1:30–7 pm "MARIACHI DE UCLATLAN 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION / MARIACHI CONFERENCE" presented by the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Department of Ethnomusicology, in the Schoenberg Music Building on the UCLA Campus in Westwood.

Conference guest speakers include Daniel Sheehy, director of Smithsonian Folkways and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage; Mark Fogelquist, mariachi educator; Jonathan Clark, mariachi historian; Russell Rodriguez, mariachi historian.

Mariachi de Uclatlán began in the 1960s, making it one of the first mariachi groups to be formed in an academic university setting. During this time, the UCLA Ethnomusicology Department granted academic space for ethnomusicologists who researched jarocho and mariachi music to form a mariachi ensemble. The group developed as a way to explore the Mexican culture outside the borders of Mexico.

The current Mariachi de Uclatlán was revived in 2006 through the collaborative efforts of Mary Alfaro, Lauryn Salazar and Leticia Soto. The three teamed-up with other talented mariachi musicians at UCLA to restore the campus group.

The Long Run is regarded as the finest Eagles tribute band in the country with their lush harmonies and rich instrumental arrangements, replicating the sound that made The Eagles an unforgettable part of rock history. 10 am-10 pm 42nd Annual "NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL" sprawlingly inhabits Seattle Center, the preserved World's Fair site, on more than two dozen stages, indoors and out. There's dances, jamming, food, and delightful music, and while they will give you a unique daily festival button in return for a donation each day, it is all FREE. (Until the rise of San Francisco's "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass," this was, for decades, the biggest free music event in North America.)

This is QUITE an event, with tasty and authentic food of the British Isles, plenty of Celtic music, piping and pipe band competitions, Highland Dance, and Scottish Heavy Athletic Games wherein both men and women compete, throwing astonishingly large and heavy objects and defying all sensibility.

FESTIVAL, in Topanga:
10 am-7 pm  40th Annual "TOPANGA DAYS" Festival brings an enormous amount of live music, tasty food and lots of fun, for three days at the Topanga Community House & Fairgrounds in Topanga Canyon. A free shuttle bus roams the canyon to get you there from wherever you can park. It's the best-organized happy hippie happening anywhere, and it' s all-ages (with children's activities).

They even have a colorful parade on Memorial Day (Monday) at 9 am. Be aware that the CHP closes the road at 8:30 am Monday for it, and you'll be left sitting in your car for two hours Monday morning if you're not already in the canyon and parked to watch the parade.

A dynamic and entertaining Kiwi artist, he combines all the elements of modern fingerstyle guitar into his original tunes and arrangements of popular songs. Venue impresario Bob Stane gushes, "He puts the pop in Pop, the jazz in Jazz, the rock in Rock and blue in Blues all on 6 strings."

Before moving to the U.S. in 2011, Brett performed the festival circuit throughout New Zealand and Australia, both as a soloist and bandleader, and backed-up many iconic New Zealand artists. He wrote music for documentaries and even a musical.

Within his style, he combines bass lines, melodies, chords, slapping, two-handed tapping, odd times, and improvisation all in the context of songs. Stylistically, think "Eric Clapton meeting Tommy Emmanuel, then talking to Dave Matthews," says Bob. Tix (matinee) $15.

The YOUNG DUBLINERS are quite possibly "Celtic Rock's" hardest working band, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans across the US and Europe every year.

In recent years, the Young Dubliners have twice appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," had songs featured in the TV shows "Sons of Anarchy" and "Human Target," and toured extensively as headliners and as openers for a diverse list of artists, including The Flaming Lips, Collective Soul, Jethro Tull, Johnny Lang, and many more.

Although the band's sound is most commonly called "Celtic Rock," that label, as labels often can be, is misleading.
+
The Irish influence is there, certainly, but it's not the only influence that rears its head on their albums, or in live shows. "That was always the idea", Keith Roberts, lead singer for the band explains. He adds, "The sound was always intended to be a hybrid because we all come from different backgrounds. Even though two of us are from Ireland, a lot of the music we listened to growing up wasn't Irish at all, but when we got here, we got homesick and developed a new appreciation for Irish Music.”

