It’s March 13th, and there’s plenty happening in the venues and an astonishing amount of music on TV. Of course, that’s all in this edition.

√  Today is the officially-proclaimed “JEWEL DAY.” We think for valuable rocks, and not for the folky pop singer.

√  On this day in 1773, CHESTER GREENWOOD patented “Ear Mufflers,” which are saving plenty of ears right now in the snowy Northeast.

√  On this day in 1884, Standard Time was established. No, it wasn’t a rebellion against Daylight Savings Time. Prior to that date, every town kept its own clocks, based on local noon. That didn’t work for the railroads, which needed accurate time for their precise schedules, so that never the twains shall meet. As in, they needed to prevent collisions. So you can thank that transportation mode that puts flanged steel wheels on steel rails for answering CHICAGO’s question, “Does anybody really know what time it is?”

√  Annual OLD TOWN TEMECULA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL, Sat & Sun, FREE


Temecula is now claiming they have “The finest Bluegrass Festival on the West Coast.” That’s plenty arguable, but the certainly do produce a good FREE festival with two stages and plenty of porch jams. And Temecula’s charming downtown has an 1880s-1890s-theme building code, so there is plenty of charm and porches. This year features over a dozen top bluegrass bands from around the nation, including Bluegrass Ect., Silverado, and part-time bluegrass / plenty Celtic Sligo Rags. Daytime concerts are all free. Tickets are required for the Saturday night indoor concert at the theater, and can be purchased at www.temeculatheater.org

A special treat for overnight campers on Friday evening will include bluegrass bands at various Old Town restaurants, and a special concert at Old Town Temecula Community Theater featuring CURLY TAYLOR & ZYDECO TROUBLE with opener the BAYOU BROTHERS.

Saturday and Sunday Workshops are offered by participating musicians and are free of charge. Plus, it’s wine country, and a scenic part of the world.

In addition to all that’s officially scheduled, there’s more, including Friday evening, 6-9 pm, at the Third Street Smokehouse with the 3RD STREET BLUEGRASS BAND; and OLD HAYWIRE plays the Antique Faire both days, 2-5 pm, across from Rosas; THE WIMBERLEYS play Saturday at Mad Madeline’s Fresh Produce at the Farmer's Market, 8 am-1 pm.

Tickets for the SATURDAY EVENING CONCERT at 7 pm always sell-out by midday Saturday. This year features the James King Band, Bluegrass Etc., and Silverado. Tix are $20, at:

√  ART NIGHT PASADENA, Friday night, is FREE


This is an entire evening of free programs and free admissions, and they throw-in free shuttle buses. From 6-10 pm, you can journey among 16 participating cultural institutions, where you can enjoy, savor, gain new appreciations and understandings, and make new memories. Then, free shuttles await to transport you to your next destination.

Food trucks – many of them the most sought-after in the current L.A. gourmet food truck craze – are parked outside most of the venues. You can even download a list of which ones are where. (The night is free except for the food, and a few venues have free snacks.)

Park at one of the venues and ride the free shuttles to the others. Or ride Metro and show your transit pass card to get free gifts at some of the 16 venues. The Gold Line light rail Memorial Park Station is right in the middle of things.

This time around, unlike past years, the event is light on music. Our #1 pick? Go to the Norton Simon and see the incredible collection of Medieval and Renaissance paintings and sculptures; you’ll feel like you hoped a Star Trek transporter to the Louvre.

BARRY McGUIRE stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the “Andy Williams Show” as the gravelly voiced lead singer of the New Christy Minstrels. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar."

In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times.

Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with “Rock&Roll” you get Barry McGuire.”

JOHN YORK (THE BYRDS) is working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The Sixties." John is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned folk rock/country rock group, the Byrds. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John), Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band)……and many others. The TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist Sumi Foley.
