REGISTRATION (ONLINE) CLOSES TODAY

“Summergrass 2015,” happening August 14-15-16, is less than a month away. It’s always to go down to “The Farm," step back in time, relax, and enjoy this great festival. Summergrass San Diego happens at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum. It’s a unique venue that harks back to the 19th and 20th century farm days, and it’s brimming with rural farm nostalgia from that era. There are steam and gas engines chugging away on historic tractors and farm equipment along other relics, in the Weaver's Barn, the Farmhouse, the Schoolhouse, the 1930s gas station replica (posted price "32 cents a gallon"),and there’s a model railroad, a Blacksmith shop, and plenty to delight young and old.

And now’s the time to register your young ‘un for Kids Camp. Along with looking at your own tickets, the lineup and schedule, camping arrangements, and everything else. This year Summergrass has a fine lineup, with:

THE BOXCARS
BECKY BULLER
SIDELINE
BLUEGRASS ETC.
THE BROMBIES
ROCKY NECK BLUEGRASS
LONESOME OTIS
NEXT GENERATION
BOX CANYON
FRONT PORCH MUSIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY
BLUEGRASS BRETHREN
HIGH MOUNTAIN ROAD

In the past, many of the Summergrass headline performers have either won or have been nominated for International Bluegrass Music Association awards. The combination of national and regional bands on the turn-of-the-19th/ 20th century stage built by the museum folks just for the festival. It's constructed without nails, using just dowels and pins to hold it together.

In all, it’s three days of great live music from twelve national and local bands, and wonderful activities, such as Kids Camp, Meet the Bands, other music workshops and family-friendly things to do, spontaneous jam sessions, and the ever-popular instrument raffles, tasty food, and a variety of vendors. Summergrass is enjoyable for the whole family, a great, affordable family event, and not too far to drive.

But you must act TODAY for the 13th Anniversary Kids Camp.

After 12 years of an outstanding activity, they are of course offering it again. Summergrass Kids Camp will be presented with the help and teaching experience of ROCKY NECK BLUEGRASS BAND. Rocky Neck is an energetic band from the Orange County Area who have performed at many festivals and camps. They will also perform on stage all three days, so they’ll be very busy pickers ‘n grinners.

All kids ages 6-16 are welcome at Kid's Camp. The instruments to be taught are banjo, guitar, bass, fiddle, mandolin, dobro and singing.

Registration is required and closes TODAY, July 26, 2015. Registration is $60.

Details and the registration form are online at:
www.summergrass.net.

Summergrass Kids Camp also accepts donations to help defray the costs of teachers and scholarships for camp participants.

On the deck of “Star of India,” the world's oldest active sailing ship, the festival celebrates the rich history at the intersection of sea and song. Sponsors say, “We always have a great time at the festival, so we hope you'll join us for another chance to learn about this fascinating and important part of our history.”

Noon-2 pm MURPHY'S FLAW plays the “BLUEGRASS BRUNCH” at Cody’s Viva Cantina, 900 Riverside Dr, Burbank 91506.
+
This outfit always has a story. This time? As Jimmy Durante used to say, "Evv-ree-body wants ta get inta th' act!" Seems that MURPHY'S FLAW, a long-running Southern California-based bluegrass band, sent a message and photo to their list and the media, to announce their change-of-name (though not really) to TRUMP'S FLAW.
+
John Bryant, the band's banjo playing leader (that's a non sequitur), says, "Donald Trump Bought the Flaw. He walked up and said, 'I own you.' We said, 'okay.' We were talking about what an honor it is to be part of the Trump Empire, but he'd already gotten back into the limo and left.
+
John says, "Check out our first bluegrass brunch as a wholly-owned subsidiary:
+
"The tip jar will still be out because we haven't received our stock options yet.
+
"p.s.: If you'd like to help write our performance reviews, consult the "Donald Trump Insult Generator,"
+
(at http://time.com/3966291/donald-trump-insult-generator/ ) “print them out and bring them to read aloud at the show.”
+
"pps: The insults are from The Donald's actual tweets. The hair in the picture is also The Donald's, from several different windy days."

+
Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes
+
ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION...
The 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, France heralded in the design aesthetic that the world now knows as "Art Deco." This illustrated presentation celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Paris exhibition of 1925, which was a six month (April - October) display of modern decorative arts from all over Europe. Rory Cunningham, past president of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, will speak about the pavilions, the boutiques and luxury goods displayed in the Expo, how the style spread throughout the world, and how it continues to evolve.
+
Followed by the SCREENING...
The 1930 French silent film, “AU BONHEUR DES DAMES,” 89 min, directed by Julien Duvivier, is a tale of corporate greed crushing the competition and squeezing-out the little guy. Though the story sounds like it was torn from today's headlines, the film is a fascinating classic from the silent era. The legendary German actress and fashion icon Dita Parlo (“GRAND ILLUSION”), whose exotic look and glamorous mystique inspired Madonna, stars as Denise, an orphan girl who comes to Paris to work in her uncle's small shop. Instead, she takes a job as a model in the big department store across the street, which is trying to run her uncle out of business. Portions of the film were actually shot at the Parisian grand magasin “Gallerie Lafayette.” And yes, an abundance of Deco era dresses, hats, gloves and more are on display in the department store scenes. Perhaps the last great silent production to come out of France, this melodrama is based on a novel by Emile Zola and directed by Julien Duvivier.

Plus, newsreel footage from the actual 1925 Expo.

Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles.

+
BURNING HEART BLUEGRASS BAND brings a dynamic combination of instruments, vocals and tradition. They played to a sell-out crowd here in May. Bob Stane says, “There is nothing like the sound of guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and doghouse bass when they get into that special bluegrass groove. Add to that high-powered vocals and soaring harmonies and you have Burning Heart Bluegrass.”
+
With nearly 100 years of musical experience between them, the members of Burning Heart Bluegrass provide these essentials with all the energy, drive, passion, and precision that prompted Ralph Rinzler to call Bluegrass music "folk music on overdrive." Drawing it's repertoire from old and new Bluegrass classics, BHB provides a genuine Bluegrass experience.
+
Let’s talk about the members of Burning Heart Bluegrass...
+
Jeff Fleck was originally drawn to Bluegrass because it reminded him of the folk music he used to play way back when; he stuck with it because he loves the energy and precision that Bill Monroe brought to the traditional forms of mountain music. Dan Sankey is an accomplished banjo, mandolin, fiddle and guitar player and has performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Born in Louisiana, Keith Chagnon By the time he was In his teens he was entering and winning banjo contests. Keith has played in numerous Bluegrass bands in Ohio and Kentucky, and, since the mid 80s,in California. Steve Rosenstein entered the music scene when he joined Sweet Smoke, the psychedelic jazz-rock band based in Germany on the Dutch border. Returning to the USA, he performed Irish music in Boston, and, after a move to California, in Santa Cruz. Since moving to Los Angeles in Steve has performed with many musicians in the country/Bluegrass scene, including Richard Greene, Nicky Hopkins, Pete Anderson, and Herb Pederson. Born and raised in rural Oregon along the Columbia River, Ron Vance didn't discover Bluegrass until he settled in Santa Monica. Innumerable festivals, fiddle contests, jams and bands later, Ron finds himself in Burning Heart Bluegrass, still enjoying the ride.

