David Griffiths, Brewer / Partner in Ladyface Ale Companie in Agoura, asked us to help hire you to perform at his new venue. Dave says, “I am Brewery / Restaurant owner in Agoura Hills and love Folk / Americana music. We have very casual music on Monday nights as well as more involved music on Friday / Saturday nights, plus Sunday afternoon on our beautiful patio. I am interested in having some of the artists in the Guide come play at our venue. If you can help in anyway get these musicians in touch with Ladyface that would be great. We are trying to spread the word of traditional music through our neighborhood, and I have been receiving the Guide for quite some time. (The Topanga Banjo Fiddle contest is my favorite event of the year.) We of course would pay the musicians.”

♪ 3) MORE AND MORE HERE IN L.A. …
2012 is the year the BATTLESHIP IOWA, the SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOUR, and now, THE STANLEY CUP make their homes in Los Angeles.
+
Before the USS IOWA arrived at her new display dock on Saturday, throngs of watchers on shore and in the parading flotilla had been treated to live music from many waterfront pubs.
+
As the 887-foot-long graceful grey vessel finally neared her moorings hours late at Berth 87, IOWA’s new home, the SAN PEDRO HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND continued to play appropriate WWII-era Big Band Swing music and some classic Souza. The kids had been standing in one place for hours in their band uniforms, maintaining their poise and musicianship under a slow-roasting sun. (Bravo to ’em!)
+
At last, as the water narrowed between dock and ship, the band broke into “Anchors Aweigh.” Aboard the IOWA, banks of sound system speakers replied with RANDY NEWMAN’s anthem. “I LOVE L.A.”
+
It was a sublime, only-in-Southern-California moment – one that would have been perfect if the two performances hadn’t trampled all over each other. Or maybe that’s appropriate, given the cacophonous background noise the IOWA will face as her operators, the Pacific Battleship Center, struggle for their rightful share of media attention in the overhyped L.A. market.
+
Beginning July 7, Iowa will be open to visitors as “the most interactive and educational” floating museum of its kind. We’ll keep you posted if that includes music performance opportunities. Already, to welcome her, San Pedro plans a street fair celebration with live music the evening of July 6. Meantime, there’s plenty of info at www.pacificbattleship.com.

