UPDATES have been made from original publication date and as late as August 8…

Yes, we, too are gaga about the Hungarian Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team. But life needs balance. Beautiful form. Beautiful tans. Beautiful motion. And some rockin’ acoustic music. Take time away from the Olympics to support your local live music venue. There are sooooooooo many choices, awaiting within! (And we add more, frequently, to each edition after it’s published.)

PLUS: A new edition of the Guide’s NEWS FEATURES will post in time for weekend planning, Friday morning.

Saturday’s FESTIVALS

~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~

 .

Sat, Aug 4, FESTIVAL, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick, in Altadena:

1 pm-1 am  3rd Annual “New L.A. Folk Fest” with performances by Tom Brosseau, Triple Chicken Foot, Dustbowl Revival, Gwendolyn & her new-fangled country band, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, Leslie Stevens, Beachwood Sparks, Cowboy & Indian, David Feuer, Domingo Siete, Dirt Bird, Fort King, Geronimo Getty, Emily Lacy, Restavrant, RT N’ the 44s, Spindrift, Oliwa & the Pleasure Circus, Stripminers, Tommy Santee Klaws, Sea of Bees, Yellow Red Sparks, Pisces, Kera and the Lesbians, Avolcano, Madame Headdress, Kitchen Hips, Tall Tales and the Silver Lining, Mrs. Hobbs and Ketchup Soup, Jenny Long, White Magic, Ocha La Rocha, Guy Blakeslee, and maybe more, at Zorthian Ranch, 3990 N Fair Oaks Av, Altadena 91001.

+

L.A. has long needed a midsummer folk festival. Making its third appearance this year, again with lots of up-and-coming acts and rootsy-Americana bands that you’d find it difficult to track-down in multiples anywhere else, this just might be it.

+

Come early for the acoustic sets. For example, gwendolyn & her new-fangled country band play an unplugged acoustic set at 1:45 pm to kick-off one stage. Organizers say, “The first few hours feature acoustic, unplugged performances all over the ranch, then we'll plug in for the rest of the day.” They add, “There is a pool, and other water-related activities will be available. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as there is limited parking. We provide the fun atmosphere. Attendees are responsible for their own safety and well-being at the ranch.”

+

Triple Chicken Foot, probably the top old-time trio in Los Angeles, tells us, “We'll be playing a square dance set at this fantastic festival filled with great music and fun times. Dances called by our old buddy from the Bay, Jordan Ruyle.”

+

This is an all-ages event. That may come as a surprise to those who know something of the fabled and legendary past of this storied ranch. The pool, which will be open to festival-goers, was once home to a beloved tribe of water nymphs who, years before the Olympics had heard of synchronized swimming, performed a water ballet, sans swimwear. The place has always been about peace and love, and attendees at the two previous years’ festivals attest that the deeply rooted vibe makes it the perfect home for this event.

+

Info at http://lafolkfest.com with plenty of details, what to bring. what not to bring, and more.

+

Tickets available by phone, toll-free, at 855-2-FLAVOR (855-235-2867), or online at http://fla.vor.us/1131394-The-3rd-New-LA-Folk-Fest-tickets/The-3rd-New-LA-Folk-Fest-Altadena-Zorthian-Ranch-August-04-2012.html.

Venue hosts lots of music, is located next to Buffalo Wild Wings and “just a long, lazy made-in-China tube sock toss across the street from Wal-Mart.”

Tonight, three of their most recent popular singer-songwriters take the stage, ‘”swapping songs and telling tales about major chords, minor lifts, bad gigs, good hooks, inspiration and perspiration, bridges, rhymes and assorted songwriting crimes.”

+

They are:

LAURA BROWNE-SORENSON, who has played solo, and as part of the BROWNE SISTERS & GEORGE CAVANAUGH, the acclaimed Celtic folk group. She'll be playing selections from her latest album of all original material, “Marilyn Drive.” More at www.myspace.com/laurabrownesorenson.

+

CHUCK ROBERTS, “the evil musical mastermind” behind Dog Tales, an independent syndicated show running on over 120 stations across the country, he is “an uncommonly sharp and passionate songwriter who isn't afraid to push a few buttons or toss the road map out the window. His rousing roadhouse Americana takes on modern life and what it all means will crawl into your heart, kick off their shoes and have their mail delivered there.” More at www.reverbnation.com/charliebroberts.

+

JOHN ZIPPERER, head rascal of the raggle taggle band of musical gypsies known as JOHN ZIPPERER & FRIENDS, flying solo, “offering-up his wry but upbeat take on folk, pop, blues and rock'n'roll, a combination that wanders somewhere between the musical eclecticism and good-timey vibe of the Lovin' Spoonfull and the simple pop pleasures of Buddy Holly and the early Beatles.” More at www.johnzipperer.com.

+

Venue serves coffeehouse fare and light meals. There's never a cover charge, but there is a one purchase minimum.

+

Want to perform here? Contact their music guy, Kevin Burton Smith, at kvnsmith@thrillingdetective.com. Butler’s says, “He's always looking for new talent and old favorites he can count on. If he said he'd get back in touch and he hasn't, NAG him.”

Sat, Aug 4, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:

8-10 pm “ERNEST TROOST’S JUKE JOINT GANG” monthly showcase brings Lauren Adams, BETH FITCHET WOOD, TOM KELL, and performing host Ernest Troost, at The Talking Stick, 1411c Lincoln Bl, Venice 92091; www.thetalkingstick.net; 310-450-6052.

ERNEST TROOST is L.A.’s Piedmont Blues specialist, he won a top award at the Kerrville Folk Festival (the one that lasts three weeks every year), he’s composed a TON of music for TV and the movies, and his originals have been covered by many others.

+

Lauren Adams is performing solo acoustic tonight, and The Guide has high regard for her music. Here are some excerpts from the review in our News Features edition of July 27, 2012:

+

“Lauren’s song ‘Thirsty,’ title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock.

“Lauren found a Michigander in the crowd to receive the dedication of her song, “Henry from Saginaw Michigan.” It’s a solid honkytonker that should have ’em dancin’ at the Cowboy Palace. [She will perform that song tonight.]

Sun, Aug 5, A “FREE SHOW-of-the-WEEK,” on the radio:

6-8 pm “FolkScene,” the long-running show hosted by ROZ LARMAN, broadcasts the live show that Chris Smither did recently at McCabe's. It’s on broadcast radio KPFK at 90.7 FM, and on the web at www.kpfk.org. If you miss it, no fear: catch it for the next two weeks at http://archive.kpfk.org.

+

NICK SMITH of the Caltech Folk Music Society tells us, “He's a great performer and songwriter, and [you] won't want to miss him. Let's hope he does the terrific song, “No Love Today,” about the man who sells vegetables on the street.”

+

In addition, Nick says, “If you go to hear Loafer's Glory [liva at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, at the same time as the radio broadcast], you can catch up with this on the KPFK Audio Archives, where you can [currently, for another week] also hear a fine show Roz did with Peter Alsop this past Sunday, July 29. You can also hear Mary Katherine Aldin's and Mark Humphrey's (along with others!) tribute to Woody GuthrIe for a few more weeks on the Archives from July 14.”

 .

Sun, Aug 5, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick, added by the venue at the LAST MINUTE:

7 pm LOAFER’S GLORY, the all-star acoustic roots band of Herb pedersen, Tom sauber, Patrick sauber. & Bill Bryson, plays one of their two local CD release shows, this one on very short notice, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).

+

The band says, “Our new CD on Arhoolie Records is a pip. We hope to see you there and be in on the fun, where we publicly humiliate each other, and play some hot music for you!”

+

The Guide received an advance copy of the mastered tracks that became this CD. It is one of the best albums of this or any year.

