"Today in 1903 Wilbur Wright took to the skies for the first time, in a plane designed and built with his brother Orville. He flew a grand total of 37m in the Wright Flyer I, that’s less than half the wingspan of one A380. Do you think that those pioneers of aviation ever imagined what the future would hold for their invention?" -- British Airways.

8 pm AIREEN & THE HOBOS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; www.coffeegallery.com; reservations: 626-798-6236.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane calls them, “ENGLISH (UK), MULTI-CULTURAL. AMERICAN. AMERICANA, FILIPINO. AND, NOT TO FORGET THE UKULELE. A NIFTY NIGHT OF WONDERFUL MUSIC.”
+
AIREEN & THE HOBOS are a multinational trans-Atlantic ensemble. Aireene Espiritu is a singer-songwriter based in Oakland, CA and plays a mix of stompin', swayin', and timeless Americana on tenor ukulele. The core of her music is in the storytelling and down to earth vocals inspired by sounds from the South and growing up to her uncles' Filipino folk guitar fingerpicking. Almost three years ago, Aireene planned a tour connecting all her friends nationwide, moved all her belongings in storage, packed the car and took off. She has called the road her home ever since with no signs of slowing down. In the Spring of 2013, she expanded into new territory overseas for her first European tour. So it was by fate that she would be paired up with The Hobos, with similar wanderlust-spirited minds, a constant yearning for a ride of the senses, and a love of conveying their experiences through carefully crafted words, rolling rhythms and sweet melodies.
+
The Hobos is a London-based four piece alt-folk band with vocals, accordion, banjo, guitar, bass and percussion. The members are a mix of English and expats who grew up in different parts of the world, in the US, Kenya and Portugal, with a third culture that identifies their home as anywhere and everywhere. Their songwriting ties in life on the road, of trains, of love longing and has charmed fellow free-spirited hearts of every town they've marked their stamp on.
+
After their first 23-day European tour together, becoming fans of each others' music and singing along to each others’ songs while on the road, they decided to form a new project and joined forces as Aireene & The Hobos . They reunited this summer as one band, playing in the UK and Germany and now in the USA with their six week West Coast tour in November and December.
+
Praise for The Hobos: The Windmill venue in London, voted the third best music venue in London, has praised The Hobos, saying they "produce some of the sweetest sounds out of South London." UK Music Jobs compared them to Laura Marling and Beth Orton, saying "These Brixton-based musicians offer up twinkling guitars and a folksy storytelling charm that seems miles away from South London. Their first EP was released earlier this year, and features four fantastic pieces of acoustic musings and comforting melodies."
+
Praise for Aireene:
+
“Espiritu’s penchant for songs that sound like they came off a 78 rpm record, listeners will be swept away.” - Good Times Weekly, Santa Cruz CA
+
"I love what I heard, It's perfect for my kinda folk show-- bright, melodic, rootsy and with excellent vocals and hot pickin' too. What else can a lifelong Folk DJ ask for. " -Gene Shay, aka The Grandfather of Philadelphia Folk Music, WXPN Radio, The Folk Show
+
Manos Demetris, WCBN, Ann Arbor, MI, says, “For a small woman, Aireene's full voice packs a wallop. She was born in the Philippines and came to the States when she was 10. Her simple accompaniment is a Martin tenor ukelele, having a pure sound with few high frequency harmonics. This is folk music with strong Southern connections, and Aireene (pronounced like ‘Irene’) sings without country affectations. All songs are originals except the traditional ‘Oh Come, Angel Band.’ Aireene visited WCBN on 11/5/2011 for an interview and live performance. Her vocals can be playful one minute, and plaintive the next. When she finished the last notes of ‘Oh Come, Angel Band,’ every eye in the studio was moist, including mine. These are charming songs from a charming young artist."
+
Richard Rice, of the San Francisco Free Folk Festival & San Francisco Hootenanny Night, adds, "Aireene's songs are mostly originals. They just sound like songs Alan Lomax might have collected during one of his cross country recording jaunts. They carry both historic sweep and personal nuance. The melodies are full of bluesy longing, fingerpicked delicately on her tenor ukulele."
