Mid-Week Music, Nov 7 & 8, 2012

.
LATE ADDITIONS FOR THURSDAY...
.
Coupla movies-on-TV listings for Thursday night, and early Friday morning Music-on-TV listings; don't worry, everything else follows right here, same edition.
.
+=+
.
Thu, Nov 8, on TV:
6:45-8:45 pm "TOP HAT" (1935) is an early film musical with FRED ASTAIRE and GINGER ROGERS. Read the note, two listings down, for why these films remain relevant, beyond the fun of watching them. It's on Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
.
+=+
.
Thu, Nov 8, on TV:
8:45-11 pm "NETWORK" (1976) is not a musical, nor a film known for music. But the landmark film still has plenty that's scathing (couched in satiric and ironic humor) about how media is used and abused and how all of us buy into it. Especially relevant right after the most expensive election in history. Earned Oscars for PETER FINCH, FAYE DUNAWAY, BEATRICE STRAIGHT, and writer PADDY CHAYEFSKY. If you don't watch it, you'll never understand when somebody is "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore."The It's on TCM.
.
+=+
.
EARLY Fri, Nov 9, on TV:
6:45-9 am "ZIEGFELD GIRL" (1941) sparkles with BUSBY BERKELEY songs and dances, starring JUDY GARLAND and LANA TURNER. If your band is always looking for music of that period -- or if you write in the style of that time -- check it out for inspiration. On TCM.
.
+=+
.
Fri, Nov 9, on TV:
11 am-noon EMMYLOU HARRIS and MUMFORD & SONS perform on a 2012 episode of "CROSSROADS. Repeats Sun, 1-2 pm. On Palladia, cable or satellite.

Their ordered lives are transformed, raising questions for all of us in that regard, as the characters wrestle with whether a marriage can endure a monumental change. It’s a world premiere, written by Kathryn Walat and directed by Michael Michetti, and it’s getting rave but thoughtful reviews, even an Ovation Award recommendation. Tix are discounted $10 with code CELLO. Otherwise, they’re $34 general, $29 students and seniors for the rest of the run. So use the discount code!

(“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
Of all the voices –and man, they seem to issue them at birth to Swedish women –Talvik has the most faith in hers in an “I don’t need a theatrical gimmick” kind of way.” - Austin Chronicle.
+
Sofia is a well established artist in Sweden and has played at several festivals in the US including The Lollapaloozaand SXSW. In December 2011 she started out a two year long tour throughout America and has since played a bunch of official showcases at The Folk Alliance International Conference in Memphis, TN,8 smashing concerts at SXSW in Austin,TX, and in total over 200 gigs since the tour started 10 months ago. In January she released her 5th album "The Owls Are Not What They Seem" and it has inhabited Bandcamp’s “toplist” for “Most sold folk album” in recent weeks. Sofia's new “Daytrotter” session was released September 21 on http://daytrotter.com.
+
Sofia appeared live on the NBC TV show Mass Appeal on WWLP-22News in June, and on KEYC TV FOX NEWS in August and have recently appeared on a number of radio shows and in many newspapers around the MidWest where she's been touring recently (check out her latest press at http://www.sofiatalvik.com/category/reviews/).
+
Sofia Talvik is a singer-songwriter who combines modal chord changes and beautiful airy production with the gentle singing of a 70's folk songstress. Her music will make you think of Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Belle & Sebastian and Aimee Mann. Her tour is called "Drivin' & Dreaming" as she's touring in an old RV that she bought in Florida and which will be her home for the tour. Unlike her previous US tours this tour is all about playing her way through the US, visiting small towns as well as big towns.
+
"No town is too small as long as there's people there who want to hear my music" Talvik says. "A lot of European artists only play in the big cities when they come to the US because that's what looks cool on their tour history but I'm all about the grass root approach and about meeting the real people of America."

Glad to see we are back to reporting on music here.

I too am glad this reports on music. I wanted to say that because the person who posted made it sound a bit snarky. Like stick to the music without actually saying that. So taking thethe opportunity, I always find good interesting things here. I have seen dozens of performances and festivals I would never have known about if not for this. I cannot imagine how you find all these things to share!!! And when you decided to educate people on prop 37 (tragic it did not pass) I was glad you tried.
