SEVEN SCORE AND TEN: THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS
.
Tue, Nov 19, in history and on TV:
Today is the 150th anniversary of the day Abraham Lincoln delivered the "Gettysburg Address," the seminal speech of American history.
PBS has a new show, "Lincoln@Getttsburg" that premieres tonight. It explores now Lincoln's embrace of the new technology of the telegraph influenced him to keep his speech to an unprecedented short length for the time -- just 272 words. It airs at 9 pm on PBS OC in L.A.
Over on the Military Channel, they're re-airing the 2008 doc, "Gettysburg: Three Days that Changed America," about the pivotal battle of the Civil War. (At 7 & 10 pm, Pacific.)
Of course, there are a lot of specials airing all week on the presidency of John F. Kennedy, which ended in sudden violent tragedy 50 years ago on Friday.
The once-mighty History Channel is ignoring the anniversary of Lincoln's speech, in favor of its pathetic array of junk finders, junk hoarders, and junk exploiters. So much for the idea that "government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth."

♪ NEW ALBUM drops today: “A” SIDE…
JULIE LEE'S NEW ALBUM
by Kim Fowler
Over the years, Julie Lee's voice and songwriting talents have been in high demand on various projects, including those of Sarah Siskind, Will Kimbrough, Jars of Clay, Peter Cooper & Eric Brace, Thad Cockrell, Over The Rhine, Alison Krauss, Pam Tillis, Ron Block, Mark Erelli, Mark Newton & Dave Peterson, and many others.
She has attracted plenty of critical acclaim:
The Washington Post writes, "Her soprano sounds conversational, even confidential, but it grabs the high notes and milks them dry. Her songwriting strikes a perfect balance between sharp details and universal resonance, confessional lyrics and singalong melodies, earnest spirituality and self-effacing humor."
Billboard Magazine says, "As a vocalist, she's a powerhouse, owning a solid gold tremolo laced with attitude and blessed with range that she wields with style...a world-class singer."
Julie Lee’s eighth and most artistically imaginative album, “Till and Mule,” comes out today, November 19, 2013. The last project released by the lauded songwriter and mezzo-soprano and her band, The Baby Daddies, was praised for its Southern roots instrumentation with jazz undertones. For this album, Lee chose artist and composer Aaron Roche as her co-producer to help her create a completely different, sonically visual landscape.
Julie Lee describes “Till and Mule” this way:
“Several of these songs came to me in an unusual way. The title track came after digging in the dirt in my garden and then driving through the Midwest while on tour. Each song has a sense of place, a landscape.”
Julie continues, “Artistically, what is different about this record is that it was recorded over a year ago, with the initial intention of releasing a double album. I had used some of my 2012 Kickstarter support for the initial recording and mixing, but decided to sit on T & M while Julie Lee & The Baby-Daddies had its moment to shine. This afforded us the gift of a musical rest ... to 'step back from the painting.' It allowed us the chance to look at each song individually with the perspective only time and distance can give. The people I asked to be on the record; to pick up a paintbrush, to add something to the canvas were artists and musicians that I trust implicitly! Aaron Roche, Nathan Phillips, Dan Burns, Jason Goforth, are dear and gifted friends.”
She adds, “Aaron encouraged me to record at Gray Matters in Nashville with engineer Mike Odmark. We began by picking up our 'paint and brushes' to outline the songs with a myriad of musical instruments. Dan Burns (drums and percussion) then joined in to add the perfect foundation and texture to the record. Jason Goforth (pedal steel, lap steel, and harp), who had been playing these songs with me on tour, added the initial wash of color on the canvas. Nathan Phillips then took the canvas home and gently painted with his one-of-a-kind vintage upright piano. We did an initial mixing of the basic tracks in 2012 and then 'let it rest.'”
Julie describes the culmination of the project: “While remixing in early 2013, we sent the canvas to Aaron to compose and record string arrangements on two of the tracks, and suddenly, it was finished. Mike Odmark's refined mixing skills framed with Alex McCullough's yes-mastering genius created a record which is...well...one of my personal favorites.”
She concludes, “My sincere hope is that this music provides personal space for the listener -- to step back from their own painting."

♪ NEW ALBUM drops today: “B” SIDE… (The Guide goes electric in this feature)
THE RECORD COMPANY: "FEELS SO GOOD"
by Erik Andersen & John Hammond
“Feels So Good,” the new EP by L.A.- based band THE RECORD COMPANY, has its release today, November 19, 2013.
THE RECORD COMPANY has received wide-spread exposure through the use of their new title track “Feels So Good” in the theatrical trailer for “Last Vegas,” starring Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro (watch HERE). The band has scored other placements and syncs simply by building their buzz organically, including having songs on ABC's Nashville, CBS' Elementary and Reckless, and USA's Suits, Necessary Roughness, and Royal Pains. Their songs have also been used in ads for Kohler, Subaru, Coors Light, and ABC Sports.
Influenced by Morphine and The Stooges, yet steeped in the classic styles of Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, the sound of the L.A. based rock / blues / roots trio, THE RECORD COMPANY is sometimes described as new and raw. They've burst onto the scene in an alarmingly short amount of time, forming just a little under two years ago, and have already gained high praises and garnered the attention of some of music's top names. Highlights to date include performing shows with Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Social Distortion, Ivan & Alyosha, and JD McPherson. Next month, they'll share a bill with the legendary B.B. King at the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa. The Record Company is releasing “Feels So Good,” their second EP, on November 19th.
Jason Kramer (KCRW) raved that "The first time I saw them I was mesmerized...a classic blues feel with a rock n' roll vibe. It feels incredibly natural," while Time Out LA stated "The band's sound is raw, definitely bluesy and reminiscent of some of the best acts of the '50s and '60s - like if John Lee Hooker and the Stooges had a well-behaved love child."
Last week, Elmore Magazine premiered the new title track along with a video from their recently taped live concert session in front of a private audience.
They’re getting good press:
“Making bluesy music in L.A. that would sound more at home in a sweaty, backwoods Mississippi juke joint.” - L.A. Weekly.
“A collection of subtle, funky, and well played blues music that harkens the musical spirits of Morphine and John Lee Hooker.” - The Key/WXPN.
The Record Company, despite a big-sounding name, is a trio. It’s Chris Vos on vocal, guitar and harmonica; bassist / vocalist Alex Stiff; and drummer / vocalist Marc Cazorla. The band came together in Los Angeles, but their sound is rooted in their years of musical fandom growing up in Milwaukee (Vos), Philadelphia (Stiff) and upstate New York (Cazorla). The band released their first EP, “Superdead,” in July 2012. While never trying to simply emulate the great masters, the band has found its own fresh take on the music and can best be described as a group giving a 21st century nod to a timeless art form.
“One night we may be playing with a rockabilly band, the next night with a punk band or a blues act, and we’ll get great response from those different audiences. The music’s close enough to the bone, where we can cross a lot of genres and know that we’re connecting with people," says Chris.
