MEMORIES OF NOV 22nd, 1963...

The Guide wishes to share reminiscences we have received from those who remember where they were on November 22nd, 1963:

* * *

Robert Reich, Prof. of Economics at UC Berkeley, and US Secretary of Labor during the Clinton administration:

"I was a high school senior grappling with wave theory in physics class when the announcement came over the school PA system, fifty years ago this morning. We were sent home early, our teachers trying to be reassuring but with tears streaming down their faces. For my generation as for much of America, his assassination was our loss of innocence."

* * *

Robert Morgan Fisher, musician / recording artist / voice actor / writer / writing teacher:

"When I was about a year old, sitting on my father's shoulders in Austin, Texas, JFK reached out and shook my hand. That's only one reason this fantastic song by Peter David Case means so much to me."

Stacey Earle, musician / recording artist:

"On this day, November 22 in 1963, I was at home with my sister and mom watching tv when the report from Walter Cronkite came in while watching the noon news .

"We lived in San Antonio TX. Our Dad worked as a air traffic controller at the San Antonio airport.

"The day before, on the 21st, before president Kennedy was assassinated, Mom took all 5 of us kids to the airport in San Antonio to see the president. Dad was already there because he was working that day, but he was able to leave the tower because the airport was closed to flights one hour before and one hour after the president's arrival or departure .

"Dad first took us all where we watched them arrive on the air force one from the observation deck with all the other people .

"But after a moment Dad told us all to come on and moved us all quickly through the airport down to baggage claim and thru and back door outside and that's where the car was right beside a fence.

"Dad knew that's where the car would be and there we were, right up close as the President and First Lady got in to the car .

"There we were, right up by the car . Mom, Dad and 5 noses and lots of fingers clutching to the fence.

"Thank you Dad for all the amazing adventures.

"Sometime I will tell y'all how we ended up in the middle of the LBJ ranch on a Sunday drive."

John Mollenhauer, musician / recording artist:

"50 years ago today I was home 'sick' from school, and watching TV. (Black & white of course.) It was one of those 'illnesses' that seemed to miraculously disappear as soon as it was too late to actually GO to school. I saw the news report. Even at that age I knew this was very serious. My father was out in the yard, mowing the lawn, with a manual lawnmower. He was hot and sweaty and tired, and not in the mood for any of my childish games. I yelled to him, 'DAD! DAD! The PRESIDENT's been SHOT!'

"He looked very exasperated but came over to me to see what I was yelling about. 'THEY shot the president!' I said.

"He said, 'John, I'm very busy right now, I don't have time to play until later.'

"'I'm not playing dad! I just saw it on TV! On the news!'

"He paused and looked at me for a moment in disbelief. 'You're telling me that they just said on the news that President Kennedy, the president of the United States has been shot?'

"'YES!'

"He then RAN into the house to the TV. I don't think I'd ever seen him run before. He sat there glued to the TV absolutely stunned, and speechless. I was only 9, but I knew that something terrible, something historic and life-altering had just happened."

* * *

Emily Sanders, musician:

"This is one of my favorite quotes by JFK...Thinking of him this week, on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

"My high school in Maryland was named after him - a fitting tribute for a president who was passionate about education.

"One of my earliest memories was visiting JFK's grave at Arlington National Cemetery right after the flame was installed, but not finished. There were mounds of flowers that people had left from their gardens and a solemn procession of people paying their respects. I will never forget it."

[JFK, from that undelivered speech:]

'Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.' - John F. Kennedy.

* * *

Marc Platt, musician / recording artist /  songwriting teacher:

"The JFK Motorcade was just about to hop on the Stemmons Freeway. It was literally done when the shots were fired that changed the trajectory of history in 1963.

"I was only 2-1/2-years old, but I later became obsessed with that assassination. I even helped a professor at San Diego State with research on the subject for a book he was writing. I have gradually toned down my conspiracy theory ideology. I believe Oswald was a shooter, but I still believe there was a second gunman maybe on the same floor at the Texas Schoolbook Depository.

"I just can't fathom the fact that the FBI and CIA had tracked this guy to and from Russia. This dude (Oswald) was only 24-years-old and had a mile-long list of political activity.

"To think JFK was taken out by a $12.88 rifle baffles the mind."