+

LOAFER'S GLORY features legends of pickin' & grinnin'. It’s a unique engagement of the finest of bluegrass players. Live? They deliver a show that you’ll talk about for years.

+

Herb Pedersen is marvelous on guitar and vocals. A member of the Desert Rose Band, Pedersen also fronted his own band called the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, and worked with the Pine Valley Boys, Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, Smokey Grass Boys, Old and in the Way, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tony Rice, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne, John Denver, John Jorgenson, and Leland Sklar.

+

Tom Sauber plays fiddle and banjo and does vocals. He has helped bring authentic traditional music to the film industry. In 1980, along with Ry Cooder and David Lindley, he played the music for the motion picture “The Long Riders.” He appeared in “Bound for Glory,” “Geronimo,” and numerous TV movies and series.

+

PATRICK SAUBER plays banjo and mandolin, and does vocals. He’s toured Japan and works frequently with Grammy winner LAURIE LEWIS. Patrick is son of old time player Tom Sauber, and he has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good solid Scruggs-style 5-string banjo and mandolin, from Bill Monroe to more current styles. He sings all the needed parts in the harmony trio and quartet numbers.

+

BILL BRYSON plays upright bass and does vocals. Where hasn’t this guy been? Bill has a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled upright bass players in the business, he's been with great groups that include The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. He's a wonderful lead singer, and is in demand one as one of the best baritones today. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

+

All that, and the intimate atmosphere of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, where no seat is more than 20 feet from the stage. Plus great lighting and sound, and this band? Oh, yeah.

+

Their new CD on Arhoolie Records will be available at the show. Tix, $18.

Sun, Aug 5, an “EVENT-of-the-DECADE,” live on TV and the web:

10:31 pm NASA’s “Curiosity” lander, aka the Volkswagen-sized Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), touches-down on the Red Planet and and will be broadcast live at 10:31 pm (Pacific).

+

For the hardcore geeks out there, watching “live” is relative. It’ll take about eight minutes at the speed of light for the spacecraft’s signal to reach earth. So, “live” happened eight minutes ago on Mars… but there’s no way to get the news any faster. Ask Albert Einstein about that.

+

Some cable and satellite providers bring you the NASA Channel, which will cover the landing live and have lots of special programming leading up to it. Alas, many cable systems do not give you that channel, even though they get it free from the government. If you are thusly deprived, the whole thing will be live on the web, at www.nasa.gov. On the web, that is, with a caution. Keep reading.

+

There’s A WHOLE LOT available online in advance of the landing, include a cool “landing on Mars game” and other interactive gadgets you should download in advance, before the rush locks-up the site. Getting into Mars exploration online has never been so accessible! Seriously, it’s recommended you download anything interactive NOW, because the server will likely be overloaded as the landing time approaches. You can even download a really sophisticated landing simulation game for X-Box.

+

Here are some key urls:

You can follow the mission on Facebook at www.facebook.com/marscuriosity

A very full version of ways to play Martian is available at www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2012-205&cid=release_2012-205.

.

And the new NASA 3-D app that gives you the ability to experience robotic space travel is at www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2012-202&cid=release_2012-202.

+

The Guide’s NEWS FEATURES edition for July 20 (anniversary of the first Moon landing) has a full feature story on Curiosity and the future of Mars and space exploration. It focuses on whether we really WANT to find life on Mars. That’s a tougher question than you may think. It’s feature # 8 at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2012/07/news-features-acoustic-americana-music.html.

+

For extra fun while watching the landing, put on your rose-colored sunglasses to give everything a reddish-orange glow, tape a print-out of Marvin the Martian (the brush-helmeted nemesis of Bugs Bunny) to your wall, and stock-up on Mars candy bars… Klatu barada nikto.

Just before he performs in Riga, Latvia (for the “Day of Riga Festival”); Oslo, Norway; Hamburg, Germany; Manchester, UK; Gothenburg, Sweden; and Ekaterinburg, Russia, Xander Smith does just one show in Los Angles, touring the release of his new video, "Oh Caitlin," and his debut solo record, “Hey San Pedro.”

