Nick Smith, veteran storyteller and co-producer of the Pasadena Folk Music Series (formerly the Caltech Folk Music Series), says, “I’m historical advisor for their current productions. The main one, "Battledrum," (Mar 7-Apr 19) is a short musical drama about drummer boys during the Civil War. There are also two performances of a show called "Glory Hallelujah," (Mar 30 & Apr 13) which is letters and music from the Civil War.”

Each performance opens with an opening talk by a historian, leading into the play. Nick tells us, “I will be doing [the historian’s opening] for some of the performances. I’m also helping select the readings and music for the other production. It’s been busy.”

Also in the series, ""THE PLAYER KING," for one show only, Mar 28, 7 pm; it’s about John Wilkes Booth, the actor who assassinated Abraham Lincoln.

“SPOTLIGHT VISUAL ARTS SEMIFINALISTS EXHIBITION” at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N Raymond (across from Memorial Park and the Levitt Pavilion), Old Pasadena.

The exhibition brings the work of thirty Spotlight visual arts applicants, selected as semifinalists, 15 each in Two-Dimensional Art, and Photography. Their work is being exhibited at the Armory Center for the Arts for three weeks, commencing with an opening reception on March 8. You may also view their work online (search for the new site). Altogether, there are 124 semifinalists in all Spotlight performing arts categories.

Maurice Kitchen tells us, “Once again Black History goes on trial in this provocative courtroom drama. Directed by Ted Lange of TV’s ‘The Love Boat,’ the musical chores are executed handily by NAACP Theatre Award winning Musical Director, TC Campbell.

“The Testimony of a Negro” is an engaging and forensic examination of the evolution of Black history and the Negroes at its foundation. “This is a masterful piece of storytelling that I’m proud to be associated with” says Lange. “Before the last performance, I predicted that audiences would laugh, cry, reflect, remember and in the end, come away thoroughly entertained and enlightened. In listening to the audience response in the discussion that followed, that’s exactly what happened. It seems that I was right. Go figure?” He added, “It was a great show and as promised, Maurice nailed his performance.”

Kurt MacInnes – guitar and mandolin: A professional musician since his teens, Kurt’s musical journey has included rock, bluegrass, American roots music, and fin de siècle European salon music. He's worked with such talents as Little Willie and Three Midniters, the Pogues, and Ry Cooder. In recent years Kurt has teamed with Frank and Laura Osborn to play for English country and contra-dances.

Laura Osborn – guitar, flute, and banjo-uke: Another multi-talented musician, Laura plays and teaches flute professionally. The duo reports, “This time around, we'll be playing some old favorites, as well as selections from our new CD, ‘Berrymania.’”

The series producers tell us, “Steve and Cindy have consistently brought us great music in their every-other-year visits. Steve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song, "Darcy Farrow," which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song, which is so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song, was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith.”

Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks, including Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, Linda Ronstadt, Towns Van Zandt, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Cindy Mangsen plays guitar, concertina, and banjo, and is known for her beautiful voice. Early in her career, she gained a reputation for her fine interpretations of haunting songs from Francis Child's collection of Scottish and English ballads, with their American variants. Her version of "Two Sisters" is an excellent example of what she can do with these songs, at:

Rick Shea & The Losin’ End -- Rick Shea is one of the best guitarist and songwriters in the country. He has played with many of the greats, including a long-time slot in Dave Alvin's band. He has a new record out, and the critics are raving about it.

David Serby and The Latest Scam -- David is having a record release party on this night. Grant Langston says, “I've made no secret of my belief that David is the best country music songwriter in LA. His new record is getting great press like this: ‘Each of these ten-track discs would have made a good album on their own, but together they show off a terrific continuum of pop, rock, country and a touch of the blues. Serby’s reach across country, folk and rock were evident in his earlier releases, but the pure pop side is a welcome surprise.’ Hyperbolium.”

In fact, some of the best music in the country is being made in your town.
