10-11 pm "THE MENTALIST" series has an episode this week that centers on the unique venue for next weekend's 20th Annual SANTA CLARITA COWBOY FESTIVAL. The TV Story takes place in a fictional Old West town that is just the latest role for the real-life movie set in the Newhall portion of Santa Clarita, named Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studios.
+
It was built by the late GENE AUTRY and has been the setting for thousands of television shows, hundreds of feature films, and hundreds more commercials. Everyone from GARY COOPER to RANDOLPH SCOTT to JOHN WAYNE has walked its boardwalks and ridden horseback through its streets. More recently, it became the Black Hills boom town in HBO's gritty, no-good-guys western series, "Deadwood."
+
"The Mentalist" will likely include camera angles you've never seen before, since the rambling set is playing a different kind of role. It airs on CBS.

Here’s the Guide’s latest Music-on-TV edition, with everything from live performances by the folks you pay to see in concert, to musical films from waaay back when Lassie was a little bitty puppy dog, milk arrived on your porch in bottles, and the record player had a hand crank.
+
[Meanwhile: LIVE MUSIC EVENTS has just been updated, and it’s available at a separate click.]
+
What's happening on TV…
+
PBS is doing their infamous “Pledge Drive” again, and that means we get all the music-performance programming they hold hostage the rest of the year. It’s simple: music is their cash-cow. Of course, that seems to suggest their pleas to “send money if you want to see this kind of programming” isn’t exactly honest, since you really won’t see it again until the next pledge drive. Anyway, it’s a great chance to record shows you won’t see offered otherwise. (And if you record it, you can fast-forward through all that annoying begging.)
+
Of course, there’s plenty more music-on-TV all over the dial (dial? Why does everyone still call it a dial when it isn’t?) In addition to all the normal offerings, like what’s on Palladia, there’s a heavier-than-usual offering of musical films.
+
Plus, a CINEMATIC SPECIAL: from the middle of the night next Monday (actually, 3 am Tuesday morning) on through to 5 pm Tuesday afternoon, Turner Classic Movies presents a CHARLIE CHAPLIN marathon. You have a dozen chances to see movies starring him, or related documentaries about his work and lasting influence. Most of the offerings are classic silent moves, which, of course, are not “silent” at all, but accompanied by music. And by the way, those musical “scores” were often just stacks of annotated “lead sheets,” from which theater organists / pianists or groups of musicians ranging in size from duets or trios to orchestras, often had to improvise with music that matched the mood and on-screen action. In addition to the Chaplin films, which include his famous “little tramp,” you can come back Tuesday night / Wednesday AM, April 16 / 17, at midnight, for BUSTER KEATON in a 1925 silent classic. With all that, and the many music performances on TV, word to the wise: free-up space on that DVR…

Sunday, April 14
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
. .
This day in history, two tragedies began. Today’s anniversaries of either or both may bring TV documentaries or other programming about them:
• On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by actor John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s Theatre; he died the following morning.
• On April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg. She sank with great loss of life in thye early morning darkness of April 15.
.

. .
On this day in history, two tragedies played to conclusion. (No, not your procrastination at getting your tax returns completed before today’s deadline.) Today’s anniversaries of either or both historical disaster may bring TV documentaries about them:
• On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln died, after being shot in the head by actor John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s Theatre the evening of April 14.
• On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank with great loss of life, after striking an iceberg the night of April 14.
