Why should man value himself as more than a small part of the one great unit of creation?" -- John Muir, naturalist and explorer (1838-1914). Sat, Apr 20, pseudo-festival, multiple venues:
Annual “RECORD STORE DAY” brings participation from hundreds of independently-owned music stores across the world, and they “simultaneously unite with the purpose of celebrating our culture and the unique place that record stores occupy both in their local communities and the world.” Some offer live in-store performances, others offer special limited-edition “RSD” (Record Store Day) CD releases. Amoeba Hollywood says, “We will have tons of limited-edition, exclusive Record Store Day releases available April 20 in stores only. Remaining RSD titles will hit www.Amoeba.com on Sunday, April 21. (Sorry no discounts.)” At Amoeba Hollywood, the exclusive RSD releases are kept behind the front counters, and a line forms for them. The line for RSD will be on Ivar no earlier than 8 am on Saturday. Their RSD product is limited to stock on hand and available on a first come, first served basis. No holds, no phone orders. Limit one copy per title per customer. The Amoeba store opens at 10:30 am. There is no wait to enter for the day's festivities. Support your local record store in YOUR community. Pasadena is blessed with three great record stores; other communities have a store or two, but many towns now have NO independent record stores. Let’s celebrate and support the stalwart purveyors of brick-and-mortar music distribution.

Wed, Apr 24 through Sun, May 19, in Ventura:
“LONESOME TRAVELER” returns for a 2013 run at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura. It’s a musical event that takes audiences on a journey down the rivers and streams of American Folk Music -- from the hills of Appalachia to the nightclubs of San Francisco and New York; from the 1920s to the 1960s. Written and directed by Rubicon’s Artistic Director James O’Neil, with Musical Direction and Arrangements by Dan Wheetman.
+
"Tom Dooley," "Goodnight Irene," "Puff, the Magic Dragon," "Blowin' in the Wind," and "This Land is Your Land." These songs remind us of a time when music brought us together; when it changed us. Lonesome Traveler is a World Premier theatrical event that takes us from the backwoods of Appalachia to the nightclubs of New York and San Francisco; from the mid 1920s to the mid 1960s. Experience the music that made history and the history that made music. Rubicon Artistic Director James O'Neil directs a seven-person cast of singer/instrumentalists. More when we know it.

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.
+
STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+
Tickets for STAGECOACH are “All-in pricing,” with a “What-you-see-is-what-you-pay,” no surprises policy that others need to emulate. Prices include all fees & shipping:
General Admission, $239 (limit of 6 per household)
Package P1, $1099 (limit of 2 per household)
Package P2, $799 (limit of 6 per household)
+
Add-on VIP Parking is $100, for those who don’t want to face the walk from the far-flung parking lots. The festival notes, “ADA reserved seats will be an option at purchase while supplies last.”

The popular bluegrass-themed festival is moving from its original location at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in a bittersweet decision for the family of event founder DON TUCKER, who passed away after suffering a stroke in October. The festival’s new home, Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, is a 150-acre venue with green grass stage area, bountiful trees and two stocked lakes for fishing. The park is surrounded by a variety of hotels and offers quick and easy access from the I-10 freeway. Check out the festival video at www.promo.huckfinn.com and get all the details, including early-bird discount tix, camping, etc, at www.huckfinn.com.

Under Don Tucker’s leadership, Huck Finn achieved multiple recognitions as one of the finest family-friendly music festivals in America. We expect his family will carry on with the same commitment and continue to produce a model event.

Our Cajun-zydeco dance friends tell us, “If flying in, best to avoid a rental car & parking fees in downtown. Options for rooms include www.hotwire.com for a 3-star hotel ($68) at the airport (with shuttle from terminal) within walking distance to the Cascade light rail station. To / from downtown takes 45 minutes, and drops you 4 short blocks from the fest. [Another option is the] University Place Hotel (www.uplacehotel.com) for $113 / night, including tax & breakfast, ten blocks from the fest.” They also suggest the PSU campus dorm rooms with bath & amenities, $56 to $66 / night, 12 blocks from the fest; www.pdx.edu/conferences/stay-us, where you can click on “individual stay contract” for details.
+
Hotels across the street from the fest include the Marriott and Hotel 50. Both are over $150 / night. The Hilton Hotel (6 blocks away) may be willing to bargain if you arrive without reservations and they have empty rooms.
