♪  In Memoriam: JOHN LENNON


On December 8, 1980, John Lennon’s life was ended by an assassin’s bullets in front of the Dakota, where he and his wife Yoko Ono lived.

Tonight, in Venice, California, from 7:30-9:30 pm, you can attend "IN MEMORIAM: JOHN LENNON," hosted by ROSS ALTMAN, with performances by PAUL ZOLLO, JEFF GOLD, ROBERT WAYNE, JILL FENIMORE, and ESAU ALEMAN.

John Lennon was one of the great artists of the 20th century — both as a member of the Beatles and on his own. John & Yoko had moved to New York City to get away from the madness of England’s tabloid press, but he couldn’t escape the madness of America’s gun culture. A gunman pursued him relentlessly, and took his life, as had befallen President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and, a hundred years earlier, President Abraham Lincoln.

The songwriter whose song “Imagine” had envisioned a world without war, greed and hunger, could not have imagined a world free of crazed music fans whose admiration could so quickly turn to spiteful and vengeful hate.

In the years since John Lennon was murdered his music has continued to fill the void in the lives of those who loved him, and on this 33rd anniversary of his death, musicians gather to give thanks for his life and remember his musical and political legacy.

Join them at The Talking Stick to, as host Ross Altman says, "sing some of his great songs and reflect on America’s possession by the gun lobby controlled by the NRA." They add, "For John Lennon is not the only victim of its murderous tyranny or misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Just this year we have seen Trayvon Martin gunned down in Sanford, Florida, by a vigilante who since a clueless Florida jury acquitted him of murder has been in custody four additional times for acts of rage and the threat of gun-violence. Thank the NRA.”

Ross continues, "In Aurora, Colorado, a coward invaded a cultural temple — a movie theatre premiering the Dark Night Rises, third in the Batman series — and gunned-down twelve innocent young audience members — whose own courage in the face of terror was itself inspiring. The lives they saved demonstrated that their deaths were not in vain. Thank the NRA.”

Ross concludes, "And in Newtown, Connecticut, last Christmas yet another 'mad man' (a term we seem to have resorted to in order to conceal the systematic hold the gun manufacturers have on Congress through the NRA) entered a classroom and gunned down 24 children and 4 teachers and administrators. We remember these as well—as both victims and heroes. Thank the NRA."

Danny Moynahan is a composer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He plays saw in a variety of contexts, including film, theater, live music venues, and playing "Happy Birthday" over the phone for his friends and family. McCabe’s tells us, “You, too, can get those otherworldly sounds from this most unlikely instrument with Danny's expert instruction.”

Topics to be covered include proper technique for getting a sound out of your saw finding pitches, playing intervals, and using vibrato (i.e. making music) playing songs (finding the range and starting pitch) amplifying your saw (pick-ups and mic placement). Danny says, “We'll also discuss equipment, musical contexts, and sawing resources. Bring your own or buy one of the saws we have for sale here at McCabe's. You'll be cutting your own musical niche in no time!”

Bob’s CD “All the Way Home” was praised by Bluegrass Unlimited as "the contemporary bluegrass album of the year…” He is coauthor of "Fretboard Roadmaps for Mandolin," published by Hal Leonard.

Mitch Greenhill recorded two solo albums for Prestige, now re-issued on Fantasy as "Shepherd of the City Blues," and two albums in collaboration with Mayne Smith. The Boston Globe hailed his "movement and drive and touch that anyone who has ever coped with a guitar cannot but envy." He has produced an array of recordings, including a Grammy-winner for Doc Watson, and has composed and designed music and sound for regional theater, where he has received several Drama-Logue awards, and on Broadway. Mitch has appeared on screen in "The Long Riders" and "Safe."

Peter Spelman's extensive history as soloist and band leader includes stints in both Northern and Southern California. Like Bob, Peter cut his eyeteeth in the Greenwich Village musical cauldron, then moved west. He composes much of String Madness's repertoire.

This year's event is celebrated in memory of the late Alan O’Day (#1 hit song, "Undercover Angel"), a longtime and prominent performer of the Los Angeles Holiday Caroling Festivities troop (from 1997 thru 2012), with his wife Yuka and friends.

First internationally recognized as lead guitarist in Beatle Paul McCartney's band Wings, Laurence Juber has since established himself as world-renowned guitar virtuoso, composer and arranger. Juber, known to his fans as LJ, has released 22 solo albums. The latest, “Under an Indigo Sky” (Solid Air Records) is a jazz / blues tinged studio album that was mixed at Hollywood’s legendary Capitol Studios by top jazz recording engineer Al Schmitt and first released only on vinyl. His concurrent release from the same label, “Catch LJ Live!,” is a two-disc combo that captures one exciting solo concert performance in 5.1 video and on CD. His album, “LJ Plays The Beatles,” was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine's all-time Top Ten albums.

Juber's solo arrangement of “The Pink Panther Theme” earned him a second Grammy. His arrangement of “Stand By Me” was heard nationally in a “Diamonds Are Forever” commercial. His DVD-Audio project Guitar Noir (AIX Records) won a CES Demmy award for best sound. On December 8, 1980, John Lennon’s life was ended by an assassin’s bullets in front of the Dakota, where he and his wife Yoko Ono lived.

He was one of the great artists of the 20th century — both as a member of the Beatles and on his own. John & Yoko had moved to New York City to get away from the madness of England’s tabloid press, but he couldn’t escape the madness of America’s gun culture. A gunman pursued him relentlessly, and took his life, as had befallen President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and, a hundred years earlier, President Abraham Lincoln.

The songwriter who had imagined a world without war, greed and hunger, could not have imagined a world free of crazed music fans whose admiration could so quickly turn to spiteful and vengeful hate.

In the years since John Lennon was murdered his music has continued to fill the void in the lives of those who loved him, and on this 33rd anniversary of his death, musicians gather to give thanks for his life and remember his musical and political legacy.

Join them at The Talking Stick to, as host Ross Altman says, "sing some of his great songs and reflect on America’s possession by the gun lobby controlled by the NRA." They add, "For John Lennon is not the only victim of its murderous tyranny or misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Just this year we have seen Trayvon Martin gunned down in Sanford, Florida, by a vigilante who since a clueless Florida jury acquitted him of murder has been in custody four additional times for acts of rage and the threat of gun-violence. Ross continues, "In Aurora, Colorado, a coward invaded a cultural temple — a movie theatre premiering the Dark Night Rises, third in the Batman series — and gunned-down twelve innocent young audience members — whose own courage in the face of terror was itself inspiring. The lives they saved demonstrated that their deaths were not in vain. Thank the NRA.”

Ross concludes, "And in Newtown, Connecticut, last Christmas yet another 'mad man' (a term we seem to have resorted to in order to conceal the systematic hold the gun manufacturers have on Congress through the NRA) entered a classroom and gunned down 24 children and 4 teachers and administrators.
