News and Saturday’s HUGE Music Scene – Dec 7, 2013
.
Yes, we’ll say it: it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Or Yule. Or blustery winter. Or all of the above. Musically, it’s an amaaaazing day (ghost of Huell Howser) with vast amounts of live music, two festivals, two GREAT web radio shows, and more. We start with a couple of news items, and we call the first one important.

♪ DECEMBER 7th, THEN AND NOW...
We are still affected and effected by 9-11. But before that, there was December 7th.
It's easy to characterize it as just another of history's darkest days and think it was somehow different, or to relegate it in the national consciousness to the emotional and psychological status of the dust of the ancients. Some of us can't.
If you've ever been to Pearl Harbor and seen the drops of fuel oil still rising to the surface from the battleship Arizona, it is as if the hundreds entombed there are reaching out to us, asking "Why?"
An entire fleet went to the bottom on that day, 72 years ago today. The Arizona was one of only two ships not raised after the attack. When she exploded, her hull was shattered and her crew was killed.
Any day that memorializes warfare is tough for peace advocates. It's tougher for those who lost and sacrificed, and for their loved ones.
Ironically, it is the damaged veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, two unpopular wars, and not the veterans of World War II, who have finally earned a plethora of help and services for their service.
Not even all World War II veterans have received their due, emotionally, financially, or in expressions of our gratitude. Those who served in the Merchant Marine are still waiting for basic veterans benefits, despite the fact they suffered casualty rates -- combat deaths -- on par with the crews of the B-17s.
The Greatest Generation quite literally saved the world from continued genocide and brutal repression that knew no bounds. But they were not, and are not, the only Americans who have served.
So, on this day, December 7th, let us remember all of them, and seek to learn whatever elusive lessons we have missed to guarantee all humanity that no other young people will lie beneath the ocean in an exploded ship, or be pulverized inside an exploded building, or be left in a remote jungle, or lie in a pool of blood in a rocky desert. Remember Pearl Harbor.

♪ NBC's Live Rendition of "THE SOUND OF MUSIC"
The critics have checked-in regarding the $9 million TV version of the stage musical tribute -- and that's what it was, NOT a "remake" of the classic movie.
One point the critics missed: a LOT of people, including young people, got exposed to music with melodies and harmonies. That's HUGE in a time when Big Music is only about droll, atonal thudding.
MIMI CHEN, host of "PEACE, LOVE, AND SUNDAY MORNING" on 100.3 The Sound in L.A., and a former radio colleague of the Guide's editor, also checked-in.
Mimi agreed with our assessment, and she said, "Yes, it was a nice... in spite of all the spite toward Carrie's acting. However, I would like to see a new totally original musical... not one that has been done and/or seen a million times."
That is an interesting idea. Given big money and Big Music, we wonder if there is any chance a new musical, made for primetine network TV, could become something enduring, or if it would simply be yet another outlet for intentionally disposable pop drivel.
We congratulate NBC for trying something worthwhile, even if the factors caused an pop-country singer to be chosen for the lead, and to arrive woefully inexperienced with stage roles or a developed, cultivated, nurtured stage presence.

Their latest CD, "White Swan," has been Number 1 on the Roots Music Report's Top 50 Internet Folk Chart for 3 months running.

Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band have been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention, in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk. A lush newgrass Americana folk fusion quintet presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze.

Winner of the Just Plain Folks 2006 Music Award for Best Roots Album for their debut CD "Blue Eyed Darlin,'" The Hilonesome Band is Steve Rankin on mandolin, Rob Carlson on guitar and dobro, Fred Sanders on bass and Mark Indictor on fiddle, showcasing the songwriting of lead guitarist Carlson.

The band has appeared at many premier venues and festivals on the West Coast, including Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage, McCabe's Guitar Shop, The Broad Stage, the Hollywood Bowl, and CalTech Folk Music Society among others. In 2011 their live album “Live at the Freight & Salvage” was released, this their first recording to include new fiddler Mark Indictor who joined the ensemble in 2010. 7 pm CONNOR "SULLY" SULLIVAN plus ALLIE TAYLOR at Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale; 661-272-9530.
+
A California boy born and bred, singer-songwriter CONNOR "SULLY" SULLIVAN has ping-ponged back and forth from one end of the Golden State to the other. Currently encamped in a secret bunker somewhere in North Hollywood, he embarks regularly on musical forays deep into the heartland of music lovers everywhere. If you had to pin him down, he'd say folk-pop, but that's sort of like nailing Jello to the wall.
+
"Sharing my songs with an audience is a dream come true. If I can make one person feel emotion that they could not do on their own, then I have done my job," he says. Plus, Allie vouches for him.
+
And then it's welcome back to hometown hero and Palmtucky gal ALLIE TAYLOR her own bad self, who makes Sully seem like a hidebound traditionalist. It's getting a little weird calling her "Butler's little sweetheart," because Allie's done a lot of growing up, both personally and musically since she made her Butler's debut over five years ago. She was all big Bambi-in-the-headlights eyes at the time, but even then she had a voice that could make your heart skip a beat.
+
Flash forward and she's a confident and formidable musical power of nature, as adept at belting out country/rock barnstormers with Shotgun Granny as she is crooning slow burn jazz standards, wringing every bit of emotion out of some indie rock chip off the old block or going full-tilt boogie with a rock band thundering behind her. Butler’s music guy tells us, “I'm not even sure what she'll be doing this Saturday, but like the Fat Man says, ‘It's bound to be something astounding!’"

