ATARAXIA AND THE BLUE MOON

by Larry Wines

The theme here is a word. First, what it is, and should mean to us. Second, an example of how to reclaim and experience it. And the astute may note that another word — Tranquility — is the touchstone between the two parts.

The word? It's ataraxia. You've probably never heard of it.

We need ataraxia. It's not a prescription drug to cure something that you didn't know you had. It's actually something you wish you had. Ataraxia is a word lost to language. And it needs rediscovery. It was the ancient Greek term for the opposite of anxiety.

The word was used by Pyrrho and Epicurus to describe "a lucid state of robust tranquility, characterized by ongoing freedom from distress and worry." The obscure definition in the modern dictionaries — the ones that still carry it — call ataraxia "a state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety; tranquillity."

Too bad about our advanced American society —working our three part-time jobs; with no retirement or health care, no paid vacation like your father had; permanent hypochondria from nonstop bombardment with ads for unaffordable prescription drugs that cure toenail fungus but cause crotchrot; hundred-dollar luggage fees for seats with your knees in your armpits; record hot summers and record cold winters and resulting record high utility and food bills; and because it's too hot or cold to be outside, addiction to hundred-dollar-a-month cable bills for tv that used to be free with rabbit ears.

Too bad we don't know as much about relaxing as people knew 3,000 years ago. Or 40 years ago.

Now, how about a quick, short-attention-span compatible, and totally FREE opportunity to find a moment of ataraxia? Here comes that double meaning with tranquility.

Friday morning at 3:45 am (Pacific), we'll experience a second full moon in the same month. That's called "a blue moon," which doesn't make a bit of sense, since there's no assurance it'll appear blue. But it is rare, occasioning the phrase, "Once in a blue moon." In fact, it happens, on average, once every 2.7 years. But averages are tricky things. The last one was in 2012. But the next time won't be until 2018, when we'll get TWO in the same year.

So, is the Moon ever really blue? Yes, when atmospherics are right. Usually that requires a lot of particulates from a volcanic eruption. The world experienced truly blue moons after the massive explosion of Krakatoa, and again after Mt. St. Helens blew a cubic mile of itself into the stratosphere.

These days, you really don't want to see any "blue" blue moons. Or the Moon appearing blue any other time. Because the turbine engine blades of jet aircraft don't like the sharply abrasive particles from volcanoes.

Enjoy the blue moon Friday morning. Which probably won't look blue, but will be blue.

And if you're still waiting for the delivery of that touchstone of tranquility? It's on the Moon. Matter of fact, back before shortsighted austerity gutted America's space program, the first place humans ever set foot off the Earth was on the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon. Which despite being called a sea, wasn't blue, either. But it was tranquil. Downright ataraxic.

Thu, Jul 30, in Altadena:
8 pm SKIP SPIRIO's 10 PIECE JAZZ/BLUES PROJECT plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2019 N Lake Av, Altadena. You will, FOR SURE, need reservations to get in. Call 10 am-10 pm, 626-798-6236.
+
SKIP SPIRIO says, "For this particular show, I’ve added the amazing Dave Tull on drums and vocals. If you’re not familiar with Dave, he’s toured with Chuck Mangione, Maynard Ferguson, the Jack Sheldon Big Band, Cheryl Bentyne (of Manhattan Transfer) and many others."
+
Dave is an extraordinarily talented composer/arranger/vocalist in addition to being one of the most in demand first call studio drummers in town. Dave will be singing songs from his critically acclaimed CD “I Just Want to Get Paid” and will also be previewing new tunes to be included on his brand new CD to come out in a few months."
+
SKIP SPIRIO's 10 PIECE JAZZ/BLUES PROJECT features the original works of some ofthe most creative composer/arrangers on the scene today. The sound of the group is an eclectic mix of the traditional big band era of the 30s and 40s, the burnin' NY bebop scene of the 50s and 60s,the rock/funk/latin fusion scene that came to follow, and forms yet to be defined.
+
"The beauty of this 10 piece format", Spiro says, "is that we're big enough to produce a very full ensemble sound, yet small enough to shine the spotlight on each of the players. So the focus of the group is on new original material (along with re-worked standards and such) designed to feature each of these great ensemble players as soloists in their own right. In the traditional sense, there are no sidemen in this band, everyone is a featured soloist. This not only makes for a great musical experience, but a very happy band. And of course judging from responses we receive night after night, that enthusiasm translates right out there to the audience!”

