♪ ANNUAL “INTERNATIONAL POP OVERTHROW” IS NOW PLAYING ITS L.A. / OC DATES, THROUGH AUGUST 2

The “Overthrow” is an international tour which happens throughout the Los Angeles from July 24-August 2, at various venues throughout L.A. and OC.

International Pop Overthrow – or “IPO,” ot “the Overthrow,” as it has affectionately become known – is a series of dates that constitute a piecemeal music festival, featuring alt-pop, rock, some rootsy folk-rock, and probably some other niche-market bands, from around the world. The roving one-gig-at-a-time festival is centered annually in several U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, as well as dates in England and Canada.

This year’s tour began in San Diego back in February, then went to Phoenix in March, and leaped over to Chicago and Detroit in April. It was in Milwaukee to begin May, before spending the rest of that month in England, in Liverpool and London. June wisely provided a break for bands to play the festival circuit.

It’s doing its “Los Angeles” dates RIGHT NOW, in venues all over the L.A. area and OC.

IPO will spend the rest of August in San Francisco (Aug 17-20), Seattle (Aug 24-27), and get into September in Vancouver, B.C. (Aug 30-Sep 3). After a break, it picks-up in Austin (Sep 29-Oct 2), then goes to Dallas (Oct 6-9). Another break, and it hits New York City (Nov 1-6), crosses the border to Toronto (Nov 9-12), then gets to Boston before the snows (Nov 16-19). It’ll be in Denver in December, though dates have yet to be announced.

The Guide has listed some individual dates in daily editions, as they happened – most notably last weekend, when KAREN NASH and ANNY CELSI shared an IPO-night gig at Molly Malone’s. But each night involves a lengthy lineup, so seeing them all in one place will help you plan and get you involved.

♪ WYE OAK, AN EXCITING DUO IN TOWN FOR TWO SHOWS, JULY 29 & 30...

Let’s get right to it. For some of our readers, this is one of those “And now for something completely different” moments. But this outfit warrants a Guide feature story. WYE OAK plays two Southern Cal dates:

Wye Oak is touring their latest album, "Shriek." The duo shares their July 29 date with the band LAKE.

FOLKIES? Of a sort. Wye Oak has brought some unusual influences to their style of folk music, including indie, dream pop, and shoegaze. They are a band of two, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack. Their stage setup on tour dates is notably unusual, with lead vocalist Jenn Wasner thrashing away on her guitar and drummer / keyboardist Andy Stack playing the drums with his right hand, striking the bass pedal with his foot, and creating basslines on the keyboard with his left hand.

Wye Oak has become well known, not only for the duo's vocal harmonizing, but for catching audiences off guard with distortion or sudden changes in volume. Audiences began attempting to define Wye Oak's style on their many tour dates in 2011 when they opened for some of the biggest names in music.

Wasner and Stack spent most of their lives in Baltimore, Maryland. But after two years of constantly touring "Civilian," their highly lauded 2011 album, they landed on opposite sides of the country with an unforeseeable future ahead. Despite this newfound uncertainty, the two bandmates embraced their physical distance, passing ideas back and forth, allowing new work to evolve in their respective solitudes.

"Shriek" is their fourth full-length cd and the culmination of their intent "to express the emotional and intuitive self by acting out animalistic exclamations through cathartic release." They will tell you it's their most personal and confident declaration yet.

Newly inspired by playing bass, Jenn took up songwriting in a setting where the guitar did not dictate harmonic boundaries or require a call-and-response relationship with her voice, a hallmark of previous Wye Oak records. With her phrasing freed, now it is often Andy who interacts with Jenn's vocals, playing syncopated and meditative keyboard parts, and the duo's collaborative arrangements provide a backdrop in which both the arcs of melodies and the new rhythmic elements flourish.

To engineer, mix, and co-produce, they brought in Nicolas Vernhes of the Rare Book Room in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, whose inventive approaches to production fit their new direction. The result, "Shriek," is a record that's been described as "a narrative of disorientation, loss, renewal, and empowerment."