7:30 & 9 pm “KURT WEILL AT THE CUTTLEFISH HOTEL” at the newly contrived “The West End Theater” hanging over the ocean at the far end of the Santa Monica Monica Pier.
+
Performances run Thursdays & Fridays in December, beginning with a Dec 5 preview.
+
This is one of those improbably “only-in-L.A.” (okay, or only-in-Santa Monica) tales. Seems the Santa Monica Pier Corporation has joined forces with Tony Award winning actor / director Paul Sand to present live theater on the pier, appropriately named The West End Theater. That’s about as far west as you can get in L.A. This is how it happened.
+
Paul is eager to tell the story:
+
“I was taking a walk on the pier with a couple of friends one night recently and I suddenly thought... Wouldn’t this pier be a perfect place to have a theater and present a vivid production of KURT WEILL’S dark, theatrical waterfront songs all about revenge, murder and broken hearts. The next day I contacted Jim Harris, the Deputy Director of the pier and pitched him the idea. He smiled and said ‘O.K., we’ve been wanting to add live theater for the pier and I happen to have an available space at the far west end. It hangs out over the ocean and gets pretty wild up there some time, would that suit you?’”
+
“You bet it would!” said Sand. Jim wound up the conversation with, ”What do you think of calling it The West End Theater? “I can think of nothing better,” said Sand.
+
Paul then contacted a few beautiful, powerful and intense actors, who can also sing, which he had placed in his “remember that talent” part of his brain. Happily they all agreed to play. He called his friend Carol Sills, wife and widow of the legendary director Paul Sills who created Second City and Story Theater and with whom Sand had worked with his entire adult life. Carol Sills found Michael Roth, the musical director, who happens to be a Kurt Weill expert living right here in Santa Monica (a block away from Bertolt Brecht’s old house on 26th St.) “Turns out the guy is brilliant” says Sand. Roth accepted. So did Marie Lalanne, the truly extraordinary surrealist painter, who came aboard to design the costumes and create the murals on huge canvas panels in keeping with the carnival atmosphere of the pier. And, the entire company was formed in less than two weeks.
+
The list of Mr. Weill’s songs (so far) to be performed by the “dreamy” ensemble includes: “Mack the Knife,” and “Surabaya Johnny,” performed by the beautiful, tall and angry, (in a good way) SHAY ASTAR. Then there’s “Pirate Jenny” and “Barbara Song,” performed by the beautiful, incandescent MEGAN RIPPEY. Plus, “Luck Song” aka “On the Insufficiency of Human Behavior,” performed by SOL MASON, a tall lanky attractive kid on the wisely cynical side, who plays the host in this shady waterfront cabaret.
+
“A Final and Horrific Verse of Mack the Knife” will be performed by PAUL SAND (as Mack) who is obsessed with his own version of justice and insatiable desire for revenge.
+
“The Alabama Song” finale is the whole company singing goodnight to the audience from under a red spotlight.

This year's event is celebrated in memory of the late Alan O’Day (#1 hit song, "Undercover Angel"), a longtime and prominent performer of the Los Angeles Holiday Caroling Festivities troop (from 1997 thru 2012), with his wife Yuka and friends.
+
For the event's audience, it’s likely to be the only live show they’ll see all year. Think about that.
+
RSVP immediately to the event's producer (info below) and if pertinent, provide authorization to use your name on the invitation, website, press release etc.
+
If you are unable to attend, please take this encouragement to gather your own group, or to go individually, and visit your local senior centers or residential facilities for shut-ins. This simple act of kindness can make a difference and add true meaning for all, through and beyond the holiday season
+
The Acoustic Americana Music Guide proudly supports this event every year. In addition, we always find our participation to be profoundly and personally meaningful. And we add our invitation to that from the producer, and encourage you to take part!
