has an easygoing, naturalistic drawl that doesn't belie any particular tradition or style. He just sings as if he's lived with the material all his life, like a favorite blanket, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, fiddle, or banjo. Amidon has married singer Beth Orton and moved to England since his previous record, so this might be your only chance to see him for a while. Don't miss out."

Fri, Oct 11, in Beverly Hills:
9 pm ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS play "a live performance of his hits, old and new," at the Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Bl, Beverly Hills,
+
Wait. He's a hard-core rocker, right? There's that blurry Americana line again. Remember "House of the Rising Sun"-? No Depression says, "Eric Burdon is back, bigger and better than ever. It’s about time, for him and for us."
+
American Songwriter magazine writes, "[Eric Burdon's] voice is gruffly wizened but still unmistakably the person who mesmerized '60s youngsters singing 'House of the Rising Sun' with booming angst. With a top notch band behind him led by co-producer/drummer Tony Braunagel and a batch of pretty good rockers that reflect on a life filled with more ups and downs than most of us will ever experience, this is a well-earned victory lap. Eric Burdon’s river is far from running dry."
+
Eric Burdon wraps-up the summer leg of his hectic and ongoing World Tour that includes the "Bumbershoot Festival" in Seattle and this one stop in L.A.
+
Some of music's most articulate voices, from Bruce Springsteen to Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, have cited his strong influence upon their work.
+
Earlier this year, Eric released "'Til Your River Runs Dry," (on ABKCO) heralded as his most personal album to date. It has been met with critical acclaim worldwide and is making an impact on AAA radio. Hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” Eric Burdon has long been a groundbreaker while maintaining a commanding presence in music with the Animals, with WAR and simply as Eric Burdon.

+
FRANK FAIRFIELD just played rhe! Way Over Yonder" festival and his surprise accompanist was none other than ZAC SOKOLOW. Their set was, by far, the most traditional, old-timey string band folk performance of that festival.
+
Frank and Zac are a very tight duo. They play lots of lively traditional dance songs on double fiddles, double banjos, guitars, various combinations of those instruments, and they even put in a pump organ into the mix. They've recorded an album (out of print), toured together in England, and are always a delight.
+
You can call Frank Fairfield a traditionalist, and his music nostalgic. He is a high energy musician, a banjo picker, a fiddle hummer, a song singer. We’ve heard him described as someone who was discovered at a farmers market out in California, as if he were some long lost treasure or mythical land.
+
His music isn’t some deep yearning for a time long forgotten that drives Frank Fairfield. He isn’t trying to be something that no longer exists, because in fact, he DOES exist.
+
The music he plays, creates, and performs is the music that carried all of us, from all over the world, to the place we are now, wherever that place may be. He plays the American landscape, the one he himself sees and experiences. He goes about it with the only tools necessary, as any good craftsman would. Its not some ship filled with Spanish doubloons, or some ancient Amazon city of Gold, it's Frank Fairfield, a musician, a banjo picker, a man not competing with time, only living in his own.

+
It's a star-studded night of Grammy® award-winning artists -- a celebration of the life and contributions of the late Freddy Fender to mainstream, country and Tex-Mex music.
+
Hailing from a Mexican American family in a small town in Texas, Fender rose to the top of the country and pop music charts as a solo artist with a sound heavily influenced by Louisiana swamp pop. He later formed the Texas Tornados, whose sound combined Tejano, Conjunto music (originating out of south Texas, influenced by the German introduction of the button accordion), R&B, country and blues.
+
Fender paved the way for the success of contemporary Mexican American artists, and his influence continues.
+
The sweeping line-up of talent performing Fender’s music tonight includes THE TEXMANIACS, formed by MAX BACA; and American country music star RICK TREVINO, as well as local special guests LAS COLIBRI and HERMANOS HERRERA.
+
Fender’s former colleagues and band mates will perform fan favorites such as “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” and “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”

