+
"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" screens Oct 27 at 5 pm. Debra Davis writes hooky Americana-rock songs that hit deep. The singer/songwriter and her Band of Gold are powerfully fun live, and have a big international following of fans who call themselves “debheads.” Debra is a storyteller---her songs make you think and feel…and sing along. Songs from Debra’s 3 CDs have been featured on numerous TV shows and films, and her latest features a duet with 5-time Grammy winner Christopher Cross. She recently wrote the new theme song, “Girl of the World,” for the Global Girl Media organization, and she was featured on “Angel Encounters” (The Nashville Network), which explored the stories behind her songs. Debra has toured nationwide playing festivals and venues like Summerfest, the Bluebird in Nashville, Bluebird’s stage at Countryfest, House of Blues, the Troubadour, the Coach House, Palm Springs PRIDE, LA Marathon, and Revlon Run/Walk. She’s opened for such artists as Christopher Cross, Edwin McCain, and Collective Soul. Her songs are on several compilation CDs for good causes, including “Artists Against Cancer,“ “It’s About Eve” for breast cancer research, and “Home” for Children International. Band of Gold members play or have played and recorded with Melissa Etheridge, Christopher Cross, Glenn Frey, Loggins & Messina, The Motels, Nels Kline Trio, Joe Walsh and Wilson Phillips. With Nick Kirgo playing emotive slide on acoustic guitar, Wade Biery on bass and high harmonies, the nimble-fingered Bob Emmet on keys, and Debra’s built-in hubby/drummer Dave Beyer laying down the foundation, Debra’s music will at once take you on a journey of wit and reflection, and and feel like a neighborly chat over a picket fence.

a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick,
in Beverly Hills:
Time tba  Blues prodigy JONNY LANG plays the Saban California Canyon Theater in Beverly Hills.
+
He has only this one local date on his current world tour.
+
He's touring his first new studio album in seven years, "Fight For My Soul," which comes out Sep 17 on Concord Records, and it's getting fine reviews.
+
Lang’s songwriting on "Fight For My Soul," the follow up to his 2006 GRAMMY Award-winning "Turn Around," takes a major leap forward, as he explores the struggle for love and family with startling heart and depth.
+
The Wall Street Journal, who premiered the album with a pre-release album stream observed, “Lang has done plenty of growing up since his precocious teenage years, and it shows in the 11 songs on 'Fight for My Soul'.”
+
USA Today calls “Blew Up (The House)”, the album’s first single, “…an incendiary blues-rock stomper about taking extreme measures to make a fresh start.”
+
“This album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” offers Lang. “Some of these songs may surprise people, but that’s what it's all about. It keeps it fresh, and it keeps me growing. Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on record so far. Much of what I've experienced through music and life in general is in these songs.”
+
Lang has toured non-stop since his first major label album "Lie To Me" was released in 1997 when he was 16. That won him a large and incredibly loyal audience, along with a well deserved reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation.
+
Now in the midst of touring to support the new album, Jonny will make a special hometown "CD Release Day" stop in Fargo, North Dakota at The Fargo Theatre. Fargo may not be a blues town, but it will be that day.

