LATE ADDITION...
Sun, May 26, at UCLA:
1:30–7 pm "MARIACHI DE UCLATLAN 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION / MARIACHI CONFERENCE" presented by the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Department of Ethnomusicology, in the Schoenberg Music Building on the UCLA Campus in Westwood.
+
Conference guest speakers include Daniel Sheehy, director of Smithsonian Folkways and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage; Mark Fogelquist, mariachi educator; Jonathan Clark, mariachi historian; Russell Rodriguez, mariachi historian.
+
Mariachi de Uclatlán began in the 1960s, making it one of the first mariachi groups to be formed in an academic university setting. During this time, the UCLA Ethnomusicology Department granted academic space for ethnomusicologists who researched jarocho and mariachi music to form a mariachi ensemble. The group developed as a way to explore the Mexican culture outside the borders of Mexico.
+
The current Mariachi de Uclatlán was revived in 2006 through the collaborative efforts of Mary Alfaro, Lauryn Salazar and Leticia Soto. The three teamed-up with other talented mariachi musicians at UCLA to restore the campus group.

+
A dynamic and entertaining Kiwi artist, he combines all the elements of modern fingerstyle guitar into his original tunes and arrangements of popular songs. Venue impresario Bob Stane gushes, "He puts the pop in Pop, the jazz in Jazz, the rock in Rock and blue in Blues all on 6 strings."
+
Before moving to the U.S. in 2011, Brett performed the festival circuit throughout New Zealand and Australia, both as a soloist and bandleader, and backed-up many iconic New Zealand artists. He wrote music for documentaries and even a musical.
+
Within his style, he combines bass lines, melodies, chords, slapping, two-handed tapping, odd times, and improvisation all in the context of songs. Stylistically, think "Eric Clapton meeting Tommy Emmanuel, then talking to Dave Matthews," says Bob. Tix (matinee) $15.

Sat, May 25, near Lake Casitas:
6 pm YOUNG DUBLINERS, plus an opening set by THE INDIAN TRADING FURS, kick-off this year's "DANCING OAK RANCH SUMMER CONCERT SERIES," located in a wooded canyon on Hwy 150, a few miles from Lake Casitas.
+
The summer series returns for its 6th year with more delightfully delicious live acoustic music and the rousing, energetic and exciting Young Dubliners performing their passionate and universally popular Celtic / Celtic rock classics and catchy original tunes.
+
Gates open at 5 pm for claiming your spot and pre-concert potluck. Opening act at 6, YOUNG DUBLINERS play at 7 pm.
+
The YOUNG DUBLINERS are quite possibly "Celtic Rock's" hardest working band, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans across the US and Europe every year.
+
In recent years, the Young Dubliners have twice appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," had songs featured in the TV shows "Sons of Anarchy" and "Human Target," and toured extensively as headliners and as openers for a diverse list of artists, including The Flaming Lips, Collective Soul, Jethro Tull, Johnny Lang, and many more.
+
Although the band's sound is most commonly called "Celtic Rock," that label, as labels often can be, is misleading.
+
The Irish influence is there, certainly, but it's not the only influence that rears its head on their albums, or in live shows. "That was always the idea", Keith Roberts, lead singer for the band explains. He adds, "The sound was always intended to be a hybrid because we all come from different backgrounds. Even though two of us are from Ireland, a lot of the music we listened to growing up wasn't Irish at all, but when we got here, we got homesick and developed a new appreciation for Irish Music.”
+
Opening act plays 6-6:45 pm, marking the return of the dynamite Santa Barbara indie band THE INDIAN TRADING FURS. The event promo says , “Sounds like … Mumford & Sons thrown into a circle pit. Breakneck guitar parts, whip-like drum fills, fearless banjo and soaring vocals have helped move this trio from local street corners to a nine state tour and a new album in the works.”
+
Potluck dinner is optional -- come early (gates at 5 pm) and bring a dish to share in the picnic with friends, family and the band , on the grass under the oaks. They supply the cups, plates, juice, coffee & water, but it’s BYOB.
+
Bring a low-back deck chair, a blanket and a small flashlight to help find your vehicle after the show. The evening gets cool -- there's a bonfire at the break -- but bring a jacket or extra blanket for the second half. Friendly, well behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.
+
Tix $20 in advance or at the gate, and kids under age 15 are free. Questions? Contact Shane at 805-665-8852 or shane@ojaiconcertseries.com.

