Concert dates are Wed, Jan 15; Fri, Jan 17; Sat, Jan 18; Wed, Jan 22; Fri, Jan 24; Sat, Jan 25, in Inglewood; all shows at 8 pm.

THE EAGLES play the newly-restored Forum in Inglewood.

Eagles! Forum! It's an L.A. homecoming over 40 years in the making. The Eagles celebrate the re-opening of the Fabulous Forum with six shows in January, and all will be sold-out.

They're firmly rooted in what would become roots-Americana, having started in country-folk before taking the folk-rock world by storm.

In today’s faddish, fractured music landscape, it’s refreshing that classic bands like the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre -- Dad may not know what Spotify is, and Little Johnny may not know what LP stands for, but chances are both know the words to “Hotel California.” As the best-selling American band of the ’70s, and one of the top-selling acts of all time, the Eagles’ relaxed harmonies and California-inspired sound came to define what critics eventually dubbed classic rock, and cemented their role as enduring musical icons.

Since forming in 1971, the band has undergone breakups, makeups, and more than its fair share of success and drama –- so much drama, in fact, that 2013’s career-spanning documentary "History of the Eagles" had to be released as a two-parter. In support of the film, the Eagles are back on the road in 2013 for the "History of the Eagles Tour," which frontman Don Henley has hinted may be their last.

Meaning this may well be fans’ final opportunity to see the Eagles play their greatest hits in concert.

After playing together as Linda Ronstadt’s backing band in the early ’70s, the Eagles hit the ground running with their self-titled debut in 1972, which spawned the Top 40 country rock hits “Take It Easy," “Witchy Woman,” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” Follow-up effort "Desperado" contained one of the band’s most enduringly popular songs with its title track, and established the collaborative songwriting relationship between Don Henley and Glenn Frey that would prove so crucial to the band’s future success.

1974’s "On The Border," which saw the band breaking away from country music in favor of a more rock and roll sound, earned the band their first No. 1 single with “Best of My Love.”

But it was 1975’s "One Of These Nights" that really heralded the Eagles’ arrival as one of America’s biggest bands, earning them a Grammy for the single “Lyin’ Eyes.”

In 1976, the Eagles released the album that would contribute most to their legacy in popular culture – "Hotel California" became their best-selling album, and the album’s title track won "Record of the Year" at the 1977 Grammys.

The band’s astronomical success and grueling tour schedule began to take its toll, and with tensions running high, the band called it quits after a 1980 concert in Long Beach, CA, that the band refers to as “Long Night at Wrong Beach.” Henley and Frey both pursued successful solo careers in the ’80s, including Henley’s successful collaboration with then-girlfriend Stevie Nicks, but it wasn’t until 1994’s "Hell Freezes Over" tour and live album that the band reunited for the first time.

Despite being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, fans had to wait until 2007 for "Long Road Out of Eden" – the band’s first new studio material in over 28 years. The album earned two Grammys, and definitively proved a commitment and staying power that the Eagles continue to display in their impressive live shows.

Billy Joel has had 33 Top 40 hits and 23 Grammy nominations since signing his first solo recording contract in 1972. In 1990, he was presented with a "Grammy Legend Award." Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, Joel was presented with the "Johnny Mercer Award," the organization's highest honor, in 2001. In 1999 he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and has received the Recording Industry Association of America "Diamond Award," presented for albums that have sold over 10 million copies.

"Movin' Out," a Broadway musical based on Joel's music, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp, was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and took home two, including "Best Orchestrations" -- Billy's first Tony Award win -- and "Best Choreography."

For his accomplishments as a musician and as a humanitarian, Billy Joel was honored as the 2002 MusiCares "Person Of The Year" by the MusiCares Foundation and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

In 2006, Billy Joel embarked on his first solo tour in nearly seven years, playing to nearly three-quarters of a million people around the world. A highlight of the tour was a record-breaking twelve-show sold-out run at New York's Madison Square Garden.

