First, and quick...
.
The L.A. COUNTY FAIR is now open, and you can get in the gate for just $1 through TODAY, Labor Day Monday, if you go in between 10 am and 1 pm. (After that it gets pricey, $17 for adults.)
+
This year's fair is profoundly lacking in folk-americana music acts, but there's plenty to do and see in its vast expanse of nooks and crannies.
+
ABSOLUTELY see "GENIUS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN INNOVATION" in Building 8. In addition to full-size Wright Brothers aeroplanes and first-rate displays on early flight, everybody from STEVE JOBS to GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER is represented. And you must check the schedule to have a conversation with BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (the top reenactor playing that role is pure delight!)

.
Unless you're at the new "MAMMOTH BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL" in the Eastern Sierra at Mammoth Lakes or at the "STRAWBERRY MUSIC FESTIVAL" near Yosemite, then you need to know what's happening around these parts.
.
So here goes:
.
At 2 pm, "THE WOODY SHOW: A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO LEGENDARY FOLK ARTIST WOODY GUTHRIE" happens at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1491 Topanga Cyn Bl in Topanga. Woody actually lived there, and you can see his cabin. Moreover, any time they present a tribute show to folk music's greatest icon, the Geer troupe does it right! Highly recommended.
.
At 7:30 pm, a special, early start time, "RONNIE MACK'S BARN DANCE" will once again prove to be L.A.'s answer to the Grand Ole Opry. This month's show brings musical birthday tributes to BUDDY HOLLY and PATSY CLINE, and to the very much alive ROSIE FLORES.
+
Performing are Rosie herself, plus ROCKY BURNETTE (top ten hit, "Tired of Toein' the Line"), BIG SANDY & HIS FLY-RITE BOYS, DAVE STUCKEY, THE BIG MANNY BAND, upright bass legend RAY CAMPI, RIP MASTERS, RUSSELL SCOTT & HIS RED HOTS, RUBY JAMES, KARLING ABBEYGATE (Karling & the Atomics), KATHY ROBERTSIN, PATTY BOOKER, THE DUSK DEVILS, CROWN CITY BOMBERS, MAUREEN & THE MERCURY FIVE, and the truly all-star BARN DANCE BAND (the best stirling talent house band on the West Coast.
+
We love Rosie Flores, a big star who never acts like one, and who is as amazing as ever. And we caught Karling & the Atomics at last month's "BIGHORN MOUNTAIN MUSIC FESTIVAL." Karling is a hoot, and she was a triple-winner at the 16th annual "Los Angeles Music Awards." The Oxford American celebrated her as "Editors pick of the month."
+
It all happens 7:30 pm to 1:30 am at Joe's Great American Bar & Grill, 4311 W Magnolia Bl, Burbank 91505.

.
Of course, there is a whole lot MORE happening tonight (and waaaay into the future), and we cordially invite you to peruse the latest full edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide's "Spotlight Events" section to find it. That was published August 24 and it's available below or in the sidebar at left, depending on which edition you are reading.
.
.
More soon, when we can wade into all of it and organize it for presentation to you!
.
Enjoy your holiday from laboring, or recharge your batteries if you need to resume your efforts tomorrow to find a new gig so you CAN labor. And take a moment for a simple "thank you" to those working today to keep the rest of us safe.