Thu, Jul 30, in OC (Anaheim):
8 pm EASTON CORBIN with special guest HAYLEY ORRANTIA play the City National Grove of Anaheim, 2200 E Katella Av, Anaheim 92806; 714-712-2700.
+
With two No. 1 singles, multiple awards and nominations, plus performances on some of the biggest stages in the world, Easton Corbin makes his debut at City National Grove of Anaheim in support of his current top 10 and rising single, “Baby Be My Love Song,” from his upcoming release “About to Get Real.”
+
When Easton broke on the scene in 2009 with not one, but two, No. 1 singles, “A Little More Country than That” and “Roll With It,” and a Top 15 hit, “I Can’t Love You Back,” the country music world was put on notice. He became the first country male artist in 17 years to have his first two consecutive singles reach No. 1. Billboard named Easton the Top New Country Artist of 2010 and named "Roll With It" the No. 6 Hot Country Song of the Year. He was ranked No. 9 on Billboard’s list of Top Country Artists-Male, listed between Blake Shelton and Tim McGraw.
+
Easton’s third studio album, “About to Get Real,” was released June 30. Corbin teamed up with the same producer from his first two successful albums, Carson Chamberlain, for “About to Get Real,” which includes 11 tracks. “When deciding on an album title, ‘About to Get Real’ just says it all for me,” shares Corbin. “When country fans listen to this album, I want them to take away that even though the music mixes the modern with the classic, it’s entirely real. Like the music of my heroes, it’s the real deal.”
+
Corbin collaborated with director Shaun Silva for his Top 15 and climbing “Baby Be My Love Song” music video which was shot at Pinewood Social, a hip social club near downtown Nashville. Featuring Easton as the narrator, viewers witness a bartender strike up a romance with a young woman after-hours. The trendy lounge’s industrial-chic space, which includes a bowling alley, hot tub and Airstream, lends itself to the couple’s night of fun.
+
While Easton has plenty of long-term goals, the most important ones are simple. “I want to get my music to as many people as possible,” he says with a determined smile. “You’ve got to be good to your fans, and you’ve got to make music that’s true to you.

Thu, Jul 30, in Hollywood:
9 pm WYE OAK plays the second of two Southern Cal dates in different venues, tonight at Club Bahia, 1130 W Sunset Bl, L.A. 90012..
+
Wye Oak is touring their latest album, "Shriek." The duo shares their July 29 date with the band LAKE.
+
FOLKIES? Of a sort. Wye Oak has brought some unusual influences to their style of folk music, including indie, dream pop, and shoegaze. They are a band of two, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack. Their stage setup on tour dates is notably unusual, with lead vocalist Jenn Wasner thrashing away on her guitar and drummer / keyboardist Andy Stack playing the drums with his right hand, striking the bass pedal with his foot, and creating basslines on the keyboard with his left hand.
+
Wye Oak has become well known, not only for the duo's vocal harmonizing, but for catching audiences off guard with distortion or sudden changes in volume. Audiences began attempting to define Wye Oak's style on their many tour dates in 2011 when they opened for some of the biggest names in music.
+
Wasner and Stack spent most of their lives in Baltimore, Maryland. But after two years of constantly touring "Civilian," their highly lauded 2011 album, they landed on opposite sides of the country with an unforeseeable future ahead. Despite this newfound uncertainty, the two bandmates embraced their physical distance, passing ideas back and forth, allowing new work to evolve in their respective solitudes.
+
"Shriek" is their fourth full-length cd and the culmination of their intent "to express the emotional and intuitive self by acting out animalistic exclamations through cathartic release." They will tell you it's their most personal and confident declaration yet.
+
Newly inspired by playing bass, Jenn took up songwriting in a setting where the guitar did not dictate harmonic boundaries or require a call-and-response relationship with her voice, a hallmark of previous Wye Oak records. With her phrasing freed, now it is often Andy who interacts with Jenn's vocals, playing syncopated and meditative keyboard parts, and the duo's collaborative arrangements provide a backdrop in which both the arcs of melodies and the new rhythmic elements flourish.
+
To engineer, mix, and co-produce, they brought in Nicolas Vernhes of the Rare Book Room in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, whose inventive approaches to production fit their new direction. The result, "Shriek," is a record that's been described as "a narrative of disorientation, loss, renewal, and empowerment."
+
Both Wasner and Stack had played in numerous local bands around Baltimore since high school, forming their duo in 2006. The two initially searched for more members before settling in as a musical twosome and playing numerous local tour dates.
+
Their debut album, "If Children," was released independently in 2007, but gained such local and underground popularity (especially among bloggers) that it led to a record deal and a re-release of the record. Wye Oak continued to craft their sound on "The Knot" in 2009, and their endlessly toured "Civilian" from its release in 2011. And now, some changes with their 2015 release, "Shriek."
+
"Civilian" was acclaimed as a "winning evolution" of Wye Oak's style, allowing the duo to crash noisily into mainstream popularity. It's also allowed Wasner and Stack to spread their new sound as openers for some heavy hitters' tour dates in 2011. Some of those bands include Portugal. The Man, The Decemberists, Okkervil River, and their stylistic counterparts, Yo La Tengo. Wye Oak is also performing at some of the summer's biggest music festivals.

