YOU ARE INVITED TO A FEAST TO SHARE WHAT EMBODIES THANKSGIVING
Thursday, November 28, in Venice:
11 am-2 pm “Serving at noon” 9th Annual “THANKSGIVING POTLUCK AT THE LEARNING GARDEN” is a truly meaningful event, as members of the community host and honor the clients and staff of “The Program for Torture Victims,” Los Angeles, and all are welcome to partake of the feast, at The Learning Garden, on the grounds of Venice High School at the intersection of Venice Bl & Walgrove Av, Venice; entrance is the first gate on Walgrove.
+
The Friends of The Learning Garden, the Board of Directors and staff invite you to come honor our guests for Thanksgiving in this 9th year of sharing with The Program for Torture Victims, Los Angeles. (www.ptvla.org). These folks have sought asylum in the United States, and PTV works on their behalf to settle them here and make their transition to America as smooth as possible. Gardenmaster David King says, “We celebrate their new lives and show them the tradition of Thanksgiving.”
+
He continues, “We have turkey and potatoes. Bring any other favorite dish to serve about 12. If you can bring your own plate and service ware you can help us be a zero-waste event. No cover charge.”
+
The Guide has participated several times. If you feel alone on Thanksgiving, we strongly encourage to bring an edible contribution and take part. You will find yourself among people who are TRULY grateful to be there, to be here in a nation where they are not persecuted and tortured for their beliefs. In turn, you will acquire a whole new perspective on the meaning of Thanks-giving.

LET’S STARVE THE GRINCH WHO STOLE THANKSGIVING
It's an outrage. Thanksgiving is being erased by corporate greed and disregard for the dedicated (and usually underpaid) employees who keep the fat cats in the 1%. It’s pathetic, and literally true.
Most big retailers are changing long-standing policies and will be open long hours on Thanksgiving. Walmart – the monolithic hegemonist that has no regard for its employees all year, anyway -- is being joined by K-Mart, which, disgracefully, will open its stores at 6 am Thanksgiving morning. Those are stores we will not enter from now through the end of the year, and we call upon you to do the same.
We support REI, Patagonia, Nordstrom, Burlington Coat Factory, American Girl, and Costco, all of whom are closed on Thanksgiving to provide traditional holiday time for their employees to spend with loved ones. Those are places we will do holiday gift shopping.
Last year, Radio Shack stole Thanksgiving from its employees. And their stores did no business on the holiday. This year, amidst their corporate big shots’ high fallutin' rhetoric about the sanctity of families enjoying Thanksgiving together, Radio Shack stores will be closed.
Using that example, let’s assist all the greedy Grinches to fail. Cross them off your list of places to find holiday gifts. Shop elsewhere. Support small businesses on “Small Business Saturday,” November 30th. Reclaim Thanksgiving for the beleaguered employees of the unfeeling, greed-obsessed megagiants. Let’s join in a boycott of all corporate retail chains that are open on Thanksgiving. They’re the real turkeys who care only about gobbling-up your money. Let’s give them indigestion.

Jerry and friends take a musical journey leading from familiar pop songs of the late ’50s to an exploration of his folk roots and experiences as the surviving co-founder of WE FIVE, the group that had a million-selling hit record with “You Were On My Mind.” Along the way, he informs the audience about pockets of American heritage that are often overlooked, forgotten, or never really known.

The sets are laced with a fabric woven from the spirit of Woody Guthrie, John & Alan Lomax, and Pete Seeger and the Weavers, to the more contemporary artists they inspired when Jerry was coming of age. That was in the mid-sixties, under the mentoring eye of John Stewart — No, not the comedic TV host, but the Kingston Trio banjo player and writer of countless classic songs including “Runaway Train,” “Gold,” and “Daydream Believer,” as well as an early pioneer of the musical form that’s come to be called Americana.

Rebecca began clogging as a child in Cordele, Georgia, as part of the community mountain-style clogging group The Dixieland Cloggers. She went on to spend the next three decades developing and fine-tuning her unique "Tennessee Shuffle" style of free-form flatfoot and buck dance, inspired by friends, relations, masters and mentors throughout Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia. "There was never a question that I would sing and dance," says Rebecca. "In my family, it was about the same as breathing air or drinking water."

Cost $30 person, includes light refreshments. Rebecca says, “Spaces are limited, don't you dawdle now ya hear.”

Kevin Burton Smith, Butler’s “Coffee Music Guy,” outdid himself with the descriptions of tonight’s acts. Here ya go:
+
Emma and Ellie are BRIGHTSIDE OF BLUE, two swinging and multi-talented sisters from Valencia who play a multitude of instruments while swapping vocals back and forth like Betty and Veronica time-share dating Archie, singing a captivating and crowd-pleasing blend of covers and originals, and maybe a few holiday nuggets.
+
Then it's the wild Gypsy bop / pop hobo boho / Broadway cosmic / marching band stomp and shimmy of THE COSMOPOLITES, whose music is about as easy to pin down as a scared congressman's stand on almost anything. This eclectic and ever-elastic band of uber-talented tomcats offer a Day-Glo kaleidoscope of musical shadings that seem to know no boundaries. With trumpet. Colour us impressed.
+
Kevin concludes, “It's just gonna be a great evening. Plus, it's Small Business Saturday, and BUTLER'S COFFEE is -- you guessed it -- a small business. Organizers tell us, “Four years ago a few of us decided to challenge ourselves and songwriter friends to write brand new holiday songs, and ‘The Original Holiday Song Show’ was born. This year on Sunday, December 1 at 8pm, host Bill Boyd and the Cinema Bar will kick of the holiday season and present new songs by some of this town’s most talented songwriters.”
+
They continue, “All money raised from the bar and the tip jar will go to the ‘Fight for Finny Foundation’ to help our good friend and favorite bartender, Finny. Finny is going through radiation treatment as he faces his second outbreak of Lymphoma and has not been able to work since May. His doctors are hopeful that another dose of healthy cells from his original bone marrow donor will aid him in getting stronger and healthier and also help to avoid surgery. Your contributions will help with these treatments, so come and have a drink and put some money or gift card in the tip jar for Finny!”