7:30 pm  SHANA MORRISON & JOHN STEWART BAND members JOHN HOKE, BOB HAWKINS, ANDY HILL, & DAVE BATTI, play "JIMMY DUKE'S DARK 30 CONCERTS," 11132 Pinehurst Dr, Lakeside 92040; 619-443- 9622; www.darkthirty.com
+
Shana Morrison’s musical style has been called pop with a side of blues and a side of rock. She has also been known to include other ingredients, like country, R&B, and jazz into the mix. Her material seems to be ever-changing and hard to pin down categorically. What always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice.
+
Shana Morrison began performing with her group CALEDONIA in the San Francisco Bay area in 1996. Her debut CD, "Caledonia," was released on her own label, Belfast Violet Records, in 1998, and picked up by the Monster Music label in 1999. "Caledonia" received favorable reviews from the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Francisco Examiner, as well as airplay on KPFA, KPIG, KPIX, KDVS, KHUM, and KFOG. Tours across the country soon followed.
+
Vanguard Records signed Shana in 2001, and "7 Wishes" was released in 2002. This time, she received favorable reviews from newspapers and magazines across the country, as well as airplay on KMTT in Seattle; KINK in Portland, Oregon; KSGR in Austin, Texas; and KBCO in Denver.
+
Since 1996, Shana has participated in benefit concerts for Oakland's American Legends Foundation. Paying tribute to and playing for artists who include Brownie McGee and Charles Brown, Shana has shared billing with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, and Dr. John. She has also played for festival audiences on the main stage both at the Guinness Fleadh in New York in 1997, and in San Francisco in 1999. In 2000, Shana performed at the San Francisco Blues Festival, the Ottawa Blues Festival, and the Edmonton Folk Festival. Recently she has had the type of exposure she deserves, opening shows for Lyle Lovett, Joe Cocker, Michael MacDonald, John Hyatt, Keb 'Mo, and Bob Weir.
+
Shana's international exposure includes a live broadcast for the BBC's "Kelly Show" and an appearance at the BRIT Awards in 1996, when her father was presented with a lifetime-achievement award. This has been broadcast on A&E in America several times since. She also participated in a VH1 Father's Day special and was featured in "People" magazine in 1997, "Rolling Stone" in 1999, and in "Interview," as well as on the Oxygen channel's "Pure Oxygen," and on "The Howard Stern Show" in 2002.
+
Since 2002, the band has been busy with tours across the United States, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and the UK, playing radio shows, clubs, theaters, and festivals, most notably playing the Warfield in San Francisco, the Viper Room in Los Angeles, the House of Blues in Cambridge, the Bottom Line in New York, Meinisfree Open Air in Germany, the Arezzo Wave Pop festival in Italy, the Borderline in London, the Cork Jazz Festival, the Galway Arts Festival, and The Late Late Show in Ireland.
+
2006 through 2008 saw Shana singing beside Van Morrison again during his U.S. and U.K. tour dates. Twelve years have passed since her beginnings singing duets with Mr. Morrison in his Rhythm and Soul Review, which featured artists such as Jimmy Withersoon, Junior Wells, and John Lee Hooker.
+
Since her first foray into recording on the Van Morrison releases "A Night in San Francisco" (1994) and "Days Like This" (1995), Shana Morrison has grown as a singer, a songwriter, and an artist. Her self-produced 2007 release, the R&B-flavored CD "That's Who I Am," is on Belfast Violet Records. "Joyride,! produced by Kim McLean, was released in April 2010, also on Belfast Violet Records. Both albums are available online at iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby.

Sat, Oct 26,
a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick,
in L.A.:
8 pm MARK KNOPFLER plays the Wiltern Theater in L.A.
+
To celebrate the release of "Privateering," out September 10 on UMG’s Verve Records, Mark Knopfler will play four dates on the West Coast, including this one. It's the first opportunity for fans to hear "Privateering" material live. Knopfler, who is fresh from a 70-date sold-out European tour, brings the seven-piece band that helped create "Privateering" – Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), Ian Thomas (drums) and Glenn Worf (bass).
+
The new music is Knopfler’s first double album of new music in his entire recording career. “The older I get, the more I want to write,” Knopfler notes. “I’m enjoying the process more than ever, writing, recording and playing live, I enjoy all of it. I’m almost tripping over songs.”
+
Recorded at Knopfler’s award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Privateering is a collection of tough tales of real people, living hard lives in difficult times. The record features musicians Knopfler has been working with for years and special guests including Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Kim Wilson, (harmonica), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), and rising singing star Ruth Moody, who is also a member of the leading roots group The Wailin’ Jennys.
+
Of the new release, Knopfler explains, “I chose to make a double album this time just because of the sheer volume of material. I didn’t want to separate songs into genres and I didn’t want to leave too many songs on the shelf. I just wanted it to be a reflection of the fantastic sessions we had. With a great bunch of players, it’s the same as a great group of actors reading a script from the page, the thing can come alive in ways it just never has before. This is the band I have been working towards my whole life.”
+
A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead singer-songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler combined his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess to create such major hits as “Money For Nothing,” “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Walk of Life.”
+
He has collaborated withthe notable artists who include Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Emmylou Harris and Van Morrison, as well as scoring several films including "Cal," "Local Hero," "Princess Bride," and "A Shot at Glory."

+
"TMG" are accomplished studio and touring musicians / record producers and songwriters Marty Axelrod, Severin Browne, Jeff Kossack, John Stowers, Ed Tree and Jimmy “Muffin” Yessian.
+
In December of 2011, Jimmy "Muffin" Yessian invited five prominent Los Angeles performing songwriters to join him for a monthly gathering sharing food and original music. Each writer accepted the invitation and the group began meeting in January, 2012. The songs created during these meetings inspired the group to join together as an acoustic touring act and taking the name, Tall Men Group, because all are of elevated physical stature.
+
In November 2012, they toured the West coast as far north as Hillsboro, Oregon and back. The overwhelming audience response and success of that tour prompted the band to begin production on their first CD, "12 x 6," being released at this concert.
+
Library Director Steve Brogden says, “When we set this date, neither the band nor I were aware of the interesting synchronicity surrounding the timing for this special night. TMG did not realize they had given their very first live performance on October 26th 2012, just one year earlier to the day. Once the band discovered this amazing coincidence, a sense of Kismet settled in on them and they knew this was to be a truly special evening filled with musical magic. We look forward to sharing this extraordinary evening with you."
+
Brogden continues, "I've seen The Talls twice and they will knock you out with their lyrics, vocal harmonies, and humor. It should be illegal to have that much fun on stage!"

+
Formed out of their work together on Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning album “The Mosaic Project,” the small ensemble stretches boundaries and revels in the art form.
+
ACS -- Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Esperanza Spalding -- gathers three of the most important female instrumentalists in current jazz. In response to their debut at New York’s legendary Village Vanguard, The Village Voice remarked, “the set’s expressionistic push-pull turned out to be a show of jazz fealty as disorienting as it was riveting.” The trio is elegant, experimental, and unquestionably bold.

Here are some comments by attendees:
+
“Los Angeles It wasn't as good as last year and for some reason there were fewer people, but it was fun nevertheless. The mix was a little off for the first song or perhaps I was just getting used to it, but it adjusted. The tale-tell heart wasn't nearly as good as it was the year before, and the kids choir was a little much, although they had two good songs for them, including one from the Harry Potter series. They added another spoken word piece this year that both me and my girlfriend really liked. I also really liked the closing John Williams piece and the mix (if you can call it that) of Bach's toccata & Fugue and Grieg's Hall of the mountain king. What was also nice was that it was a really clear night and afterwards we went up to the observatory.”
+
Another attendee wrote: “I loved how mostly everyone, adults and children, were in costumes. The decor was great and fun. The Porsche 911 was a nice touch. Although there were children around the full bar was at a distinct area. Pinks hot dogs and nachos were yummy however they need to supply jalapenos or some type of chilies. The entertainment was great. The orchestra and the readings very entertaining. I will have a suggestion is to maybe schedule it either on a Friday night or Saturday night. I noticed some people left after intermission."
+
Review from "asnoopyb516," Greek Theatre, Los Angeles: "This has quickly become a family tradition. We went last year and again this year. Maestro Rubenstein was funny and fabulous. The music program was awesome, and both Anne Marie Johnson and Robert Hayes gave incredible readings. I would highly recommend going to next year's event!"
+
Review from "ldcoultre," Greek Theatre, Los Angeles: "Love this event! Close, affordable, family-friendly. A lot of fun and a lot of wonderful music we don't get to hear anywhere else. Thank you again to all the sponsors, the artists, and the participants for a lovely evening!"

Fri-Sun, Nov 1-3,
on broadcast & web radio:
"MIGHTY MET WEEKEND" on 100.3 The Sound from L.A. brings back from the dead, in time for Dia de Los Muertos, the long-lost lamented greatest rock & roll radio station in the world -- with most of the original air staff, and beloved characters like "Dr. Leon" ("abba-loot-lee!")
+
Remember when "A little bit o' heaven, 94.7, KMET, reedle-dee!" was everybody's favorite radio jingle?
+
Before the official announcement, the Guide received the word early. Here's what we know so far:
+
JEFF GONZER and ACE YOUNG will kick it off at 3 pm Friday, Nov 1. Then, more of your favorite KMET DJs will rock it all weekend, right up through the return of DR. DEMENTO at 6 pm on Sunday, Nov 3.
+
CYNTHIA FOX says, "The on-air schedule is still taking shape – and we’ll be announcing more details soon – but, for now… JEFF GONZER, ACE YOUNG, DR. DEMENTO, JACK SNYDER, PARAQUAT KELLEY, RICK LEWIS, RICK SCARRY, BILLY JUGGS, DR. LEON, FRAZER SMITH, RAUOOL, DAVID PERRY, and yours truly are IN!"
+
She adds, "Oh, and… What would a Mighty Met Weekend be without the return of JIM LADD to local FM, on loan from... SiriusXM Satellite Radio?"
+
It'll be global in the web at:
+
http://thesoundla.com/
+
Before the "Big Broadcast of 2013" gets here, you can leave them a voicemail with your own Mighty Met memories by calling 888-993-9994. They may use yours on the radio.
+
This will occasion parties and gatherings of KMET's legendary "Immoral Minority," no doubt with the recorded voice of Ronald Reagan yelling, "Aw, Shut-Up!" (You had to be there. But now you can.)
+
Meantime, you can buy PARAQUAT KELLEY’s book, "And There Will Always Be Termites," on Amazon for only $9.99.  Cynthia Fox says, "In the face of incredible adversity, Pat keeps us laughing. I know his book will inspire you, just as he does all of us who worked with him at KMET."
+
Just released October 18, 2013, the book is the autobiographical tale of "A golden couple" who travels from celebrity to wheelchair on a journey of survival, reinvention, and inspiration. This is the compelling and powerful story of PATRICK KELLEY and MELODY ROGERS.
+
Patrick Kelley gained fame as a breakthrough radio star. He was so successful that his radio name -- Paraquat -- strange and edgy at first, became well-known and accepted both on and off the air. He fell in love with and married Melody Rogers, who is legendary in Los Angeles broadcasting.
+
Patrick has been battling an insidious disease for too many years now. While it may have physically brought him to his knees at times, he stands taller than ever — sharply observant and never losing that famous Patrick Kelley sense of humor.
+
"And There Will Always Be Termites" is the real adventure told by Patrick and Melody in their own words. It's a bumpy ride at times, but you're not going to want to get off. The book is available at:
+
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G0ZQRTM/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
+
(amazon.com, ASIN: B00G0ZQRTM); Text-to-Speech is available for Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle (2nd generation), and Kindle DX. $9.99.
+
And as Paraquat would say, "WHOO-YA!"

+
THREE OF A KIND is Wes Wright, Phil Schwadron, & Steven Schwadron. Having played together for the better part of the last eight years as members of The Poxy Boggards, this trio has begun branching-out on their own to bring the best of their original and traditional Celtic-flavored songs to the local public houses.
+
Wes (guitar and harmonica), Phil (field drum and keyboards), and Steven (mandolin and bass guitar) have developed their instrumental talents over the years at Renaissance Faires, Celtic Festivals and local music venues. They have also honed their ability to harmonize in the best styles of the classic folk groups of the '60s and '70s, and have crafted arrangements that demonstrate the joy of blending three voices into one. Three of a Kind's first CD, titled "ALL IN," is currently being recorded and scheduled for release in early 2014.
+
Plus,
SPORTIVE TRICKS plays Celtic Folk with a Kick. A Southern California folk-rock band with a heavy Irish influence, The Tricks take great delight in giving traditional music a strong beat and an interesting twist. They also play many original tunes, both serious and silly.
+
The band started as performers at the Renaissance Faire, but the music you'll hear just hints at these beginnings. Their music leans towards bands like Great Big Sea and Gaelic Storm with influences ranging from The Chieftains to Flogging Molly.
+
Drawing on the rich traditions of Irish, Scottish & English folk, Cape Breton music and sea shanties played on traditional instruments with new arrangements, high energy and a dash of humor for a foot tapping, hand clapping, good time.

Le Salon de Musiques A.SCHOENBERG Composer & Painter, to his friend V.KANDINSKY:
". . . I am sure that our work has much in common – and indeed in the most important respects: In what you call the ‘unlogical’ and I call the ‘elimination of the conscious will in art’. . . . Every formal procedure which aspires to traditional effects is not completely free from conscious motivation. But art belongs to theunconscious! One must express oneself! Express oneself directly! Not one’s taste, or one’s upbringing, or one’s intelligence, knowledge or skill. Not all theseacquired characteristics, but that which is inborn, instinctive. . . . But whoever is capable of listening to himself, recognizing his own instincts, and also engrossing himself reflectively in every problem, will not need such crutches. One does not need to be a pioneer to create in this way, only a man who takes himself seriously – and thereby takes seriously that which is the true task of humanity in every intellectual or artistic field: to recognize, and to express what one has recognized!!! This is my belief.”

7:30 pm "JOHNNY CASH:The THE LIFE" is a Book Discussion with author ROBERT HILBURN at the GRAMMY Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl (entrance on Figueroa), L.A. 90015.
+
FREE, reservation required.
+
Having just marked the 10 year anniversary of Johnny Cash’s death this, his status as one of the greatest music legends continues to grow. In "Johnny Cash: The Life" (Little, Brown; Oct 29, 2013), veteran music journalist Robert Hilburn writes the long-awaited, definitive biography on Cash. It is the book Cash’s millions of fans have been waiting for, and it is the book that will lead a new generation to discover his incredible musical legacy.
+
Hilburn, one of the most widely read and respected pop music writers, was the music critic for the Los Angeles Times for more than three decades. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee, he has reported extensively on music legends, including Bob Dylan, Elton John, Bruce Springrsteen, U2, Michael Jackson, and John Lennon.
+
Hillburn knew Cash well, reporting on him at many different points in his career from the legendary Folsom Prison concert in 1968 — where he was the only music journalist attending — to his wrenching last days.
+
In "Johnny Cash: The Life," Hilburn tells the complete story of Johnny Cash for the first time. Hilburn treats Cash with the critical eye and historical scholarship that an artist of his stature deserves.
+
Despite his enormous popularity, and cross-over appeal (with the rare honor of induction in the Country, Rock and Roll and Gospel Hall of Fames), Cash was an even more important and influential artist and a more complex, troubled person than even his biggest fans have realized yet. Hilburn shares a trove of never-before-seen material, straight from the singer’s inner circle of family and friends.
+
The GRAMMY Museum welcomes Hilburn to the Clive Davis Theater to discuss the phenomenal career of Johnny Cash, as well as the development of the book, just days after its release. After the discussion, moderated by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, Hilburn will sign copies of the book.
+
Admission is free; reservations required. Museum members receive priority seating. To reserve your seats, e-mail programs@grammymuseum.org.

7:30 pm  "DIVIDED & UNITED - MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR" is the latest in the live performance series, "The Drop," at the GRAMMY Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl Ste. A245 (entrance on Figueroa), Los Angeles 90015; 213-765-6800;  www.grammymuseum.com
+
This one is truly an unusual cause to celebrate: An all-star project with music that's a hundred and fifty years old? Yep.
+
Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, T Bone Burnett, Chris Hillman, John Doe, Lee Ann Womack, and other music luminaries are on this album.
+
"Divided & United" is technically a cover album, but you aren't likely to own any of the originals. After inspiration struck while on location in Nashville (and with some help from a "Tennessean" newspaper cover story) Randall Poster, a music supervisor best known for his work with Wes Anderson, Martin Scorcese and Todd Haynes, set about curating an anniversary tribute album of classic Civil War songs.
+
Teaming up with ATO Records, Poster hand-picked the performers to participate in the project.
+
After extensive research in collaboration with master bluegrass guitarist Bryan Sutton, Poster assembled a collection of songs to "represent hope and loss, camaraderie and compassion, and the distinct voices of the North and South; born out of specific battles and turning points" including but not limited to "sentimental, parlor songs and spirituals of the period, songs that soldiers brought into battle with them, abolition and minstrel songs.
+
Exploring the country's deep musical history and revitalized by artists themselves through this part of its continued evolution comrs "Divided & United." It offers a "unique window on the past, with themes exploring race, identity and reconciliation in a manner that echoes profoundly today."
+
To help celebrate the release, the GRAMMY Miseum presents a panel discussion, and live music performance. The panel is moderated by Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman. It will explore the making of the album, featuring panelists Poster, Chris Hillman, John Doe and Lee Ann Womack. After the panel, Hillman, Doe and Womack will perform.
+
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in person at the Museum Box Office or online. All proceeds benefit The GRAMMY Museum. American Express is the exclusive payment method for advance tickets. Doors at 7 pm.

Praised as “the new voice of the American rock-and-roll songbook” (Billboard) with both Grammy- and Tony-award nominations, charismatic performer Michael Cavanaugh opens Pacific Symphony’s 35th anniversary Pops season with crowd-pleasing pop and rock piano hits during his new show, “Michael Cavanaugh: Songs of Elton John and More.”
+
Handpicked by another famous pianist, Billy Joel, to star in the Broadway musical “Movin’ Out” in 2001, Cavanaugh quickly gained a reputation for his skillful talents on the piano and lead vocals rivaling those of the “Piano Man” himself. After the musical closed in 2005, he began touring on his own, reinterpreting the modern pop/rock songbook, and eventually bringing his “Songs of Billy Joel and More” to a full house at the Symphony’s Fourth of July concert in 2009. Cavanaugh returns to bring his exuberant energy to the music of the “Rocket Man,” for a performance of songs such as “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Benny and the Jets,” “Daniel,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Candle in the Wind” and more—all backed by the lush sounds of the Symphony.

HONEYSUCKLE POSSUMS: The Honeysuckle Possums are an all-woman, old-time fiddling, mountain music, bluegrass band. They sing stunning 3 part harmonies all whilst dancing, whooping, and hollering. They are accompanied by an Appalachian style flat foot dancer, Ruth Alpert, whose percussive feet make it hard for the crowd not to dance and holler along with them. The Possums have been together for 3 incredible and busy years and will be releasing their first CD this fall. They have played all over the California coast and continue to gain notoriety wherever they play for their incredible vocals, musicianship and lively fun spirited style. They have played on the big stage at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention and will be back again playing at the festival this year by popular demand. The Possums play a combination of covers and originals ranging from old time fiddler standards to bluegrass and Irish folk music. The three main lead singers, Rebecca Troon (banjo/fiddle/penny whistle), Nicola Gordon (fiddle/ukelele) and Susan Marie Reeves (guitar/strumstick/ukelele) are all accomplished songwriters. Lisa Macker plays stand up bass and mandolin and sings harmonies and Ruth Alpert is the band’s percussive flat-footer. They can’t help but smile while they sing as you’ll see by their beaming faces. Sabrina adds her honey-sweet vocals and dynamic stage presents along with percussion and ukulele. They have delighted audiences at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, LA Wim Soiree, The M Bar, Kulak’s Woodshed and Fireside. They are also the founders and performing hosts of the Acoustic L.A.-Live monthly show. More at www.sabrinaandcraig.com

MERLIN SNIDER: Is a singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitar player in the Americana story-telling tradition. His music is a soulful blend of folk-blues and alternative country. He is "about as fine a songwriter and story teller as you're likely to find," wrote "Wildy's World." Bob Stane, producer of The Coffee Gallery Backstage, said Merlin "is the genuine article when it comes to wit and humor . . . in other words he delivers the real goods." It sounds like roots music, but the lyrics have a modern edge, honesty and sense of humor." Snider's second album, Right Here, was among the Top Folk Albums for 2009, as reported on Folkradio.org. And Folkworks.org heralded Right Here as “a ‘must have’ for connoisseurs of the singer-songwriter, folk genre.” Snider was a Premiere Showcase Artist at the Folk Alliance Region West 2009 Conference, and has performed at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, Fireside Concerts in Newbury Park, Camarillo Café, as well as Boulevard Music, Noble House Concerts, The Underwood Family Farms Folk Festival, Acoustic L.A. Live!, at Hallenbeck’s General Store, and the West Valley Music Center Acoustic Series. Merlin is accompanied by Deborah Snider on backup vocals and percussion along with the rest of his Pretty Good Acquaintances. More at www.merlinsnider.com

+
What started as a drunken joke for Finnerty singing "I Am Woman" at a karaoke bar has spiraled out of control into The Dan Band - a cult hit that has garnered rave reviews from The New York Times, The L.A. Times, Variety, and Rolling Stone, and prompted Entertainment Weekly to name them “one of the hottest tickets in Hollywood.”

Their TV concert special "The Dan Band: I Am Woman" aired on Bravo and was directed by McG and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. They've appeared on numerous TV shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Late Show, Last Call with Carson Daly, Ellen, Spike TV's Guys Choice Awards and The Tonight Show, where Finnerty has been featured as a regular correspondent. The Dan Band plays to sold-out crowds all across the country and has released two albums “The Dan Band Live” followed by “HO – A Dan Band X-MAS." SNOWAPPLE is the trio of Una, Laurien & Fanny. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Get ready to fall in love with a Dutch Treat. Once again The Coffee Gallery Backstage brings in European charm and fantastic music and show. Where does Bob get these super talents to travel across the Atlantic and journey over all of America to that cute bistro in Altadena? Magic and blackmail. Easy for Bob. Those who were lucky enough to see The Crystal Trio from Siberia, can appreciate the cross cultural talents brought to this area by The Coffee Gallery Backstage. No need to travel. Bob will bring them to you."

To make it even more charming, the lovely ladies will count on the generosity and good will of their American cousins by not charging admission. Yes, a donation will do. What trust. Donations to see them perform? Highly unusual at this superb venue, but yes.
+
"These three talented young multi-instrumentalists and singers from Amsterdam are full of musical surprises. They charm their audiences with sweet harmonies, light up-beat numbers with a country feel and most of all their quirky delivery, that ranges from joyful exuberance to darkly ethereal punk. Snowapple's music is infectious and has a feel-good quality that will put a smile on your face and get your feet tapping." -- Rina Vergano, Venue magazine.

Fri, Nov 15, at UCLA:
8 pm CHARLES LLOYD & FRIENDS play the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) series in Royce Hall at UCLA.
+
“A technical descendant of John Coltrane and Dewey Redman, tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd has a way of touching the soul with his tender, folk-tinged melodies.” -- Seattle Times.
+
“There has not been a saxist whose work is this spiritual since John Coltrane and Albert Ayler.” --The Boston Globe
+
Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA presents a rare Los Angeles performance from saxophone great Charles Lloyd, backed by the guitar wizardry of Bill Frisell alongside Eric Harland on drums and Reuben Rogers on bass.
+
Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s “Dream Weaver” and “Forest Flower,” Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Over the past 20 years his extraordinary ECM albums have featured collaborations with Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins and more.
+
This special configuration includes key members of Lloyd’s creative and versatile “new quartet” — drummer and bandleader Eric Harland and adventurous bassist Reuben Rogers. Bill Frisell, one of “the big three” in jazz guitar (along with John Scofield and Pat Metheny) joins the ensemble for a revelatory evening of jazz performance.
+
“Music is a healing force,” the 75-year-old Lloyd says. “It has the ability to transcend boundaries, it can touch the heart directly; it can speak to a depth of the spirit where no words are needed. It is a most powerful form of communication and expression of beauty. We must go forward, all the great ones that went before us insisted on this. For each generation, it is incumbent upon us to rise up and sing the song - the journey and pursuit is unending.”
+
Tix: general tickets ($30-$50) are available at cap.ucla.edu, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 310-825-2101, or in person at the UCLA Central Ticket Office located in the southwest corner of the James West Alumni Center.