Sat, May 25, in Altadena:
7 pm ANNE HILLS, a true folk star, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations (10 am-10 pm) 626-798-6236; info, www.coffeegallery.com/showsat.htm.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Not to be missed. Up there with the biggest acts. Those who know will be here to celebrate her on our stage."
+
ANNE HILLS has become one of the better-known voices of the contemporary folk music scene, receiving awards and recognition for her live performances (2009 "Bound for Glory" live radio show favorite, Ithaca, NY), her unique solo and collaborative recording projects (2001 WAMMIE for a duet CD with Tom Paxton, titled "Under American Skies"), and her overall artistry and benefit work (2002 "Kate Wolf Award," "Carole Robertson Award," and "Kerrville Female Vocalist of the Year" 1997). Her song "Follow That Road" was the title cut of the "Martha's Vineyard Songwriter Retreat" and has enchanted audiences for over a decade.
+
Whether she is singing her own song, or one she set to the words of 6 year old Opal Whiteley, or to those of the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley; whether accompanied with her guitar, banjo, or simply a Tibetan bell; she puts her whole heart and soul into the moment.
+
She's just begun touring California recently, winning over audiences with her warm, lively and humorous performances. If you haven't become familiar with her voice -- featured often on XM/Sirius Folk Radio, "The Midnight Special," and many other folk shows, you'll want to hear her songs and stories in person.
+
The AllMusic Guide says, "A stunning soprano tone has made Anne Hills one of contemporary music’s premiere vocalists. . . Her knack for writing heartfelt songs [has] brought her to the upper echelon of her craft.”
+
Tom Paxton says, "Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept-up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne’s writing, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others, is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.”

Mon, May 27, FESTIVAL, in Nashville:
10 am-6 pm Annual "MUSIC CITY BLUES SPRING FESTIVAL" in Centennial Park Band Shell, West End Av at 25th Av South, Nashville, TN.
+
Headliner is TAJ MAHAL, blues giant who played with the Rolling Stones, wrote film score for the Cicely Tyson Movie, "Sounder." + Organizers expect record attendance at this FREE festival.
+
Taj Mahal is a Grammy Award winning American blues musician. A self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and many other instruments, Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of his ongoing blues career by fusing sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.
+
Taj Mahal, his stage name, came to him in dreams about Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using it in 1959 or 1961— that's somehow become unclear, even to him — he adopted it while attending the University of Massachusetts. During this time he worked with The Rolling Stones, including performing with them in the film, "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus."
+
In 1997, he won a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Blues Album" for his "Señor Blues," followed by another Grammy for "Shoutin' in Key" in 2000.
+
Taj Mahal has said he prefers outdoor performances, noting, "The music was designed for people to move. That's why I like to play outdoor festivals -- because people will just dance.”

Mon, May 27, in Burbank:
8:30 pm TROY WALKER, the Sunset Strip / Palomino rockabilly / honky-tonk legend, plus special guests, and BIG MIKE & BLUES DELUXX, for a special Memorial Day show at Viva Cantina, 900 W Riverside Dr, Burbank; info, www.vivacantina.com or 818-848-8810. Dinner reservations, 818-845-2425.
+
Viva joyously welcomes back TROY WALKER, the hyper-flamboyant, ultra-talented song stylist whose wicked humor, show-stopping presentation and gale-force lungpower first immolated Sunset Strip lounges fifty years ago. Walker’s passion, involvement and flawless execution are as indisputably arresting as ever, and still soar to the out-of-this-world level that won him such fans as Elvis Presley, Louella Parsons, Ethel Merman, Mae West, and (believe it or not), Ronald Reagan.
+
Expect nothing less than a high-voltage dose of cut-above country, soul and rock & roll kicks from this brilliant, ribald, one of a kind entertainer. As journalist Todd Everett said, "I took a friend from out of town to see Troy Walker at Viva Cantina. Didn't really tell her what to expect, other than that she's never seen anything like it, and I admitted that it's difficult to 'explain' Troy. The next morning, I sort of figured it out: a cross between Wayne Newton and Rip Taylor. That or what I first told my friend: 'the greatest entertainer in the history of show business.'"

