Sunday Music & Art Events, Live & on TV, Mar 23, 2014

.
Day and evening, there’s a tuneful scene available to you today, and some fine music-on-tv offerings on through the night. It all awaits, within. Let’s get started.

= + = + = + = += + = +

March 23rd in History…

√  On this day in 1775, PATRICK HENRY delivered his famous “Give me liberty, or give me death” speech at St. John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia. It was a gutsy thing to do, in a colony under rebellion from Great Britain, and could well have gotten him killed for treason against the Crown.

√  On this day in 1857, ELISHA GRAVES OTIS installed the first passenger elevator in the US that was equipped with an automatic safety brake.

√  Today is the combined “National Organize Your Home Office Day” and “National Chip and Dip Day.” And yes, all those are officially proclaimed (somewhere).

√  Today is the birthday of musician / producer RICH RAM.

Sun, Mar 23, in Altadena:
2 pm  JOHN FAHEY TRIBUTE SHOW & 75th BIRTHDAY BASH, featuring DR. DEMENTO, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
Few artists of the last 100 years created a genre of music. Largely regarded as the founder of American Primitive acoustic guitarist, John Fahey did just that. He took country-blues picking and merged it with modern classical and jazz transforming his playing into an entirely new musical landscape that others would travel. The acoustic music that would follow has found its way into the playing of Tony Rice, Bella Fleck and Leo Kottke. It's also become the starting point for new age artists like George Winston. Although Fahey passed away in 2001, his legend continues to grow among musicians and fans. His legendary independently released, The Legend of Blind Joe Death, represents a recording that broke down musical barriers.. And he started from a blues base created by Rev. Gary Davis and Bukka White and marrying them to the modern classical music of Charles Ives and Bela Bartok. The results remain stunning, absorbing, engaging and utterly magical. A full length documentary entitled “In Search of Blind Joe Death - The Saga of John Fahey,” was released in 2013.
+
This is a rare opportunity to remember and honor John Fahey during the month of what would have been his 75th birthday. Today, other artists of Fahey's caliber come together to pay tribute to one of the masters of the form and one of the true legends of American music. Hosted by roots music enthusiast and radio legend, Barry Hansen, aka Dr. Demento, with, for the first time together, two influential and innovative acoustic guitarists, Harry Taussig and Pete Steinberg.
+
Harry Taussig is an American Primitive original, an extraordinary artist who discovered in Fahey a kindred soul. He is the very definition of a Renaissance man. Although he holds Ph.D in biophysics, he continued to develop his talent from music into photography and film where he has made lasting contributions. But Taussig's original and first love was the folk music of the late 50's and early 60's. It was then he discovered The Kingston Trio. He also found the picking style of Elizabeth Cotton, which led him into developing his own fingerpicking style based on a variety of inspirations. In 1965 he recorded the largely improvisation Fate is Only Once. It remained a hidden and nearly forgotten gem until Tompkin Square Records reissued the album in 2005. The albums sold so well, the label asked him for a follow-up. The aptly titled Fate is Only Twice was released in 2010 to critical acclaim. In 2013,he appeared at South by Southwest and was voted one of the top 50 acts to appear at the festival. It seems the best way to honor John Fahey is to give one of his finest peers the opportunity to shine again. So for his world premiere at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, Harry Taussig will be appearing to give us this living American Primitive musical experience.
+
Pete Steinberg is a walking, living, breathing blues history whose experience and talent matches that of his legendary country blues mentors. Growing up uniquely in Santa Monica during the 50's, he witnessed the blues scene in L.A. when artists like Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi John Hurt and Son House first came to town. He absorbed their music, learned and grew as he incorporated their sound into the soul of his guitar playing. He became like a blues hound at their heels as he describes, "when I saw Son House and his music went through me like a bolt. I hounded him whenever he was around and played bottleneck almost exclusively for the next two years." Today he is one of the finest acoustic guitarists residing in the southland and a true disciple of acoustic country blues in all of its forms. But, he has also taken the same path as the great John Fahey extending the soul of his legendary mentors into the present. "The way I play now is very much how I think the Blues scene would have gone had there been no racial prejudice." Steinberg maintains. His personal legacy of great music is true to this statement.
+
As our host, you may not know the name, Barry Hansen, however, as Dr. Demento he needs no introduction. Host of the famous nationally syndicated radio broadcast, which is now streamed on the Internet, the good doctor has brought us novelty, parody and just plain old good music on the radio for the last 40 years. A member of the Comedy Music Hall of Fame and the National Radio Hall of Fame, Hansen continues to bring the good news of music through laughter via the Internet. Few know, however, that Dr. Demento and John Fahey were close friends. The two even interviewed blues legend Son House while students at UCLA in 1965.
+
This event is sure to be sold out, so don't put off your reservations today! It' a rare treat to honor one of the greats of American music and to experience the magic of two of the originals, Harry Taussig & Pete Steinberg and the one-of-a-kind legend and dear friend of John Fahey's, Dr. Demento - Barry Hansen.

The duo reports, “This time around, we'll be playing some old favorites, as well as selections from our new CD, ‘Berrymania.’”
+
Producers of the Pasadena Folk Music Society series, where the duo played last night, tell us, “Steve and Cindy have consistently brought us great music in their every-other-year visits. Steve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song, "Darcy Farrow," which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song, which is so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song, was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith.”
+
Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks, including Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, Linda Ronstadt, Towns Van Zandt, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He's a songwriter's songwriter, and he still excels at it. You can hear him sing "Darcy Farrow," with some fine harmony by Cindy at:
