7 pm (Pacific)  2nd Annual “BOARDS & BANDS SKATEBOARD AUCTION FOR CHARITY” features skateboards with hand-written song lyrics applied by famous musicians, including Elton John, The Clash, Daft Punk, Ben Harper, John Lydon, and others,  as top skaters team up with legendary recording artists to benefit at-risk youth.
+
Tony Hawk, Ben Harper and the Tony Hawk Foundation launch the 2nd Annual collection of skater / music memorabilia including a variety of items contributed by famous musicians.
+
Sir Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin collaborated with pro skater Chris Cole to apply the lyrics to their hit "Candle in the Wind" to Cole's complete skateboard, which shows the wear and tear you might expect from the reigning champion of Street League Skateboarding. That’s one board in the auction.
+
Ben Harper had a vision two years ago to merge the worlds of skateboarding and music to benefit the work of the Tony Hawk Foundation. The plan was for Tony Hawk to invite a select group of professional skateboarders to donate their personally ridden skateboards and submit the name of their favorite songs. Then Harper would send those boards on to the appropriate artists with one simple message: “Please write the lyrics to this skater’s favorite song on his skateboard, and we’ll use it to create more skateparks for kids.” Thus Boards + Bands was born.
+
This year’s chosen recording artists have hand-written the lyrics on these one-of-a-kind skateboards. Included in this unprecedented auction are board collaborations by the following artists and skaters: Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin with Chris Cole; Ben Harper with Christian Hosoi; Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash with Tony Hawk; Daft Punk with Aaron “Jaws” Homoki; John Lydon with Duane Peters; and more to be announced.
+
“Last Year's Boards + Bands auction surpassed all expectations,” said Tony Hawk. “This year we have equal caliber of skaters and musicians contributing, so I am looking forward to seeing the excitement (and high bidding) they bring.”
+
These special collaboration skateboards go up for online auction, beginning tonight 5 at 7 pm (Pacific) on eBay, at:

They will remain on display through the end of the auction at the GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles.

+
This is the first monthly event wherein artists will donate performances to make the rent for Kulak's Woodshed. Dave Morrison says, “Many of you know about Kulak's Woodshed. It's a funky - but high-tech listening room in North Hollywood. I've thought of it as almost a second home for years. It's entirely non-profit, staffed by volunteers, and a place where budding musicians and singer-songwriters of every talent-level can learn and grow, and be a part of the musical community. Every month Paul Kulak [who derives his living solely from the Woodshed] struggles to cover the rent of the building and all other expenses. It's a tremendous burden that he's carried for 14 years. We intend to help with that on an on-going basis.”
+
Dave continues, “Thursday night, Bonnie Raitt's legendary bass player, Freebo -- who is also a widely renowned and wonderful singer-songwriter-guitarist -- is our featured artist. He'll be singing and playing acoustic guitar and mandolele. He has asked Fuzzbee Morse, an equally storied guitarist, to join him. Rounding-out the trio is Chad Watson, widely considered one of the world's top bass players. All three sing. Harmonies are promised.”

“We will provide food and drink for all, as well. Chicken soup, this time, and a veggie soup too. With cornbread and other stuff.”

Thu & Fri, Dec 5 & 6, & Fri’s & Sat’s in Dec, in Santa Monica.
7:30 & 9 pm  “KURT WEILL AT THE CUTTLEFISH HOTEL” plays the newly contrived “The West End Theater” hanging over the ocean at the far end of the Santa Monica Monica Pier.
+
This is one of those improbably “only-in-L.A.” (okay, or only-in-Santa Monica) tales. Seems the Santa Monica Pier Corporation has joined forces with Tony Award winning actor / director Paul Sand to present live theater on the pier, appropriately named The West End Theater. That’s about as far west as you can get in L.A. This is how it happened.
+
Paul is eager to tell the story:
+
“I was taking a walk on the pier with a couple of friends one night recently and I suddenly thought... Wouldn’t this pier be a perfect place to have a theater and present a vivid production of KURT WEILL’S dark, theatrical waterfront songs all about revenge, murder and broken hearts. The next day I contacted Jim Harris, the Deputy Director of the pier and pitched him the idea. He smiled and said ‘O.K., we’ve been wanting to add live theater for the pier and I happen to have an available space at the far west end. It hangs out over the ocean and gets pretty wild up there some time, would that suit you?’”
+
“You bet it would!” said Sand. Jim wound up the conversation with, ”What do you think of calling it The West End Theater? “I can think of nothing better,” said Sand.
+
Paul then contacted a few beautiful, powerful and intense actors, who can also sing, which he had placed in his “remember that talent” part of his brain. Happily they all agreed to play. He called his friend Carol Sills, wife and widow of the legendary director Paul Sills who created Second City and Story Theater and with whom Sand had worked with his entire adult life. Carol Sills found Michael Roth, the musical director, who happens to be a Kurt Weill expert living right here in Santa Monica (a block away from Bertolt Brecht’s old house on 26th St.) “Turns out the guy is brilliant” says Sand. Roth accepted. So did Marie Lalanne, the truly extraordinary surrealist painter, who came aboard to design the costumes and create the murals on huge canvas panels in keeping with the carnival atmosphere of the pier. And, the entire company was formed in less than two weeks.
+
The list of Mr. Weill’s songs (so far) to be performed by the “dreamy” ensemble includes: “Mack the Knife,” and “Surabaya Johnny,” performed by the beautiful, tall and angry, (in a good way) SHAY ASTAR. Then there’s “Pirate Jenny” and “Barbara Song,” performed by the beautiful, incandescent MEGAN RIPPEY. Plus, “Luck Song” aka “On the Insufficiency of Human Behavior,” performed by SOL MASON, a tall lanky attractive kid on the wisely cynical side, who plays the host in this shady waterfront cabaret.
+
“A Final and Horrific Verse of Mack the Knife” will be performed by PAUL SAND (as Mack) who is obsessed with his own version of justice and insatiable desire for revenge.
+
“The Alabama Song” finale is the whole company singing goodnight to the audience from under a red spotlight.
+
The preview night is Dec 5, and the Opening Gala is Dec 6. There are two 45-minute shows each Friday and Saturday night, at 7:30 and 9 pm, throughout December.
+
General Admission $20 + $1.49 fee.

Here’s part of a feature / review story on Jenni’s record and tonight’s show, written by Bob Leggett on December 1, 2013:
**
JENNI ALPERT GOES RETRO FOR HER LATEST RELEASE
**
Although Jenni Alpert is a singer-songwriter who calls Los Angeles her home, she is not afraid to try new and creative methods to reach her audience. Her recent tour benefited Americas' Blood Centers with an innovative Blood Drive tour that brought attention to our constant need to support the Blood Banks across our country.
**
For her latest release, “Shining Light,” Alpert has gone retro, releasing this new treasure on vinyl. Not only that, her release concert will be held at a record store instead of one of L.A.'s usual venues. The Record Parlour is a new vinyl shop which just opened in Hollywood. A product of previous Amoeba Vinyl representative and former owner of Beta Records, Chris Honetschlaeger, The Record Parlour is a great addition to the LA record store scene.

The release party is set for Thursday, December 5, 2013, with doors opening at 7 pm and Alpert's performance at 8 pm.
