VENUS TRANSIT?
+
It's hard enough getting around L.A. using public transit. BUT TUESDAY, the planet Venus "transits" the sun, and it's the last chance for over a hundred years to see it. If you still have your "eclipse viewer" from this year's Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival, you're good to go! Venus will begin its transit across the face of the sun at 3:04 pm Pacific time, and last until after local sunset. The planet will appear about 1/32 the size of the sun, so it won't be obvious like the eclipse was. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, stare (or even momentarily look) at the sun without a proper filter! But if you've got a #32 welding glass, or one of the approved Mylar filter films, this is a don't-miss-it-event. Historically, the transit of Venus was how astronomers first measured the size of the Solar System and distances in space!