Tue, May 28, CD RELEASE SHOW, Live in L.A., plus on TV:
8:30 pm JOHN FOGERTY plays a special, short-notice and one-night-only "Album Release & Birthday Bash" show at the El Rey in L.A.
+
The show celebrates the same-day release of his much-anticipated new album "Wrote a Song for Everyone." Plus, May 28 is also the birthday of the Grammy Award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
+
A limited amount of pre-sale tickets for this intimate show became available Tuesday, May 14 to members of FOGERTY’s fan club via his website, www.johnfogerty.com.
+
The show will be filmed and broadcast live on AXS TV.
+
The new album, on Vanguard Records, is a celebration of the iconic songbook of one of rock’s most important artists. John Fogerty is a national treasure who’s sold over 100 million albums. Produced by the artist himself, who is no stranger to the most intricate layering and nuances of music and sound, the album is a collection of 12 classics and deep tracks from his CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL and solo material, plus two brand new solo songs.
+
All the classic tracks from his remarkable canon of hits were recorded this time around in collaboration with today’s biggest stars from the country, pop and rock worlds. This is Fogerty's ninth studio solo album since disbanding Creedence Clearwater Revival.
+
Mixed by Bob Clearmountain, it was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville -- except for one special location --"Proud Mary" was recorded in New Orleans with Allen Toussaint and the Rebirth Brass Band.
+
FOGERTY recorded “Fortunate Son” with Foo Fighters at their 606 Studio using "the" legendary Neve recording console featured in the #1 iTunes documentary, "Sound City."
+
Of course, there are tales to be told about each track. (We only wonder why he chose to include the abominable Kid Rock in such a fine project.)
+
If you want to watch live on TV: AXS TV is broadcast on DIRECTV Channel 340, DISH Network Channel 167, AT&T U-Verse Channel 1106, and Verizon FiOS Channel 569. For additional affiliate and distributor channel information, including Comcast Xfinity, Charter, Suddenlink and others, check www.axs.tv/subscribe.

Bob Stane calls them, "A gutsy act working without a net." He adds, "Together, this group of four have synergized technology with acoustic instruments and a message for 'The Dream Generation' about fearlessness, drive, and life without regret. This Urban Folk band is at the beginning of their journey, and they appear to have created a new, intricate and structured sound. They are progressive and willing to take on the world, forever learning, growing, and perfecting their craft. Beneath the flannels, hoodies, and mystique are four wildly educated and talented musicians steamrolling their dreams."
+
Pete Henry and Jeff Omidvaran attended the Coachella Music Festival in 2012, where they decided the time had come to combine their passions and creativity to form a band that would eventually become HIYA!
+
Jeff, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, started playing guitar at age 12 and followed his artistic desires to California. Pete, too, picked up the guitar in his pre-teens and aggressively pursued his love of the instrument through the Music program at UC Irvine.
+
Ashley Nguyen, having collaborated with Pete in a prior ensemble, was brought on board to sharpen the trio with a unique sensibility and vibrant vocal character. Gerry, the savvy percussionist of the band, filled in nicely, allowing the group's music to really take shape and move the spirit. Ashley hails from the San Francisco Bay Area as a passionate music lover and singer. Gerry carries the percussive rhythm, effectively rounding-off the unique diversity of this self-proclaimed "Urban Folk" band. Tix, $15.

Thu, May 30, in Altadena:
8 pm MICHAEL KEALE & FRIENDS bring his Hawai'ian musical royalty, ukulele, slack key guitar, song, hula, and storytelling, for "all the things that make Hawai'ian music popular," at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations (10 am-10 pm) 626-798-6236; info, www.coffeegallery.com/showsat.htm.
+
His Uncle MOE KEALE, and cousin ISRAEL "IZ" KAMAKAWIWO'OLE are ultra-famous names in Hawai'ian music.
+
MICHAEL KEALE has been entertaining audiences throughout Hawaii and the Mainland U.S. with his own special brand of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music, American standards, and Jazz. Michael's velvety smooth vocals and soothing melodies share the "Spirit of Aloha."
+
Michael and friends present a wonderful evening of music, hula, and storytelling. He uses ukulele and guitars with both regular and slack-key tunings. As he asks in Hawai'ian Creole English (aka Pidgin), "Whatchu waiting fo' ?"
+
In his own way, Michael’s uncle, Moe Keale, was saying, “The world needs to hear the gift of your voice and experience your aloha." The words still ring in Michael's ears to this day. But until recently, Michael never looked upon those qualities as gifts; singing with his heart was just something that he had always done.
+
Two of Michael’s cousins, Skippy and the late Israel (‘Iz’) Kamakawiwo‘ole, joined to form the M'KAHA SONS OF NI'IHAU, one of the most beloved groups of their generation. ‘Iz’ eventually set-out on his own and became a phenomenon with songs like "Over the Rainbow" and "White Sandy Beach." Michael keeps his cousin Iz’s memory alive by performing his songs everywhere he goes.
+
Michael’s debut album, "Remember," was released in July, 2010. Featuring Michael’s crooning and silken bass vocals, "Remember" received positive response from fans for its mix of music from Hawai‘i’s past and present. Songs like “‘Ahulili”, and “Kamalani O Keaukaha,” as well as traditional English standards such as “Waik’k?” and “The Way You Look Tonight,” earned Michael two prestigious "N’ H’k? Hanohano Award" nominations in 2011 for “Island Album of the Year” and “Most Promising Artist.”
+
Michael has entertained at Waik’k's Royal Hawaiian Hotel and at the Moana on the Terrace Stage, where Aunty Genoa Keawe herself entertained people from all over the world. (The Moana was the first hotel on Waikiki Beach, built in 1901, and the Guide recently ran a feature story on an aspect of its unique musical heritage -- John Phillip Sousa and Bill Tapia -- and it's still available in the sidebar, at left.)
+
There's more about Michael on his website, www.mikeale.com.  You can find copies of his CD, "Remember," for purchase at Amazon.com, iTunes, on his site -- or at the show, where he will sign them for you. Tix, $20.

Fri, Jun 7, in L.A. (Griffith Park):
7:30 pm "A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION" live at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Av, L.A.
+
Each year, Garrison Keillor uproots his Minnesota-based radio program and its colorful cast of musical characters and takes the show on the road.  They land in Los Angeles for one show at The Greek Theatre.
+
As always, special guests join the regular cast. Announced so far are LILY TOMLIN, PAULA POUNDSTONE, and JEARLYN & JEVETTA STEELE.
+
Now, why would any of those eminently practical (not to mention notoriously frugal) Minnesota Norwegian Lutherans think of buying a ticket for something that's free on the radio? And, when you see the ticket prices, you may be scared away. But not so fast. Persistent rumors that host Garrison Keillor may really be retiring soon could make this your last chance to see the show live.
+
Currently in its 39th season, "A Prairie Home Companion" has made the fictional small town of Lake Wobegon part of American popular culture. The show is broadcast on more than 600 public radio stations nationwide, with a weekly audience of nearly 4 million listeners. The program is also heard on the American Forces Network Europe, the Far East Network, and in dozens of European cities via the Astra satellite network.
+
Garrison Keillor has been the host and writer of "A Prairie Home Companion" since the program started production in 1974. He has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
+
In addition to radio's weekly PHC, Keillor hosts the daily program, "The Writer's Almanac."
+
His many books include "Lake Wobegon Days," "The Book of Guys," "Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance," and his latest, "Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny" (Viking).
+
He is the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, "Good Poems: American Places" (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman. In 2007, he opened an independent bookstore, Common Good Books, in St. Paul, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
+
"A Prairie Home Companion" is produced by Prairie Home Productions and presented by American Public Media. The show is sponsored nationally by Allianz and by Ford. Audio clips, scripts and more information on "A Prairie Home Companion" can be found online at www.prairiehome.org.

Tix, $46-$99 at the Greek's box office, or those prices plus the usual exorbitant "processing charge" at http://m.ticketmaster.com/event/09004A5A92FC4233?artistid=835597&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=2&brand=greektheatre&camefrom=cfc_ndrcon_grk_May22.

Perfect cure for not being at Kerrville is doing festivals here. Weather here is probably way better. Always hot and steamy there.

We always do Long Beach Bayou. Thinking of Simi Cajun Blues instead (never been). Any advice?

- Larry, the editor said...

Well, yeah. Try something new. You're sure to like both, if you like either one. They ARE different. LB Bayou has water, Simi is inland, but they craft a whole little world for the Simi fest. The Blues Stage at Simi is much nicer, on par with the Cajun-zydeco stage. LB Bayou usually has more Louisiana acts. Both have top acts. Try the one you haven't tried and next year you'll budget for both. And for LB Crawfish (July).

Prairie Home [Greek Theatre] is just too pricy. For that much, I can do three other good concerts.
