First…
If you’re headed to the LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIR, here’s the Guide’s review to help you plan:
+
The L.A. County Fairgrounds – Fairplex – in Pomona can be thoroughly perused at www.fairplex.com. The world’s largest county Fair runs the month of September. There is an evening concert series and your admission to the fair does NOT get you into those concerts. However, some free tix are distributed at 3 pm on the day of each concert, for the show that night. Otherwise, tix range from $19.50 to $100, plus the always high processing charges at www.ticketmaster.com. Or buy ’em at the fair and save the extra fees.
+
The Guide is listing ONLY A FEW of the Fair’s concerts. While there is plenty to do and see, there is, unfortunately, profoundly less folk-americana and acoustic music than in past years. There is a smattering of music and dance in the traditions of Mexico, and there is some jazz, chiefly Latin jazz, if that’s your thing.
+
There are dozens of performances of one kind or another – children’s shows, magic shows, radio-Disney-derived-annoyances, etc. – on multiple stages, but unlike recent years, these stages don’t feature acoustic or Americana music. Though major national trends are moving away from sh-thump-thud / revolving door rehab / pop tart du jour / American Karaoke crap, musically, you’ll be dodging the sonic infestations and knots of head-bobbers at this year’s fair. It’s still VERY worth going, but with a few exceptions, not for the music.
+
A MUST-SEE at the fair is “GENIUS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN INNOVATION” in Building 8. It’s an exhibition worthy of any major museum, with full-size WRIGHT BROTHERS aeroplanes, all of STEVE JOBS patents, an exhibit on HENRY FORD and the development of automobile manufacturing, a tribute to GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER, and the best BENJAMIN FRANKLIN reenactor portraying the archetype American genius. You simply must spend time conversing with Ben, and you’ll find that the highlight of the fair.
+
The troupe of girl loggers are quite entertaining, if they haven’t been forced to stop from serious bodily injury by the time you read this. And a visit to the US Forest Service fire lookout tower, relocated from the top of a mountain to the top of a forested hill in the fair, is fun and worthwhile.
+
Fair admission is $17 adults, and does not include concert admission, unless you can capture those free tix distributed at 3 pm for that evening’s concert (each person who wants one of those tix must be present to receive it). Parking is another $14, but there’s a closely-guarded secret: you can find free street parking north of the fairgrounds, if you don’t mind a walk in to reach the parking lot tram.
+
+
Here are the Fair’s few (but very good) Americana concerts and others we think will interest you:
+
Sun, Sep 16, 7:30 pm, “MARIACHI USA FIESTA” with MARIACHI USA ALL STARZ, and MARIACHI USA BALLET FOLKLORICO.
+
Sun, Sep 23, 7:30 pm, PISTOL ANNIES, the country trio ensemble of MIRANDA LAMBERT, ASHLEY MONROE, and ANGALEENA PRESLEY.
+
Fri, Sep 28, 7:30 pm, CHARLIE DANIELS BAND plus 38 SPECIAL and OUTLAWS.
+
Full details of each are here in the Guide.