In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

There are steam and gas engines chugging away, powering historic tractors and farm equipment along other relics, in the Weaver's Barn, the Farmhouse, the Schoolhouse, the 1930s gas station replica (posted price "32 cents a gallon"),and there’s a model railroad, a Blacksmith shop, and plenty to delight young and old. Don’t delay getting your tickets and camping arrangements. Things do fill-up.

In the past, many of the Summergrass headline performers have either won or have been nominated for International Bluegrass Music Association awards. The combination of national and regional bands on the turn-of-the-19th / 20th century stage built by the museum folks just for the festival. It's constructed without nails, using just dowels and pins to hold it together.
+
In all, it’s three days of great live music from twelve national and local bands, and wonderful activities, such as Kids Camp, Meet the Bands, other music workshops and family-friendly things to do, spontaneous jam sessions, and the ever-popular instrument raffles, tasty food, and a variety of vendors. Summergrass is enjoyable for the whole family, a great, affordable family event, and not too far to drive.

Sat, Aug 1, in Pasadena:
8 pm PHAT CAT SWINGER plays a really big shew, sponsored by the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association at Grace Hall, 73 N Hill Av, Pasadena 91116.
+
All ages event. Ticket info below.
+
They're playing Serbia in September. That should give you the idea they're a big local deal. Indeed, Phat Cat Swinger has toured the country and performed shows with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Royal Crown Revue, and played alongside The Coasters.
+
One of the best bands to dance to in the surrounding Los Angeles areas, Phat Cat Swinger was influenced by the classic sounds of Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, and Frank Sinatra and mixed with the new swingin’ sounds of such bands as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, and Brian Setzer. Phat Cat Swinger is a band filled with booming toms, walking bass lines, jumpin’ guitar rhythms, roaring horn lines and smooth vocals.
+
Born of the idea to combine fun, laughter and great music to entertain audiences with a collective showmanship, the nine band members of Phat Cat Swinger have grown to be one of the hottest live swing bands to hit Southern California’s underground scene.
+
A big break for the band came when they made an appearance in Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman” music video, where they performed in the beginning scene of the song dressed up to the nines in white suits; they have also appeared as band members for the Jonas Brothers in their music video "Love Bug" and more recently played for the Stars And Stripes Benefit at the venue of every man’s dream, the Playboy Mansion.
+
Phat Cat Swinger's first album (self titled) was released in July 2005 and held such fanatical songs such as “Hep Cats,” “Money Tree,” and the crowd’s favorite sing-along song, “Smolie Olie Olie.” Most of the band's original songs were composed by Marco Palos with the rest of the band pitching-in until they reached melodies that take you from toe-tapping jazz to smooth, sultry tango.
+
Together with original songs they perform nostalgic cover songs that take you back (even if you weren't there), including “Run Around Sue,” “Sing Sing Sing”, “The Way You Look Tonight,” “In The Mood,” and “Jump Jive And Wail.”
+
In May 2009, the band released another disc, this one a three song EP with their original, “Won’t You Tell Me?” and “Ain’t Got No Home” (which is amazing to see live, where Phil hits those high notes and Marco, with his sultry deep baritone voice, adds wonders to this song), plus their new song, “Dance Dance Dance,” with lyrics written by lead vocalist Tim Porter. This band lets listeners know there is no right or wrong way to dance.