Both Wasner and Stack had played in numerous local bands around Baltimore since high school, forming their duo in 2006. The two initially searched for more members before settling in as a musical twosome and playing numerous local tour dates.

Their debut album, "If Children," was released independently in 2007, but gained such local and underground popularity (especially among bloggers) that it led to a record deal and a re-release of the record. Wye Oak continued to craft their sound on "The Knot" in 2009, and their endlessly toured "Civilian" from its release in 2011. And now, some changes with their 2015 release, "Shriek."

"Civilian" was acclaimed as a "winning evolution" of Wye Oak's style, allowing the duo to crash noisily into mainstream popularity. It's also allowed Wasner and Stack to spread their new sound as openers for some heavy hitters' tour dates in 2011. Some of those bands include Portugal. The Man, The Decemberists, Okkervil River, and their stylistic counterparts, Yo La Tengo. Wye Oak is also performing at some of the summer's biggest music festivals.

SHANNA O'BRIEN is a powerful performing songwriter and singer who brings folk and the blues to a high level. In the ’80s she played with some of rock's best in the Bay area. While she has a notable history, critics say the most significant thing in her music is that it comes from the heart. Her songs are powerful, moving, and inspirational because she, herself, is. One of the original heartland rockers, John Mellencamp has perfected his folk-rock singer-songwriter craft and persona. He recently released his 21st studio album, "No Better Than This," and is, of course, touring it through 2015.

After several years of bouncing around Indiana and New York City performing and recording music, Mellencamp finally hit mainstream radio in 1980 with the single "I Need a Lover". It was 1982's album, American Fool, featuring "Hurts So good" and "Jack & Diane", that catapulted Mellencamp to multi-Platinum success. The single "Hurts so Good", earned Mellencamp his first, and to-date only, Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal performance. The success continued throughout the '80s and '90s for Mellencamp. John Mellencamp tour dates were scheduled on sell-out stadium tours and he shared the stage with other iconic performers such as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

The unique venue where Summergrass happens harks back to the 19th and early 20th century farm days, and it’s brimming with rural farm nostalgia from that era. There are steam and gas engines chugging away, powering historic tractors and farm equipment along other relics, in the Weaver's Barn, the Farmhouse, the Schoolhouse, the 1930s gas station replica (posted price "32 cents a gallon"),and there’s a model railroad, a Blacksmith shop, and plenty to delight young and old. In the past, many of the Summergrass headline performers have either won or have been nominated for International Bluegrass Music Association awards. The combination of national and regional bands on the turn-of-the-19th / 20th century stage built by the museum folks just for the festival. It's constructed without nails, using just dowels and pins to hold it together.

In all, it’s three days of great live music from twelve national and local bands, and wonderful activities, such as Kids Camp, Meet the Bands, other music workshops and family-friendly things to do, spontaneous jam sessions, and the ever-popular instrument raffles, tasty food, and a variety of vendors. Wye Oak is touring their latest album, "Shriek." The duo shares their July 29 date with the band LAKE.

FOLKIES? Of a sort. Wye Oak has brought some unusual influences to their style of folk music, including indie, dream pop, and shoegaze. They are a band of two, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack. Their stage setup on tour dates is notably unusual, with lead vocalist Jenn Wasner thrashing away on her guitar and drummer / keyboardist Andy Stack playing the drums with his right hand, striking the bass pedal with his foot, and creating basslines on the keyboard with his left hand.