Fri, Sep 14, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick, in Tehachapi:
7 pm FREEBO, multiple award-winning singer-songwriter and bassist to top acts, plays Fiddler’s Crossing, 206 East F St, Tehachapi 93561; www.grungehobbit.com; 661-823-9994.
+
The Guide’s “ARTIST PROFILE OF THE WEEK:”
+
Renown bassist Freebo has reinvented himself over the last 20 years as a compelling singer-songwriter. After a 30-year career providing the solid foundation for such artists as BONNIE RAITT, JOHN MAYALL, RINGO STARR, MARIA MULDAUR, NEIL YOUNG, and many other top names in blues and pop music, Freebo is now out front, giving inspiring and intimate concerts of songs that speak to spiritual nature and yearnings of humanity. One critic says Freebo's latest CD "sounds as if he's not really singing to you; he's talking to you. One of the best albums of the year."
+
Freebo will be making his second appearance at Fiddlers Crossing. He and his wife Laurie now make their home in California Hot Springs, in the foothills of the Southern Sierras. He also leads a songwriting workshop on occasion in Bakersfield, so he is no stranger to Kern County.
+
To folk, rock and blues musicians, Freebo is an icon. During his career as an in-demand bassist for stage and studio, he’s appeared on “Saturday Night Live,” “Midnight Special,” “Muppets Tonight,” and in concert with SPINAL TAP.
+
During most of that time, Freebo didn't really think about songwriting. In an interview with ROZ LARMAN on radio’s "Folkscene," Freebo talked about his gradual "metamorphosis" into a singer-songwriter, backing himself up with guitar. "I never had any aspirations to be a songwriter," he told her. "But as I played with more and more people, I realized I had a lot of musical ideas, and as a bass player, I really couldn't get them into the music. I finally realized that if I wanted to get these ideas out, the song was the place to do that." Freebo said he was fortunate to have spent so much time around great songwriters while touring as a duo with BONNIE RAITT.
+
This yearning for more creative expression drove Freebo to begin a process of "deep inner discovery" and make the conscious decision to tackle the challenges of songwriting in middle age, at the height of his career. Now, more than 20 years later, he says that this creative process has taken him to "a much higher level as a human being."
+
Perhaps it's because he came to songwriting later in life that most of Freebo's lyrics have a deep spiritual resonance. He sings about such things as the "inner angel" that guides him, about the end of a life well lived deserving "a standing ovation," as well as social issues, including homelessness.
+
Some of Freebo's songs have brought awards, including a Posi Award for "Best Song" in The Most Uniting Category, and the Los Angeles Music Award for "Best Folk Artist" in 2007. He has also won, and been a finalist in, several songwriting contests. He has just released his fourth CD, called "Something to Believe," with songs that show his musical range from blues and rock to folk and country.
+
Another clue to Freebo's sensitivity to the deeper needs of humanity might be inferred from his childhood in a small coal mining town near Philadelphia. When he grew-up there, it had a population of 50,000. Today, he said, it's down to around 5,000. "There is not a lot of industry now," he said. "It's all been shipped to China."
+
Freebo played piano and ukulele as a child, and tuba in the high school band. In college he picked up the guitar. His clear, resonant voice was a welcome addition to the bass section of both high school and college glee clubs. After college, he joined a local rock band that needed a bass player, and it proved a natural instrument for him. In 1967, he acquired the name "Freebo," and his birth name is now his well-kept secret.
+
Tehachapi is a charming mountain town. +
It tells the fictional tale of a famous 1930s singing (well, whistling) movie cowboy a la GENE AUTRY or ROY ROGERS. Except in the character’s “real” life, he’s more like JOHN CLEESE – British and Shakespearian, an actor far more comfortable in London’s West End than in the Old West. Together with “Steeves,” his gentleman’s gentleman, Rex travels to the town of Lizard Spit – “a wretched hive of scum and villainy” – to perform at the Bombay Corral. Before the dust can settle on his immaculate rhinestones, a claim has been stolen, a prospector murdered, and Rex is framed for all of it.

ROSS ALTMAN, folk singer, guitarist, and political activist, performs a selection of Woody Guthrie’s songs. +
PETER DREIER, professor and chair of the Urban & Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College, will discuss how Guthrie’s experiences in Southern California during the Depression inspired his radical views about social and political conditions. Dreier will also sign copies of his recently published book, “The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame.” The book includes Woody Guthrie among the 100 artists, activists, thinkers, organizers, writers, and politicians profiled.

It tells the fictional tale of a famous 1930s singing (well, whistling) movie cowboy a la GENE AUTRY or ROY ROGERS.

Sun, Sep 16, at the L.A. County Fair:
7:30 pm “MARIACHI USA FIESTA” with MARIACHI USA ALL STARZ, and MARIACHI USA BALLET FOLKLORICO, at the L.A. County Fair “Grandstand Concerts” series in a 90-minute condensation of the annual Hollywood Bowl event that concludes with a fireworks show, at the L.A. County Fairgrounds – Fairplex – in Pomona; www.fairplex.com. Some free tix are distributed at 3 pm on concert day; otherwise, tix range from $19.50 to $75, plus the always high processing charges at www.ticketmaster.com. Or buy at the fair and save the extra fees.
+
The world’s largest county Fair runs the month of September. The Guide is listing only a few of the Fair’s concerts. While there is plenty to do and see, there is, unfortunately, profoundly less folk-americana and acoustic music than in past years. There is a smattering of music and dance in the traditions of Mexico, and there is some jazz, chiefly Latin jazz. And there are dozens of performances of one kind or another – children’s shows, magic shows, radio-Disney-derived-annoyances, etc. – on multiple stages, but unlike recent years, these stages won’t feature acoustic or Americana music. Though major national trends are moving away from sh-thump-thud / revolving door rehab / pop tart du jour / American Karaoke crap, musically, you’ll be dodging the sonic infestations and knots of head-bobbers at this year’s fair. It’s still worth going, but with a few exceptions, not for the music.
+
A MUST-SEE at the fair is “GENIUS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN INNOVATION” in Building 8. It’s an exhibition worthy of any major museum, with full-size WRIGHT BROTHERS aeroplanes, all of STEVE JOBS patents, an exhibit on HENRY FORD and the the development of automobile manufacturing, a tribute to GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER, and the best BENJAMIN FRANKLIN reenactor portraying the archetype American genius. You simply must spend time conversing with Ben, and you’ll find that the highlight of the fair.
+
Fair admission is $17 adults, and does not include concert admission, unless you can capture those free tix distributed at 3 pm for that evening’s concert (each person who wants one of those tix must be present to receive it). Parking is another $14, but you can find free street parking north of the fairgrounds, if you don’t mind a walk in to reach the parking lot tram.

If you have the days available, go a few days early or stay after the festival and enjoy a hike or backpacking trip or some trout fishing in the High Sierra, or a hot spring soak in one of the nearby ponds.

