√  Today is “INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY,” if you know any international women…

√  And it’s the birthday, in 1454, of AMERIGO VESPUCCI, the guy whose first name was awarded to the New World. That was, of course, an accident, when a sixteenth century German mapmaker wrongly attributed Amerigo Vespucci with discovering the Americas, and named the continents for him: Amerigo ~ Americas. To think, we could just as easily have been the Columbians – or the Vespuccians – or just “those illegal immigrants” who brought smallpox from Europe.

This has the cheapest admission of any good-sized festival in years (only FIVE BUCKS!), and the schedule bears close examination -- in advance -- for who is performing on what days. For example, Friday night will draw a good crowd with THE FENIANS and SLIGO RAGS playing their only sets at the three-day event.

Quick history: The long-running pre-St. Patrick’s Day “L.A. County Irish Faire” decided to change its schedule to become a midsummer event and go elsewhere, and the experienced professional folks at Fairplex, aware they were about to lose a good event in early March, decided to produce their own “Irish Fest.” Hence, this is it, in its inaugural year, with two music stages.

Gillespie Concert Organ and dino-mite music performed by Pacific Symphony combine with authentic footage from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) to create a family-fun musical expedition into the prehistoric world of “Dinosaurs!” This concert features a 66-pound dinosaur puppet, plus videos and still images of dinosaurs, fossils and paleontologists at work. Filled with “dinosaur-inspired music,” children and families are guided by a paleontologist and her young assistant in a hunt for clues in the music to reveal the identity of a mystery dinosaur. An imaginative spectacle, “Dinosaurs!” sets the mood for that little humanoid T-Rex or Stegosaurus hoping to uncover the mysteries of natural history.

The Southern California folk icon will talk and sing about his work, folk music, and the creative process – and how it all melds into his personal mission in the music.
+
Decades ago, self-described “Singer-Songfighter” ROSS ALTMAN traded his professorship for a life as a political folk singer and music historian of the old and new left. Beyond that, where do you start to describe and define him?
+
With a PhD in Modern Literature from SUNY-Binghamton, he was honored with the Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest 2010 “Music Legend Award,” given annually to just one person. Ross is a member of Local 47 of the Musician’s Union (AFL-CIO), a columnist and staff writer for FolkWorks (www.folkworks.org), and he serves as President of the Santa Monica Traditional Folk Music Club.

For the Ash Grove’s 50th anniversary celebration at UCLA, Ross performed with Guy Carawan (the folk singer who helped transform “We Shall Overcome” into the civil rights anthem we know today); at the House of Blues, Ross sang his song “Tiananmen Square” for the 20th anniversary observance of the June 4,1989 massacre of students protesting for democracy; in 2012, Ross performed two shows to celebrate the Woody Guthrie Centennial, one at the Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival on May 20 and one at the Pasadena Public Library; in 2013, Ross celebrated the 50th anniversary of the musical legacy of the great Civil Rights March on Washington — again at the Topanga Banjo-Contest and Folk Festival and at the Pasadena Public Library.

Ross Altman is a recording artist for his own label — Grey Goose Music — with twelve albums to his credit. In the spirit of journalism icon H.L. Mencken, Ross writes and sings songs “to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.”

Ross is famous all over town, at venues that range from the Talking Stick, Beyond Baroque, Sunset Hall (“Retirement home for ageless radicals”) and the UnUrban, where he will sit for this afternoon’s interview, which happens to fall on “International Women's Day,” an irony not lost on interviewer Gerry Fialka. Ross promises to sing “Aunt Molly Jackson” for the blacklisted Harlan County coal mining organizer, folk singer and author of “I Am a Union Woman.” Come out to hear everything you wanted to know about a folk singer who gave up the comfortable academic life to walk the walk, as well as to talk athe talk and sing the songs that got others walking for racial and social and political justice and equality. This promises to be an enlightening and no-holds-barred interview about major and little-known pieces of history.

It works well to ride the Gold Line light rail to the South Pasadena / Mission St Station and walk from there. The event extends is several blocks long and several blocks deep.

Every year when ARTS CRAWL arrives, South Pasadena comes alive with a cornucopia of the arts for a gallery crawl, live music, food trucks and merchant open houses, most hosting arts displays or artists. It’s hosted by SPARC, the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, participating local businesses and arts organizations. There are two Ribbon Cuttings: one celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory at 6 pm, then you can move down Fair Oaks to Real Estate Heaven for a 6:30 pm Ribbon Cutting ceremony for their arts exhibition.

♪  KENDALL REID, virtuoso cellist, will perform select classical pieces 6:30-7 pm at the South Pasadena Public Library. The library, founded as a vintage Carnegie Library, is an architectural gem. The event is in partnership with the Pasadena Society of Artists (PSA, founded in 1925), which presents the "ARTISTS’ CHOICE EXHIBITION” from 6-19 pm. It’s a showcase of professional paintings, photographs, and sculptures, in the library’s Community Room, at 1115 El Centro St. PSA says these exhibitions “feature only the absolute best work from the studios of the local artists. 40 works from all fields of expression and media will be able to be enjoyed and one will be created during the event. Visitors will be able to meet the artists and gain a better understanding of each exhibited work, while also enjoying delicious hors d’oeuvres and other refreshments provided by the PSA. √  Venues are delightfully varied. Ellen’s Silkscreening has a handmade jewelry exhibition. And you can check out the work of artist Melissa Victoria Nebrida at La Monarca Bakery. Real Estate Heaven is displaying a selection of artists works at their new and recently acquired modern building, opening their first exhibition, "Home Sweet Home" at Arts Crawl. The show features works by local artists in a variety of media that depict different interpretations and representations of home. That’s the REH Headquarters at 1517 Fair Oaks Ave. The reception begins with the 6:30 pm ribbon cutting, is free and open to the public, and features a DJ, free appetizers and refreshments.

Nye, who “breathes poetry like the rest of us breathe air,” as described by the Grand Rapids Press, draws on her Palestinian-American heritage, the cultural diversity of her home in Texas, and her experiences traveling in Asia, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America and the Middle East. The author of author and/or editor of more than 30 volumes, Nye has been a Lannan Fellow, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Witter Bynner Fellow (Library of Congress). She has received numerous honors including a Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets, the Isabella Gardner Poetry Award, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award and more. In 2011 Nye won the Golden Rose Award given by the New England Poetry Club, the oldest poetry reading series in the country.

L.A.-based journalist/author and frequent KCRW contributor Lisa Napoli will interview Nye in a free-flowing conversation about the power of poetry to celebrate culture.