7 pm FRED SOKOLOW & HEIDI SWEDBERG play a ukulele elite and very comedic musical show at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675. Reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane gets the idea across: “UKULELE FANS ARISE! DO NOT CAUGHT ASLEEP ON YOUR 4 STRINGS.”
+
He adds, “Comedy folks will love HEIDI SWEDBERG who was featured many times on ‘Seinfeld.’”
+
Bob Stane claims to have been “arrested several times for nagging Heidi by email,” saying, “This is the first time in the history of the Internet that an actual arrest has happened. Well, maybe not ‘arrested,’ which is such an ugly world. Let us just say that HEIDI SWEDBERG has a low tolerance for electronic pain and she caved-in. Later this Summer, she promised to appear with her group THE SMOKING JACKETS if I would make the torture stop. I am not an unreasonable man. They will appear. For now you get to see her and Fred together. The Fun Couple.”
+
On a roll, Bob adds, “We always appreciate the skill of FRED SOKOLOW who has played our stage many times before. Now we get to experience Heidi Swedberg for the second time as a single. She brings her comedy acting skills into her now ‘main life’ of music. I have been trying to get her back to The Coffee Gallery Backstage for a year. Get her before she escapes again.”
+
FRED SOKOLOW is best known as the author of 150 instructional books and DVDs for guitar, uke, banjo, Dobro, mandolin and lap steel. He's a multi-string performer and recording artist, and whether he's playing Delta bottleneck blues, bluegrass or old-time banjo, 30s swing uke or screaming rock guitar solos, he does it with authenticity and passion.
+
Fred brings this diversity to his ukulele performances, interspersing 20s and 30s Tin Pan Alley tunes with bluegrass banjo-style picking, blues and slide, beautiful chord melody versions of pop tunes and jazz standards, and original tunes –all on his tenor Kamaka uke. He'll throw in a Mexican tune, a ragtime piece or a 50's oldie for variety. He'll be sure to play samples from his recently released uke DVDs which cover Hawaiian tunes, blues and songs of the ukulele legends, or from his recently released book of instrumental versions of Beatles tunes. He's often accompanied by his wife Lynn on string bass, and their "Dueling Banjos" with uke and double-bass is a unique experience.
+
HEIDI SWEDBERG has gone from fabled ‘Seinfeld’ cast member to one of the country’s top ukulele clinicians. Swedberg is perhaps better known as an actress (Hot Shots; Galaxy Quest) than a musician. Of all her roles, her most recognizable is the character of Susan Ross, on the television show Seinfeld. Yes, she played George Costanza’s doomed fiancé, who, in one of the series’ most outrageous and notorious episodes, died of toxic poisoning after licking hundreds of wedding invitation envelopes. Nowadays, Swedberg plays the ukulele more often than she plays characters on screen. Her family-friendly, uke-driven party band with the patently upbeat name released its first album, Play!, in 2009 and has just produced an effervescent follow-up, My Cup of Tea. As a teacher focuses on beginning and intermediate ukulele students. As a musician she concentrates on being a great stage performer.

Note, “the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more.”
+
In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

+
For his first recording for Sony Classical, “Appalachia Waltz, ” GRAMMY-winning violinist MARK O'CONNOR collaborated with fellow GRAMMY winners YO-YO MA and EDGAR MEYER. The album gained O'Connor worldwide recognition as a leading proponent of a new American musical idiom.
+
His successful follow-up release, “Appalachian Journey, ” received a GRAMMY for “Best Classical Crossover Album.” After an award-winning recording career in Nashville appearing on more than 500 albums, several of which are GRAMMY winners, including his own “New Nashville Cats, ” O'Connor has immersed himself into perpetuating American classical music. His first full-length orchestral score, "Fiddle Concerto, " has become the most-performed modern violin concerto composed in the last 50 years.
+
In 2009, he developed the “O'Connor Method” for violin and strings, which takes an American classical approach to modern violin playing, offering a technical foundation using a diverse range of traditional American string repertoire. The “O'Connor Method Camp” will be held for the first time in New York this August. O'Connor's "Americana Symphony, " recorded by MARIN ALSOP AND THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY, had a successful multimedia performance earlier in June with the NATIONAL REPERTORY ORCHESTRA in Breckenridge, Colorado.
+
O'Connor's upcoming release, “Duo, ” a collaboration with his wife, fiddler/violinist MAGGIE O'CONNOR, features American classics arranged for two violins. In the museum’s Clive Davis Theater, Mark O'Connor will engage in an intimate discussion surrounding his music career, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation. And yes, the discussion will be followed by a special performance with O'Connor and his wife.
+