+
Runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, through September 23. Tix: $20 adults; $16 seniors (55+) / teachers / students / military; $12 children age 12 & under.

Sun, Sep 23, at the L.A. County Fair:
7:30 pm PISTOL ANNIES, the country trio ensemble of MIRANDA LAMBERT, ASHLEY MONROE, and ANGALEENA PRESLEY, plays the L.A. County Fair “Grandstand Concerts” series at the L.A. County Fairgrounds – Fairplex – in Pomona; www.fairplex.com. Some free tix are distributed at 3 pm on concert day; otherwise, tix range from $19.50 to $100, plus the always high processing charges at www.ticketmaster.com.

(“The venue named by The Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue.”)
+
You just don’t get opportunities like this, when you can “I was there” years from now. JUNE FORAY is one of the all-time greatest voiceover artists, who was the voice of ROCKY THE FLYING SQUIRREL, TWEETY & SYLVESTER’S GRANNY, DUDLEY DORIGHT’S NELL, NATASHA THE SPY, CINDY LOU WHO, JOKEY SMURF, “Mulan’s” GRANDMOTHER FA, MRS. BUGS BUNNY, WITCH HAZEL, and DOZENS of famous cartoon characters – and she is VERY funny – will be feted by WILL RYAN, winner of two Gold records, BMI’s “Pioneer Award,” and “The Official Singing Cowboy” of both Hollywood and Burbank, and his band.
+
And, oh, that band! There’s Grammy-winner IAN WHITCOMB, Djangostyle guitar legend JOHN REYNOLDS, “Broncho” BENNY BRYDERN (who spends his summers conducting symphony orchestras in Europe), “Chaparral” KATIE CAVERA (in demand with swing music combos up and down California), and upright bass and tuba virtuoso WESTY WESTENHOFER. The Guide has often raved about ’em, and celebrated ’em, and cajoled readers to go see and hear the best ensemble act in L.A. that isn’t famous and should be.
+
Tix, $25, or $20 if you bring some flowers for June.

Fri, Sep 28, at the L.A. County Fair:
7:30 pm CHARLIE DANIELS BAND plus 38 SPECIAL and OUTLAWS plays the L.A.

No. Summer CAN’T really be over. We’re having withdrawals. If you are, too, the following will help:
.
It seems a shame to see September swallowed by the wind
And more than that, it’s oh-so sad to see the summer end
And though the changing colors are a lovely thing to see
If it were mine to make the change I think I’d let it be
But I don’t remember hearing anybody asking me.

Fri-Sun, Oct 5-7, FESTIVAL, in San Francisco:
The 12th annual “HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL” is now the nation’s largest music festival, and the largest FREE music festival. It takes-over Hellman Hollow and Lindley & Mark Meadows in Golden Gate Park in the City by the Bay with multiple stages and more roots-americana music than you can comprehend.
+
Confirmed so far are THE DEL McCOURY BAND, JERRY DOUGLAS, STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES, O’BRIEN PARTY OF 7, RALPH STANLEY & THE CLINCH MOUNTAIN BOYS, DWIGHT YOAKUM, PETER ROWAN, ELVIS COSTELLO SOLO, LAURIE LEWIS & THE RIGHT HANDS, BUDDY MILLER, CHUCK PROPHET & THE MISSION EXPRESS, NICK LOWE, PATTI SMITH, ROBERT EARL KEEN, THE MILK CARTON KIDS, HEARTLESS BASTARDS, SON VOLT, AMANDA SHAW & THE CUTE GUYS, THE SOUL REBELS, TODD SNIDER, THE TIME JUMPERS, SARA WATKINS, PATTY GRIFFIN, CHUCK MEAD & HIS GRASSY KNOLL BOYS, THE WANDERING, MIKE FARRIS & THE ROSELAND RHYTHM REVIEW, LITTLE GREEN CARDS, and a couple dozen more, with more to come.
+
Yep, amazing, astonishing, and a few hundred other good superlatives all apply. Main thing you need to do is make arrangements for a place to stay. And then send a message to the boneheads who run all the big record labels to tell them you don’t give a rat’s behind for the sh-thump-thud / revolving-door-rehab / pop-tart-du-jour stuff they peddle, but the LARGEST music event in the country books people you will travel to see and whose recordings you DO buy.
+
The festival’s website, www.strictlybluegrass.com, lets you play a “listen and identify” guessing game of who’s performing this year, and it reveals more artists and bands continually.

OMG! Just read what you wrote: "radio-Disney-derived-annoyances, etc. – on multiple stages, but unlike recent years, these stages don’t feature acoustic or Americana music. Though major national trends are moving away from sh-thump-thud / revolving door rehab / pop tart du jour / American Karaoke crap, musically, you’ll be dodging the sonic infestations and knots of head-bobbers at this year’s fair."
I laughed so hard I peed myself!
Uhh, the Guide supplies a lot, and we try to pamper you. But we don't furnish Pampers. So be careful out there. Or maybe it "Depends"where where you read it... - Larry the editor.
