Wed, Oct 16, in Altadena:
8 pm LAURA REBOLLOSO brings socially-conscious folk music to the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
This is a show concerning social change and an examination, in music, of one of our South Of The Border concerns, from an artist of substance and accomplishment.
+
Poet, troubadour, and virtuoso musician Laura Rebolloso's music is rooted in the 400-year-old Son Jarocho folk tradition of Veracruz, Mexico. Laura is a leading composer and songwriter on the vanguard of the new Jarocho movement. Laura was a founding member of the pioneering group Son de Madera and now leads her on Ensemble Marinero. She has just released a new cd of socially consciousness songs entitled 'Por la Esperanza de Mexico' (Hope for Mexico). Her provoking and poetic lyrics are delivered by a powerful and sonorous voice and accompanied by her instrument of specialty the 'leona' a rarely heard bass guitar of the Jarocho tradition. Laura is very much representing some very important artistic thinking in Mexico right now and it would be wonderful for her (and the audiences) to be heard outside her normal circles in a fresh context.
+
Here's an audio link (mp3 attached) of a beautiful song of hers released on her new album, and a video link with another song of Laura's:
