ASH GROVE RETURNS FOR A DAY, SATURDAY, ON ITS ORIGINAL 1958-1973 SITE
On Saturday, July 11, from 1:30-4:30 pm (a half-hour earlier than previously announced) the legendary mecca of folk music and the counter-culture will resurrect itself for the “ASH GROVE BENEFIT CONCERT,” with performances by DAVE & PHIL ALVIN, THE BERNIE PEARL BLUES BAND featuring BARBARA MORRISON, LEN CHANDLER, GET LIT PLAYERS, and THE NEW ASH GROVE PLAYERS featuring CLAUDIA LENNEAR & SS JONES. And the address where it will happen is the Ash Grove’s own former home, which has for many years been the landmark address of the Hollywood Improv, at 8162 Melrose Av, Los Angeles 90048.
The long-gone and justifiably legendary Ash Grove celebrates its 57th birthday on the actual day of its long-ago opening, July 11th, with a show of marvelous and successful artists worthy of the storied acts it booked so long ago. The club’s founder, Ed Pearl, has been most interested in talking about someone who will not be there, and whose presence will be especially missed. That is Guy Carawan, who made the trip from his North Carolina home with longtime wife Candi for an Ash Grove Foundation event a few years ago.
“Guy Carawan was the first person on our stage, performing, and host Brownie McGhee, and Geronimo Villerino the legendary guitarist and my flamenco teacher. Guy played an major role in my musical growth, and the Ash Grove,” recalls Pearl.
There will be special attention to the memory of Guy Carawan, a Civil Rights Movement leader and lifelong peace activist, who passed away in May. Pearl says, “Candi and Guy wrote a wonderful book – ‘Sing for Freedom – The Story of the Civil Rights Movement through its Songs.’ They, uniquely, traveled throughout the south, recording choirs at churches and meetings involved in the mass movement.”
Along with the impressive musical lineup, you can bet on some revealing tales from Ed Pearl. There aren’t many people out there who booked Lightnin’ Hopkins, Elizabeth Cotton, and Sonny Terry, all in L.A., and who served coffee to a young Jackson Browne while he was waiting to play some freshly-written songs no one had ever heard.

FOLK ALLIANCE FAR-WEST “BEST OF THE WEST AMBASSADOR AWARD” 2015 TO HONOR RUSS & JULIE PARIS (RUSS & JULIE’S HOUSE CONCERTS)
This Saturday night, a sold-out house concert (there is a waiting list), will host Grammy-winning guitarist LAURENCE JUBER. Of course, it’s the latest in a long series of splendid offerings in the “Russ and Julie’s House Concerts” series in Oak Park, in the hard-to-define Agoura Hills / Westlake Village area.

Moreover, they have taught a great many others how to produce and host a house concert, and they’ve taught artists how to approach fans and what to do to educate them and make it work.
For those things and more, Russ & Julie will be honored with the 2015 "Best of the West" Ambassador award by Folk Alliance Region West (FAR-West). The award will be presented at the annual FAR-West Music Conference this coming October in Oakland, CA. GIANT 6 TON POTATO & 18-FOOT-HIGH FORK: SPUDS & TABLE UTENSILS MEET AGAIN SATURDAY
What artsy-fartsy type can resist this?
This Saturday morning, July 11, the Idaho Potato Council returns to Pasadena with their 18-wheeler Potato Mobile to sidle-up to the 18- foot high "Fork In the Road." It happens at the home of the fork, at the intersection of St. Johns Place and Pasadena Ave. – a “fork-in-the-road,” of course.
The fork is always there, and worth a trip on its own. It frequently attracts global visitors for selfie photo shoots. But this is sumpin’ ya don’t see everyday: a 6-ton potato, served-up for the brobdignagian fork. Oh sure, the Coffee Gallery Backstage, which is actually up in Altadena, has put-on a show of huge potatoes and enormous table utensils for the enjoyment of crowds of people – and to be featured on the evening news – several times in the past few years. But the potato is a product of Idaho. (It had to be there or Maine, after all), and the spud lives in Idaho when it’s not roaming the nation for celebrity spud appearances. Which is most of the time. So catch it while you can.
The actual address for that navigating machine on which you are far too dependent, is “Fork Plaza,” 200 W. Bellefontaine, Pasadena, CA 91105.
The Idaho Potato Council trucks-in their 6-ton fiberglass potato and the action begins right around 10:30 am. There will be potato sack races, hot potato jugglers, singers doing potato and fork songs, and several other events, fork- and potato- oriented. Expect a charity to be there, benefiting their cause with a sign-up board for some future event that will likely happen at the fork. It’s been doing noble service for food bank food drives and other good causes since it first mysteriously appeared there as a guerrilla art installation.
Oh, and the truck hauling the potato comes with lots of visual toys and a colorful crew.

Juni Fisher is one of the most popular singing cowgirls on the Cowboy Poetry and Folk Festival circuits. She has won numerous awards from the Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists and has released seven CDs. In her spare time, she also loves to go fly fishing.

Juni Fisher is no stranger to Tehachapi. She has played three previous sold-out concerts at Fiddlers Crossing. Fisher is the real deal – a Western singer who actually IS a cowgirl. Many of her songs are about women rodeo riders of bygone days, and she can be funny and poignant at the same time. Fisher grew up horse crazy on a San Joaquin Valley citrus farm, achieving 4-H and FFA honors, listening to the music of Marty Robbins, Joan Baez and Burl Ives and learning Western songs from her father. While in elementary school, Fisher began singing in a trio with her two sisters. She started playing guitar at age seven and wrote her first song at age eight. After graduation from high school, Fisher rode her way through the Equine Science program at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, helping neighboring ranchers train horses and winning top honors at Intercollegiate and Quarter Horse shows. Singing big band standards with a dance orchestra was a way of earning entry money for horse shows. Meanwhile, she continued to write her own songs. She moved to Santa Ynez, CA, in 1984 to train cutting horses, and was soon asked to join a local band. It wasn’t long before she was singing in Los Angeles clubs with a popular country band, playing the Western and cowboy music she loved. In 1991, Fisher traded her quarter horses for hunters and jumpers when she accepted a one-year position with a Tennessee hunt club. Living near Nashville gave her the opportunity she needed to hone her songwriting skills. She and her husband, Rusty, still live in Tennessee with their horses.

ANDRÉ BRUNET was born in Lacolle, Quebec. In their teens, he and his brother Réjean, created the band Les Frères Brunet and went on to record several albums and perform at various concerts around the world. In 1997 he earned a coveted spot with La Bottine Souriante. At the Grand Masters Fiddling Competition in 2008 André took home top honours as "Grand Master of Canada”. It was the first time a Quebecer had won the prestigious award since the competition’s inception in 1990.

PIERRE-LUC DUPUIS was born in Louiseville, Quebec, took up the accordion at 18 and at 19, founded Les Langues Fourchures, with whom he recorded their first album in 2001. In 2003, he joined Andre in La Bottine Souriante, and wowed audiences from Dublin to Porto and Budapest to Melbourne with his musical talent, unique humour and warm-hearted charisma.

ÉRIC BEAUDRY was weaned on music in Saint-Côme, Quebec and began singing and playing guitar at the age of 10. In 1992, he founding the band La Galvaude, followed-up later by Ni Sarpe Ni Branche and Norouet. Éric’s singing voice has won him several awards including a 2002 Prix Mnémo. In 2003 he too joined La Bottine Souriante. Wherever he performs, His rich vocal range and unquestionable talent on stringed instruments—guitar, mandolin and bouzouki — guarantee a rousing performance for all.

ALBERT LEE grew up in London, and began making music at an early age. He left school at sixteen to turn pro, eventually replacing Jimmy Page in The Crusaders before joining Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds in 1964. His proficiency playing country licks on his Telecaster led to more and more session work and, finally, a move to Los Angeles in the '70s. A few years later, Albert was asked by Emmylou Harris to replace James Burton —one of his guitar heroes —who was leaving for Elvis Presley's band. He joined the Hot Band, and his incredible guitar work came to the fore on the Luxury Liner LP. His career took off from there, and now, four decades later, he's a multiple Grammy winner, and, according to Vince Gill, "One of the finest guitar players who ever walked this earth."
CINDY CASHDOLLAR, Dobro, steel guitar, and lap steel player, has experienced a career that has taken some surprising twists and turns. All that has led her to work with many leading artists in various genres, including Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Dave Alvin, Rod Stewart, Asleep At The Wheel, Leon Redbone, BeauSoleil, and Daniel Lanois. Cindy's unerring ability to perfectly complement a song, or step out with a tasteful, imaginative, and exciting solo — and to do it in so many musical genres — has made her one of the most in-demand musicians on the American roots music scene. Her debut CD, “Slide Show,” features guest artists comprising a Who's Who from the Americana music landscape. Our correspondent there, Brian, says, “I attended an early runthrough on Sunday and I was moved by the way this play explores the relationship between the title character and her father, who is a poet in India yearning for literary success in the United States. There are many complex layers to this play, including investigations of colonialism and the challenges of being an immigrant. It left me with a lot to think about on the drive home, and the show isn't even close to being "done." The runthrough I watched was in the rehearsal room, so there were no theatrical design elements. Despite that, I could see how this is truly a ‘Boston Court’ play; it is deeply rich in text, and will be highly theatrical in the presentation. I am looking forward to watching the production develop over the next few weeks.”

Based on the acclaimed memoir “One Train Later” by guitarist Andy Summers, “Can't Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police” follows Summers' journey from his early days in the psychedelic '60s music scene when he played with THE ANIMALS to chance encounters with drummer STEWART COPELAND and bassist STING, which led to the formation of the Grammy-winning trio THE POLICE.

During the band's rise and its dissolution at the height of their popularity in the mid-’80s, Summers captured history with his candid photographs. Using rare archival footage and insights from the guitarist's side of the stage, “Can't Stand Losing You” brings together past and almost-present as the band members reunite, two decades later, for a global reunion tour in 2007. Following the film screening, Summers will participate in a panel discussion, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation.

Avoid the crowds and parking hassles of other areas on the Westside. Courtyard opens at 4:30 pm. Careful with arriving early, because the free parking is free for two hours in designated parking structures in Culver City. Dozens of dining options are available within walking distance. You can even catch the new light rail to Culver City and a convenient Culver Bus to the concert, and not drive at all.

For his first recording for Sony Classical, “Appalachia Waltz,” GRAMMY-winning violinist MARK O'CONNOR collaborated with fellow GRAMMY winners YO-YO MA and EDGAR MEYER. The album gained O'Connor worldwide recognition as a leading proponent of a new American musical idiom.
+
His successful follow-up release, “Appalachian Journey,” received a GRAMMY for “Best Classical Crossover Album.” After an award-winning recording career in Nashville appearing on more than 500 albums, several of which are GRAMMY winners, including his own “New Nashville Cats,” O'Connor has immersed himself into perpetuating American classical music. His first full-length orchestral score, "Fiddle Concerto," has become the most-performed modern violin concerto composed in the last 50 years.

In 2009, he developed the “O'Connor Method” for violin and strings, which takes an American classical approach to modern violin playing, offering a technical foundation using a diverse range of traditional American string repertoire. The “O'Connor Method Camp” will be held for the first time in New York this August. O'Connor's "Americana Symphony," recorded by MARIN ALSOP AND THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY, had a successful multimedia performance earlier in June with the NATIONAL REPERTORY ORCHESTRA in Breckenridge, Colorado.

O'Connor's upcoming release, “Duo,” a collaboration with his wife, fiddler/violinist MAGGIE O'CONNOR, features American classics arranged for two violins. In the museum’s Clive Davis Theater, Mark O'Connor will engage in an intimate discussion surrounding his music career, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation. And yes, the discussion will be followed by a special performance with O'Connor and his wife.