Wye Oak has become well known, not only for the duo's vocal harmonizing, but for catching audiences off guard with distortion or sudden changes in volume. Audiences began attempting to define Wye Oak's style on their many tour dates in 2011 when they opened for some of the biggest names in music.
+
Wasner and Stack spent most of their lives in Baltimore, Maryland. But after two years of constantly touring "Civilian," their highly lauded 2011 album, they landed on opposite sides of the country with an unforeseeable future ahead. Despite this newfound uncertainty, the two bandmates embraced their physical distance, passing ideas back and forth, allowing new work to evolve in their respective solitudes.
+
"Shriek" is their fourth full-length cd and the culmination of their intent "to express the emotional and intuitive self by acting out animalistic exclamations through cathartic release." They will tell you it's their most personal and confident declaration yet.
+
Newly inspired by playing bass, Jenn took up songwriting in a setting where the guitar did not dictate harmonic boundaries or require a call-and-response relationship with her voice, a hallmark of previous Wye Oak records. With her phrasing freed, now it is often Andy who interacts with Jenn's vocals, playing syncopated and meditative keyboard parts, and the duo's collaborative arrangements provide a backdrop in which both the arcs of melodies and the new rhythmic elements flourish.
+
To engineer, mix, and co-produce, they brought in Nicolas Vernhes of the Rare Book Room in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, whose inventive approaches to production fit their new direction. The result, "Shriek," is a record that's been described as "a narrative of disorientation, loss, renewal, and empowerment."
+
Both Wasner and Stack had played in numerous local bands around Baltimore since high school, forming their duo in 2006. The two initially searched for more members before settling in as a musical twosome and playing numerous local tour dates.
+
Their debut album, "If Children," was released independently in 2007, but gained such local and underground popularity (especially among bloggers) that it led to a record deal and a re-release of the record. Wye Oak continued to craft their sound on "The Knot" in 2009, and their endlessly toured "Civilian" from its release in 2011. And now, some changes with their 2015 release, "Shriek."

"Civilian" was acclaimed as a "winning evolution" of Wye Oak's style, allowing the duo to crash noisily into mainstream popularity. It's also allowed Wasner and Stack to spread their new sound as openers for some heavy hitters' tour dates in 2011. Some of those bands include Portugal. The Man, The Decemberists, Okkervil River, and their stylistic counterparts, Yo La Tengo. Wye Oak is also performing at some of the summer's biggest music festivals.

Kelly released her debut digital EP, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly, in 2012 and it cracked the Top 10 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Long is best known for his powerfully evocative lyrics set to haunting melodies. Since relocating to New York in 2009, he has cultivated a large, dedicated fan base, one that allowed him to successfully implement a PledgeMusic campaign to fund the new album. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas with producer Mark Hallman at his Congress House Studios.

They're playing Serbia in September. That should give you the idea they're a big local deal. Indeed, Phat Cat Swinger has toured the country and performed shows with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Royal Crown Revue, and played alongside The Coasters.

One of the best bands to dance to in the surrounding Los Angeles areas, Phat Cat Swinger was influenced by the classic sounds of Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, and Frank Sinatra and mixed with the new swingin’ sounds of such bands as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, and Brian Setzer. Phat Cat Swinger is a band filled with booming toms, walking bass lines, jumpin’ guitar rhythms, roaring horn lines and smooth vocals.

Born of the idea to combine fun, laughter and great music to entertain audiences with a collective showmanship, the nine band members of Phat Cat Swinger have grown to be one of the hottest live swing bands to hit Southern California’s underground scene.

A big break for the band came when they made an appearance in Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman” music video, where they performed in the beginning scene of the song dressed up to the nines in white suits; they have also appeared as band members for the Jonas Brothers in their music video "Love Bug" and more recently played for the Stars And Stripes Benefit at the venue of every man’s dream, the Playboy Mansion.

Phat Cat Swinger's first album (self titled) was released in July 2005 and held such fanatical songs such as “Hep Cats,” “Money Tree,” and the crowd’s favorite sing-along song, “Smolie Olie Olie.” Most of the band's original songs were composed by Marco Palos with the rest of the band pitching-in until they reached melodies that take you from toe-tapping jazz to smooth, sultry tango.

Together with original songs they perform nostalgic cover songs that take you back (even if you weren't there), including “Run Around Sue,” “Sing Sing Sing”, “The Way You Look Tonight,” “In The Mood,” and “Jump Jive And Wail.”

In May 2009, the band released another disc, this one a three song EP with their original, “Won’t You Tell Me?” and “Ain’t Got No Home” (which is amazing to see live, where Phil hits those high notes and Marco, with his sultry deep baritone voice, adds wonders to this song), plus their new song, “Dance Dance Dance,” with lyrics written by lead vocalist Tim Porter. This band lets listeners know there is no right or wrong way to dance.