9 pm-2 am  Americana hotshots THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL play one of the finales in the "AFRO FUNKE'" series at Zanzibar, 1301 5th St, Santa Monica 90401 (Entrance on Arizona); 310-451-2221; www.zanzibarlive.com
+
We're happily surprised we can list this event. The Guide used to list some shows at Zanzibar, fairly regularly, and the editor had performing guests on his "Tied to the Tracks" radio show to promote their gigs at the venue.
+
But that's been YEARS ago. Zanzibar went all "world beat" (aka rap and hiphop in other languages, and thuddingly annoying electronica "dance") and there was no reason to pay any attention to them any more.
+
Until now. Their "Afro Funke" series is in its final month, and, will wonders never cease, they remembered their old broadly-based diverse roots, and booked Americana string band DUSTBOWL REVIVAL to play there Thursday night.
+
For its part, DUSTBOWL REVIVAL says, "We are ALL so pumped to be a part of the final month of the amazing Afro Funke' dance party series that has rocked at Zanzibar in Santa Monica for many years. Last west side Dustbowl Revival show of 2013 - let's groove together by the sea!"
+
Venice, California-based Dustbowl Revival is a collective that merges old school bluegrass, gospel, jug-band, swamp blues and the hot swing of the 1930s to form a spicy roots cocktail that's a hoot-and-a-half of fun.
+
Known for their inspired live sets, the Dustbowl Revival boldly brings together many styles of traditional American / roots Americana music. Imagine Old Crow Medicine Show meeting Louis Armstrong’s Hot Seven Band in New Orleans or Bob Dylan and Fats Waller jamming with Mumford & Sons on a front porch in 1938.
+
Growing steadily from a small string band playing up and down the West Coast (hundreds of shows in the last two years), DBR has blossomed into a traveling collective featuring instrumentation that often includes fiddle, mandolin, trombone, clarinet, trumpet, banjo, accordion, tuba, pedal steel, drums,  guitars, a bass made from a canoe oar,  harmonica, and plenty of washboard and kazoo for good luck.
+
2013 has been a banner year for the band. Their new album, "Carry Me Home," produced by Eric Lilavois, dropped in April. Merging their vintage style with a hip, lose-your-troubles-and-start-moving vibe, the record perfectly encompasses the band’s upbeat message. Beautiful blue vinyls came in July.
+
Seeking to travel more widely in 2013, the band played all over the USA, recently on the "Mountain Song Bluegrass Cruise" to the Bahamas, performing in the same lineups as The Punch Brothers, and David Grisman. In addition, they ventured to Illinois, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and in August, made their first extended East Coast tour. Back home, they opened for Trombone Shorty at the Santa Monica Pier in a big show at the end of the summer.
+
More at www.dustbowlrevival.com
+
For its part, Afro Funké's forte for the past decade had grown away from American music rooted in the black experience. It's been about Afrobeat, Brazilian, Dub, Reggae, Cumbia, Samba Disco, Batucada, Afro-Latin House, Indian Beats, Makossa, "and other deep-rooted Soul music from around the world." The Guide is glad to see this one night during the series' finale when Americana roots are remembered and celebrated.

8 pm  PATRICK BALL, Celtic harper and storyteller extraordinaire, plays his “Christmas Rose” show at the Pasadena Folk Music Society series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (aka “Little Beckman”) on the Caltech campus, 322 S Michigan Av, Pasadena; 626-395-4652, or toll-free 888-2CALTECH (1-888-222-5832); www.events.caltech.edu
+
Patrick Ball has made numerous appearances at Caltech, each time performing a completely different show, sometimes solo, and sometimes with other musicians, and usually combining his stellar harp playing with dramatic performance, interweaving the music with stories and tales from Ireland. Patrick plays the Celtic harp of centuries ago, solid brass strings and a hardwood maple body. This performance, “Christmas Rose,” is solo and Patrick's own words can best describe it:
+
"Some years ago, I recorded a Christmas / Winter season CD and gave it the name of The Christmas Rose because it includes a very beautiful traditional melody that my mother loved and used to sing in her childhood. This recording was awarded the National Association of Independent Record Distributors Indie Award for Best Seasonal Recording of 1991, became a best seller in its own small way, and prompted many requests for a live concert which would feature the pieces on this recording and a selection of beloved Holiday stories.”
+
Patrick continues, “So, I stepped into a magical world of English and Irish literature, Celtic legend and traditional folk beliefs and drew out tales such as A Child's Christmas in Wales, chapters from The Wind in the Willows, and passages from Shakespeare, William Butler Yeats, and Thomas Hardy, and mingled them with beloved pieces of seasonal music. All of the stories and all of the music touch on what is, to my way of thinking, the central message of the Christmas/Winter season: hope. Hope for something wondrous. Hope for a light in the darkness."