+

Directed by Emmy award-winning actor-director Michael A. Goorjian, thr video looks the way the record sounds – lo-fi, gentle, and homespun. In fact, it was shot in just two hours outside Smith's apartment under his favorite tree.

+

The video release coincides with upcoming European tour dates, which take Smith from Los Angeles all the way to Siberia. Fans and "Kickstarter" supporters from halfway around the world have helped Smith to coordinate these shows and street-team for “Hey San Pedro.”

+

While abroad, Smith will be joined on stage by various musicians including members of UK's New Order, Sweden's Division of Laura Lee and Refused and Russia's Mumiy Troll. His new CD has received L.A. airplay on KCRW and KCSN, and favorable reviews in blogs and magazines, including Variety, Uncut, BuzzbandsLA, and LA Slush. The CD has consistently sold out and been restocked at Amoeba since its release in May 2012.

Thursday August 9

~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~ .

.

On this day in 1945, a four-engine B-29 aircraft with an aluminum exterior gleaming like silver in the sunshine, dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan. The city was constructed mostly of wood and rice paper buildings and the blast of the bomb, being hotter than the surface of the sun, caused the entire city to burn with massive losses of life. The second of two uses of The Bomb – the first on August 6, 1945, on Hiroshima – it was this second bomb that would finally compel the Emperor of Japan to stop the warlords who controlled the government. Japan surrendered unconditionally to the United States and the Allies, with an unpublicized provision that the Emperor would remain as head of state, but not head of government.

.

It put an end to the Second World War, which had begun in irrevocable stages with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and the German and Soviet invasions of Poland in 1939.

.

Today, Germany and Japan are both thriving democracies, following reconstruction of their ruined economies and postwar constitutions based on election of leaders by their populations. Poland was finally freed of Soviet military occupation in 1993, after gaining independence again in 1989. And Germany was partitioned by the victorious Allies, and only reunited in modern times. The story of Eastern Europe, through the ethnic wars in the Balkans in the 1990s, tragically demonstrates that the idea World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945 is quite naive.

.

At least 60 million people were killed during the years of conflict of World War II, roughly 2.5% of the world’s population. Modern computer studies have raised that to an estimate of 71 to 72 million. The Soviet Union lost somewhere between 21 million and 26.6 million dead; China lost 11.3 million; Poland 6.8 million; the U.S. 500,000. Germany lost 7 million dead (8.8 million if all those drafted into the German military from all countries are counted); Germany lost 8 to 10% of its prewar population, and 19.5% of all prewar ethnic Germans died. Plus, the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews and at least 5 million additional “undesirables.”

.

Japan lost 2.6 to 3.1 million people killed, or 3.6 to 4.3% of its pre-war population. Of those, the official estimates of 90,000 to 166,000 deaths in Hiroshima and 60,000 to 80,000 in Nagasaki are regarded as conservative estimates. Many who were initially wounded or burned in the atomic blasts died later of radiation poisoning, and the above numbers, though probably low, reflect that (many sources were consulted; those wishing to research atomic deaths and illnesses should check www.atomicarchive.com).

.

The true numbers of human beings whose lives were ended in World War II will never be known. Revisionist historians have second-guessed President Truman’s decision to use the atomic bombs, and that continues to this day. It cannot be argued that the two bombs ended a war that would have claimed substantially more people dead had that war continued, especially if had seen a land invasion of Japan by Allied forces. At the same time, it cannot be argued that survivors of the two bombs suffered radiation-related maladies that were unknown to humanity before the bombs were dropped. And it cannot be argued that survivors of any war in any time – including our own – are traumatized and suffer wounds – visible and invisible – that affect them and their families for life. It’s worth a few moments to reflect on that, isn’t it?

Thu, Aug 9, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:

8 pm Superb double-bill with 2-BIT PALOMINO and MARINA V at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).