♪ 7) AN IMPORTANT ANNIVERSARY, WITH A WARNING FOR OUR TIME…
Forty years ago this Sunday, on June 17, 1972, a security guard in the parking garage of the Watergate Hotel / Office complex in Washington, D.C., noticed that duct tape had been applied to the lock mechanism of a door to prevent it from locking shut. That quickly led to responding police officers discovering a break-in at the offices of the Democratic National Committee, where burglars were caught in the act. Those burglars possessed funds traceable to CREEP – the Committee to Re-Elect the President – the campaign arm of incumbent President Richard Nixon.
+
Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, and members of Walter Cronkite’s CBS News team, separately began to look into things that were not adding-up. Lots of shoe-leather reporting (of a kind that is all but gone today), aided by Woodward’s highly-placed secret source, “Deep Throat,” would reveal a web of lies and cover-up efforts. (The identity of Deep Throat was the longest-kept secret in Washington, until W. Mark Felt, the enigmatic former number-two man at the FBI, revealed himself as the key informant shortly before he died.
+
By 1974, a series of investigations would lead to televised hearings by the Senate Select Committee on Watergate (impossible as it seems today, that was an era when Congress actually did something). But the hearings came after Nixon had been reelected in a landslide in November of 1972. As facts were revealed, there was clear, overwhelming evidence of criminal activity by Nixon and top officials of his administration. A pattern was revealed of disregard for the law, by the very man who had been elected as the “law and order” candidate. Public opinion turned on Nixon, and people began wearing his campaign buttons, “Nixon’s the One,” as expressions of derision.
+
Far from being “a third-rate burglary,” as some who curiously want to minimize it would have us believe today, Watergate was the tip of the iceberg in a vast series of activities aimed at eliminating critics and opposition, and ultimately, circumventing the American electoral process.
+
Richard Nixon became the only President ever to resign the office, on the eve of an impeachment trial that would have found him guilty. (The votes to convict him in the House of Representatives were known, countable, and a foregone conclusion, on both sides of the aisle.)
+
For a time, the legacy of Watergate was a series of laws and regulatory agencies aimed at Fair Political Practices and public disclosure of the sources and amounts of money in politics.
+
All that was lost in 2010, with the Supreme Court’s decision in the ironically named “Citizens United” case, when money was equated as Free Speech and unlimited amounts of corporate dollars suddenly became legal, to secretly buy politicians, elections, office seekers and holders, and legislation. We are now in a world of Super-PACS, and spending on the 2012 election is expected to top three billion dollars – orders of magnitude more than anything ever before. Do such obscene amounts of money make another Watergate likely? Will it again involve law-breaking, or this time, just unethical behavior enabled by corrupting megabucks? America is still a work in progress. What do you think?
+
On Friday, June 15, at 7 pm, “THE KOCH BROTHERS EXPOSED,” explores some of these themes. It’s a free screening in the “CONSCIENTIOUS PROJECTOR” series of documentary films, this one at the Armory Center for the Arts (965 N Fair Oaks Av, Pasadena 91103; www.armoryarts.org; 626-792-5101). Post-film discussion will be led by ED BACON, Rector of Pasadena’s All Saints Church. The Koch Brothers have more money than Midas, and they are using large amounts of it, often in unseen ways, to buy specific outcomes from legislatures, often in an effort to influence and permanently change political, social, and foreign policy in America. Sat, Jun 16, FESTIVAL,
in Pasadena,
the free “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” festival pick:
11 am-11 pm annual “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA,” the local expression of the global “FETE DE LA MUSIQUE” from France, has stages galore, all free, and the acts to catch are THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL, JESSICA FICHOT, MOJACAR FLAMENCO, GERARDO MORALES FLAMENCO, SOKO, Y LA BAMBA, HONEYHONEY, LA SANTA CECILIA, GUSTAVO GALINDO, CORREATOWN, and there are many, many more to explore, at various locations in Old Town Pasadena.
+
Musically and geographically, this thing is all over the map. You’ll find some folk-Americana performances, some acoustic renaissance music, and you can suddenly wander into a thudding, over-amplified performance space with god-only-knows-what, blasting from an arena package of speakers.
+
Some performances are on formal stages with all the amenities, but others will (hopefully) continue to preserve the feel of the event as it began here, and as it is in France, where musicians can be found playing unplugged in rather primitive and impromptu performance spaces. That’s strings, horns, harmonicas, autoharps, dulcimers (both kinds), percussion, and unaccompanied voices. Plan to navigate to the acts you know you want to see, and allow time for discovery and exploration that avoids getting trapped where you know you don’t want to be. It really is something, and it can be a whole lot of fun. Check the full program, at least the part that’s official, at www.makemusicpasadena.org/program.html.
+
It’s all ages, and it’s all free!

Janet’s band THE PARLOR BOYS include sensational musicians: JOHN REYNOLDS has been called “best-on-the-planet 1930s style guitarist” and plectrum banjo whistling master; hobo bon vivant MARQUIS HOWELL plays stand-up bass with an authentically inspired vintage panache; the ever entertaining IAN WHITCOMB – GRAMMY winner, author, historian and British invader of pop music fame back in the 1960s; and the extraordinary BENNY BRYDERN, classically trained violin player who spends his summers conducting orchestras in Europe. All the gents in the group avidly collect old recordings – 78 rpm records and earlier – and are immersed in the pursuit of capturing an authentic and adroit vintage sound by way their own personal and soulful musical style.

On this day in history…
+
Forty years ago today, on June 17, 1972, a security guard in the parking garage of the Watergate Hotel / Office complex in Washington, D.C., noticed that duct tape had been applied to the lock mechanism of a door to prevent it from locking shut.

The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events, in ever-UPDATED EDITIONS will continue to bring you more news of concerts, club gigs, workshops, benefit shows, festivals and more (always more -- as we dig out from beneath the incoming mountains of email telling us about it, so we can organize it and tell YOU about all of it).
.
We’ll keep covering the world of current acoustic music happenings and bringing you "heads up" notices to buy advance tix for shows likely to sell-out – and lots more.
We’ll continue to tell you what acoustic musicians are doing, in the studio, on the stage, and as activist / artists seeking to improve things for all of us. We’ll tell you about the growing number of radio & TV shows with live acoustic performances (when it’s radio, it’s available mostly on the web, of course, since the Guide is published from acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.) .
.
And, as Summer arrives and the 2012 FESTIVAL SEASON progresses, we’ll bring you news and reviews of the many acoustic music festivals happening near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere.
.
As always, thanks for making the journey with us. With your help, the road goes on forever (even if we can’t afford the gas anymore to find out where it goes)! .