Opening act plays 6-6:45 pm, marking the return of the dynamite Santa Barbara indie band THE INDIAN TRADING FURS. The event promo says , “Sounds like … Mumford & Sons thrown into a circle pit. Breakneck guitar parts, whip-like drum fills, fearless banjo and soaring vocals have helped move this trio from local street corners to a nine state tour and a new album in the works.”

Potluck dinner is optional -- come early (gates at 5 pm) and bring a dish to share in the picnic with friends, family and the band , on the grass under the oaks. They supply the cups, plates, juice, coffee & water, but it’s BYOB.

Bring a low-back deck chair, a blanket and a small flashlight to help find your vehicle after the show. The evening gets cool -- there's a bonfire at the break -- but bring a jacket or extra blanket for the second half. Friendly, well behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

ANNE HILLS has become one of the better-known voices of the contemporary folk music scene, receiving awards and recognition for her live performances (2009 "Bound for Glory" live radio show favorite, Ithaca, NY), her unique solo and collaborative recording projects (2001 WAMMIE for a duet CD with Tom Paxton, titled "Under American Skies"), and her overall artistry and benefit work (2002 "Kate Wolf Award," "Carole Robertson Award," and "Kerrville Female Vocalist of the Year" 1997). Her song "Follow That Road" was the title cut of the "Martha's Vineyard Songwriter Retreat" and has enchanted audiences for over a decade.

Taj Mahal is a Grammy Award winning American blues musician. A self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and many other instruments, Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of his ongoing blues career by fusing sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.

Taj Mahal, his stage name, came to him in dreams about Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using it in 1959 or 1961— that's somehow become unclear, even to him — he adopted it while attending the University of Massachusetts. During this time he worked with The Rolling Stones, including performing with them in the film, "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus."

In 1997, he won a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Blues Album" for his "Señor Blues," followed by another Grammy for "Shoutin' in Key" in 2000.

Pete Henry and Jeff Omidvaran attended the Coachella Music Festival in 2012, where they decided the time had come to combine their passions and creativity to form a band that would eventually become HIYA!

Jeff, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, started playing guitar at age 12 and followed his artistic desires to California. Pete, too, picked up the guitar in his pre-teens and aggressively pursued his love of the instrument through the Music program at UC Irvine.

Ashley Nguyen, having collaborated with Pete in a prior ensemble, was brought on board to sharpen the trio with a unique sensibility and vibrant vocal character. MICHAEL KEALE has been entertaining audiences throughout Hawaii and the Mainland U.S. with his own special brand of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music, American standards, and Jazz. Michael's velvety smooth vocals and soothing melodies share the "Spirit of Aloha."

Michael and friends present a wonderful evening of music, hula, and storytelling. He uses ukulele and guitars with both regular and slack-key tunings. As he asks in Hawai'ian Creole English (aka Pidgin), "Whatchu waiting fo' ?"

In his own way, Michael’s uncle, Moe Keale, was saying, “The world needs to hear the gift of your voice and experience your aloha." The words still ring in Michael's ears to this day. But until recently, Michael never looked upon those qualities as gifts; singing with his heart was just something that he had always done.

Two of Michael’s cousins, Skippy and the late Israel (‘Iz’) Kamakawiwo‘ole, joined to form the M'KAHA SONS OF NI'IHAU, one of the most beloved groups of their generation. ‘Iz’ eventually set-out on his own and became a phenomenon with songs like "Over the Rainbow" and "White Sandy Beach." Michael keeps his cousin Iz’s memory alive by performing his songs everywhere he goes.

Michael’s debut album, "Remember," was released in July, 2010. Featuring Michael’s crooning and silken bass vocals, "Remember" received positive response from fans for its mix of music from Hawai‘i’s past and present. Garrison Keillor has been the host and writer of "A Prairie Home Companion" since the program started production in 1974. He has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In addition to radio's weekly PHC, Keillor hosts the daily program, "The Writer's Almanac."

His many books include "Lake Wobegon Days," "The Book of Guys," "Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance," and his latest, "Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny" (Viking).

He is the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, "Good Poems: American Places" (Viking).