+

Houston, Texas-based 2-BIT PALOMINO is an acoustic trio, awarded "Vocal Group of the Year" in 2011 by the Academy of Texas Music. it won't take you long to figure out why. Aside from their amazing harmonies, their music is emotive, melodious, thoughtful and lyrical.

+

The trio is Bill Ward on acoustic guitar, keyboards and vocals; Andi Renfree on percussion and vocals; and Peter "Ren" Renfree on acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele and vocals.

+

"There is nothing 2-bit about their sound. These performers already sound like they have been playing together for a long time. You know that is true when the show seems too short!" - Russell Cushman, The Navasota Current (Oct 22, 2010)

+

It started under the shade of the Cypress Pond at Mercer Arboretum in Spring, TX (just north of Houston). The date was March 4th, 2010 and what started as a songwriting venture quickly turned into a fast moving freight train of musical performance. 2-Bit Palomino was born and named after the grocery store ponies that we rode as youths, and allowed our imaginations to run wild.

+

That offers some idea of what you will find at a 2-Bit Palomino performance. Some say it’s a chance to let your imagination go to uncharted places.

+

Ward is an accomplished singer-songwriter from Florida, and his singing and playing have won him many awards at folk festivals throughout the country. Andi Renfree’s musical journey started in Austin at the tender age of 17 and has taken her all over the world. She has penned hundreds of songs, and has had over 40 cuts, including "The Buffalo Grass" (with her lyrics) recorded by the late Chris LeDoux on his "Horsepower" CD in 2003 on Capitol Records.

+

MARINA V is an L.A.-based longtime favorite of the Guide. She is a multiple award-winning recording artist with a "hauntingly beautiful" voice (L.A. Times), whose "melodic and passionate music" (The Washington Post) has been influenced by the Beatles, Tchaikovsky and Tori Amos. Born in Moscow, Marina came to America at age 15 to pursue her version of the American Dream. Since then, she has been relentlessly touring and performing all over the world and has blossomed into a truly renowned international artist.

+

MARINA has played over 600 shows worldwide, from The Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and the American Embassy in Moscow to clubs from Sydney to Paris. Marina raised $30,000 from her loyal fans to record her new album, “MY STAR.” Produced by Guy Erez (Gypsy Kings), it features guest musicians from KISS and Collective Soul.

+

Marina's songs have appeared in films, TV shows, ads and games, and she recently won an award from Sir Bob Geldof in London. Take a look and a listen at www.MarinaV.com.

Tickets are $15, a real bargain for this show.

 .

Sat, Aug 11, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:

8 pm TOM RUSSELL, one of new-folk’s best performing songwriters, returns to his Southern Cal roots to play the “Caltech Folk Music Society” series at Beckman Institute Auditorium, 400 S Wilson Av, on the Caltech campus in Pasadena; 626-395-4652. Park free at the end of Michigan Av, south off Del Mar. Get tix early, as this will sell-out.

+

Tom Russell steps front and center with guitarist Thad Beckman in, coincidentally enough, Beckman Institute Auditorium, known to locals as “Little Beckman.” (No, that doesn’t make Thad “Big Beckman;” Caltech has one of those, too.)

+

Tom has never performed at Caltech, and series producers Rex and Nick tell us, “We're very excited to welcome him.”

+

About his most recent recording, “Mesabi,” the Washington Post wrote last year, "The album consistently confirms Russell’s status as one of the best singer-songwriters of our time." The Boston Globe called the CD "a crafted treasure of engaging nobility" and the Chicago Sun Times wrote, "A master storyteller triumphs." There is an almost literary quality to his work, as many of his songs zero in on individuals and situations with intensity and insight.

+

San Francisco poet, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, wrote, "Tom Russell is Johnny Cash, Jim Harrison and Charles Bukowski rolled into one. I feel a great affinity with Tom Russell's songs, for he is writing out of the wounded heart of America." Author Annie Prouxl called him "an original, a brilliant songwriter with a restless curiosity and an almost violent imagination."