Eric Schwartz grabs you the first moment you hear him. Eric is brilliant -- he takes folk and crafts great melodies with the funniest, sharpest, and edgiest lyrics, twists it, and twists it again. In the purest tradition of folk as social, political, and protest music, Eric harpoons all the idiocy in America with such infectious joy. So you'll laugh yourself silly, but it's never an exercise in silliness. Then, Eric will craft a ballad so beautiful and perfect your heart will ache. His new CD "Aristocrat" just came out. Wed, Oct 23, in Long Beach:
8 pm MARK KNOPFLER plays the Long Beach Terrace Theater.
+
To celebrate the release of "Privateering," out September 10 on UMG’s Verve Records, Mark Knopfler will play four dates on the West Coast, including this one. It's the first opportunity for fans to hear "Privateering" material live. Knopfler, who is fresh from a 70-date sold-out European tour, brings the seven-piece band that helped create "Privateering" – Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), Ian Thomas (drums) and Glenn Worf (bass).
+
The new music is Knopfler’s first double album of new music in his entire recording career. “The older I get, the more I want to write,” Knopfler notes. “I’m enjoying the process more than ever, writing, recording and playing live, I enjoy all of it. I’m almost tripping over songs.”
+
Recorded at Knopfler’s award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Privateering is a collection of tough tales of real people, living hard lives in difficult times. The record features musicians Knopfler has been working with for years and special guests including Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Kim Wilson, (harmonica), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), and rising singing star Ruth Moody, who is also a member of the leading roots group The Wailin’ Jennys.
+
Of the new release, Knopfler explains, “I chose to make a double album this time just because of the sheer volume of material. I didn’t want to separate songs into genres and I didn’t want to leave too many songs on the shelf. I just wanted it to be a reflection of the fantastic sessions we had. With a great bunch of players, it’s the same as a great group of actors reading a script from the page, the thing can come alive in ways it just never has before. This is the band I have been working towards my whole life.”
+
A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead singer-songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler combined his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess to create such major hits as “Money For Nothing,” “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Walk of Life.”
+
He has collaborated withthe notable artists who include Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Emmylou Harris and Van Morrison, as well as scoring several films including "Cal," "Local Hero," "Princess Bride," and "A Shot at Glory."

Sat, Oct 26, in Beverly Hills:
Time tba Blues prodigy JONNY LANG plays the California Canyon Theater in Beverly Hills.
+
He has only this one local date on his current world tour.
+
He's touring his first new studio album in seven years, "Fight For My Soul," which comes out Sep 17 on Concord Records, and it's getting fine reviews.
+
Lang’s songwriting on "Fight For My Soul," the follow up to his 2006 GRAMMY Award-winning "Turn Around," takes a major leap forward, as he explores the struggle for love and family with startling heart and depth.
+
The Wall Street Journal, who premiered the album with a pre-release album stream observed, “Lang has done plenty of growing up since his precocious teenage years, and it shows in the 11 songs on 'Fight for My Soul'.”
+
USA Today calls “Blew Up (The House)”, the album’s first single, “…an incendiary blues-rock stomper about taking extreme measures to make a fresh start.”
+
“This album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” offers Lang. “Some of these songs may surprise people, but that’s what it's all about. It keeps it fresh, and it keeps me growing. Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on record so far. Much of what I've experienced through music and life in general is in these songs.”
+
Lang has toured non-stop since his first major label album "Lie To Me" was released in 1997 when he was 16. That won him a large and incredibly loyal audience, along with a well deserved reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation.
+
Now in the midst of touring to support the new album, Jonny will make a special hometown "CD Release Day" stop in Fargo, North Dakota at The Fargo Theatre. Fargo may not be a blues town, but it will be that day.

7:30 pm-1 am "BUNNYNOSE HALLOWEEN RAREBIT GHOUL" show at TRiP, 2101 Lincoln Bl, Santa Monica 90405.
+
This seems an appropriately weird event for the Saturday before Halloween. You can "'Stume yourself up in them cowboy stud and / or slavegirl duds, or come as your inner hippie princess or a mountain-hugging karma dude. Or build yourself a papier mache rocketship to enclose yourself in. There ain't no limit to your creativity AND there ain't no damn Sunday Night Football on Saturday night," asserts D. Whitney Quinn.
+
The music starts at 8 pm sharp. Arrive by 7:30 for the best seats. The evening starts with a short set by piano-songwriting practitioner D. Whitney Quinn (https://myspace.com/dwhitneyquinn).
+
Next up, for a short set, are the Mike Randle Westside All-Stars; you never know what you'll get from Seaside Michael except it'll be good.
+
Following the All-Stars is Michael Miller (http://michaelmillercrusade.com/) with his rich textural songs.
+
After Michael, it's Bunnynose (http://bunnynose.net), followed by Johnny Rad and the Eggplants and Sexy Black and the One Percent.
+
Virgilia's Taco Truck will be out front, so consider saving your appetite for some of her tacos and tortas. Quinn says, "Her food is better than most restaurants at a substantial savings of moneys."
+
TRiP is always FREE - no cover charge to see interesting bands on the west side. Parking is free on the street after 6 pm, but come early to get the closest parking.
+
TRiP serves a variety of craft and gourmet beers and a selection of gold-medal wines.
+
"A prize may be awarded to the costume the Bunnynose band deems the most interesting and coolest," adds Quinn.

D. Whitney Quinn will be accompanied by John O'Kennedy on guitar.

Oct 26, in L.A.:
8 pm MARK KNOPFLER plays the Wiltern Theater in L.A.

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules of performances in Southern California venues large and small. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kids o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to proto blues.
