What, no more women’s water polo on TV? No more cheering for the fleet of foot, the sultans of splash? After Sunday, no more Olympics for two years? And then we’ll need long johns and ear muffs for the next one? Unthinkable, amidst all this sultry heat.

Hey, some delightful outdoor concerts happen all over the place in the evenings, when it cools-off nicely. And those wonderful air-conditioned indoor venues need your business after the hits they took during The Games. You can still add some great times and fond memories this summer, y’know.

For about the same price as a crappy new movie and popcorn, you can enjoy live music (and better food than fake-butter-drenched popcorn). Seriously. So go hear some live music! You deserve it, already. We do our part to get you there. HUNDREDS of choices await, herein.

1) NORAH JONES, the fabulous multi Grammy winner, plays the Hollywood Bowl Friday.

2) On SATURDAY, wow: there’s NEIL DIAMOND reprising his “HOT August Night” with a 40th Anniversary tour, including one of several shows at the Greek Theatre in L.A., where he played the original; there’s LOAFER’S GLORY with the second of their two local CD release shows,at McCabe’s; there’s TOM RUSSELL playing the Caltech Folk Music Society series; there’s CAL PHIL’s “Festival on the Green” in Arcadia; there’s THE FOLK COLLECTION playing Russ & Julie's House Concert series; and there’s a double-bill with Goin’ South Band and Sugar in the Gourd at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena; and of course, MORE.

3) On SUNDAY, there’s Sligo Rags at the Coffee Gallery Backstage; and the free weekly “GRAND OLE ECHO;” and wow, there’s the annual “BLUEGRASS AT THE FORD” concert, featuring THE LONESOME RIVER BAND and LONESOME OTIS, presented by the Bluegrass Association of Southern California (BASC), at one of the Guide’s most-favorite outdoor venues, the John Anson Ford Theater in Hollywood; pack a picnic dinner with the beverages of your choice (alcohol is allowed in) and enjoy a fine and fun night of bluegrass under the stars. JIM STUBBLEFIELD’s fiery acoustic guitar-based trio is always a fantastic listening experience.

INCENDIO is an acclaimed world-guitar-fusion trio. In both Italian and Spanish, their name means “fire,” and the moniker fits them, an ensemble whose sound is all about energy, exploration, and passion. At the heart of INCENDIO’s sound is the Latin or Spanish guitar, conjuring romantic as well as powerful and bold images. They call their style “Latin Guitar World Fusion”. Averaging 50+ concerts a year for the last six years, INCENDIO’s live show has become an explosive improvisatory journey that brings tremendous audience response in places as diverse as the “Strawberry Music Fest” in Yosemite, the “Sundance Film Festival,” “Verizon Music Festivaltalina,” “Jazztraxlifornia World Festival,” and many more. Herb Pedersen is marvelous on guitar and vocals. A member of the Desert Rose Band, Pedersen also fronted his own band called the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, and worked with the Pine Valley Boys, Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, Smokey Grass Boys, Old and in the Way, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tony Rice, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne, John Denver, John Jorgenson, and Leland Sklar.

Tom Sauber plays fiddle and banjo and does vocals. He has helped bring authentic traditional music to the film industry. In 1980, along with Ry Cooder and David Lindley, he played the music for the motion picture “The Long Riders.” He appeared in “Bound for Glory,” “Geronimo,” and numerous TV movies and series.

PATRICK SAUBER plays banjo and mandolin, and does vocals. He’s toured Japan and works frequently with Grammy winner LAURIE LEWIS. Patrick is son of old time player Tom Sauber, and he has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good solid Scruggs-style 5-string banjo and mandolin, from Bill Monroe to more current styles. He sings all the needed parts in the harmony trio and quartet numbers.

BILL BRYSON plays upright bass and does vocals. Where hasn’t this guy been? Bill has a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled upright bass players in the business, he's been with great groups that include The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. He's a wonderful lead singer, and is in demand one as one of the best baritones today. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

THE FOLK COLLECTION are Tony Unger, Ed Labowitz, Mike Sirota and bass man Bob Packham. They grew up in the 1960s, fell in love with the story-songs and 3-part harmonies of that acoustic era, and do their best to recreate the magic. Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School. Mike joined the group in 2003 and Bob in early 2005.

Much of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages. With songs like "This Land is Your Land," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Where Have all the Flowers Gone?," and John Denver tunes, as well as Tony's original compositions, The Folk Collection is reminiscent of such groups as The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, The New Christy Minstrels, and The Brothers Four.

They put on a show centered around folk music and good clean jokes. The Folk Collection could just as well be named the "Singing the Classic Songs of the '60s Folk Era" group. They get audiences singing along, toe-tapping, and wanting more.

It's been five years since The Folk Collection last graced the stage at Russ & Julie's House Concerts and the hosts tell us, “We're happy to have them back for what is guaranteed to be another fun evening.”

“My KoAloha Story” follows KoAloha Ukulele owner ALVIN OKAMI and his journey into the craft. Alvin and his ohana – Hawai’iain for “family” – have been dedicated to crafting the highest quality ukes for going on two decades. Their story goes beyond that, into music and family and how a small instrument can change lives and bring people together. ALAN joins ALVIN, two members of the OKAMI KoAloha ohana at this evening event.

Before the program, guests are welcome to DANIEL HO and ALAN OKAMI for a one-hour workshop titled “UKULELE 101” at 5 pm. Ross Altman, folk singer, guitarist, and political activist, performs a selection of Woody Guthrie’s songs. Those songs of social protest drew upon the Dust Bowl culture, gave voice to the disenfranchised, and, as the show’s producers say, “are as relevant today as when they were written some 70 years ago.”

Peter Dreier, professor and chair of the Urban & Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College, will discuss how Guthrie’s experiences in Southern California during the Depression inspired his radical views about social and political conditions. Dreier will also sign copies of his recently published book, “The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame.” The book includes Woody Guthrie among the 100 artists, activists, thinkers, organizers, writers, and politicians profiled.