+

This concert affords an intimate opportunity for you to come hear and decide for yourself. WE’re confident you will leave suitably impressed, and with one or more of his many CDs.

+

You can get a taste of Tom Russell’s music on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAp3bhouXYI with a solo performance of the song “Love Abides,” and at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1Au1HeVzwU for his signature treatment of the classic song, “Navajo Rug.”

+

There’s plenty more on Tom's web site, http://www.tomrussell.com.

+

Rex and Nick add, “We highly recommend that you get your tickets in advance and get them soon. Half of the seats are sold, so we may be out by the night of the concert”. Tickets are $22, $5 for Caltech students and children, for this show and You can order them from the Caltech Ticket Office at 626-395-4652.

Sat, Aug 11:

8 pm THE FOLK COLLECTION brings all the classic songs of the ’50s-’60s Folk Revival era for an evening at “Russ and Julie's House Concert” Series in Oak Park (Agoura Hills / Westlake Village area). Reservations get directions at 818-707-2179 or rsvp@houseconcerts.us.

+

THE FOLK COLLECTION are Tony Unger, Ed Labowitz, Mike Sirota and bass man Bob Packham. They grew up in the 1960s, fell in love with the story-songs and 3-part harmonies of that acoustic era, and do their best to recreate the magic. Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School. Mike joined the group in 2003 and Bob in early 2005.

+

Much of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages. With songs like "This Land is Your Land," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Where Have all the Flowers Gone?," and John Denver tunes, as well as Tony's original compositions, The Folk Collection is reminiscent of such groups as The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, The New Christy Minstrels, and The Brothers Four.

+

They put on a show centered around folk music and good clean jokes. The Folk Collection could just as well be named the "Singing the Classic Songs of the '60s Folk Era" group. They get audiences singing along, toe-tapping, and wanting more.

+

It's been five years since The Folk Collection last graced the stage at Russ & Julie's House Concerts and the hosts tell us, “We're happy to have them back for what is guaranteed to be another fun evening.”

+

Catch the Folk Collection's promotional video at http://vimeo.com/8589738.

+

Suggested donation for the evening is $20 per person, payable in cash at the door. All the money goes to the performers. Included is a potluck-style coffee and dessert buffet. Doors at 7:30 pm, show at 8.

+

The Guide has high regard for LAUREN ADAMS. Here are some excerpts from the Guide’s review in our News Features edition of July 27, 2012:

+

“Lauren’s song ‘Thirsty,’ title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock.

+

“Lauren found a Michigander in the crowd to receive the dedication of her song, “Henry from Saginaw Michigan.” It’s a solid honkytonker that should have ’em dancin’ at the Cowboy Palace.

+

“… Be sure to catch Lauren Adams when she performs in town, or at her monthly “Americana Song Circle” showcase at Genghis Cohen.”

Sat, Sep 15, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:

2 pm “WOODY GUTHRIE’S MUSIC & LEGACY” with Ross Altman and Peter Dreier, presented today as half of a two-part celebration of the life, music, and legacy of folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), at the Allendale Branch Library, 1130 S Marengo Av, Pasadena 91106; www.pasadenapubliclibrary.net; 626-744-7260.

+

Ross Altman, folk singer, guitarist, and political activist, performs a selection of Woody Guthrie’s songs. Those songs of social protest drew upon the Dust Bowl culture, gave voice to the disenfranchised, and, as the show’s producers say, “are as relevant today as when they were written some 70 years ago.”

+

Peter Dreier, professor and chair of the Urban & Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College, will discuss how Guthrie’s experiences in Southern California during the Depression inspired his radical views about social and political conditions. Dreier will also sign copies of his recently published book, “The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame.” The book includes Woody Guthrie among the 100 artists, activists, thinkers, organizers, writers, and politicians profiled.

+
