Tom Fair says, “Behind the scenes, we call it ‘MM3’ - the 3rd in a series of ‘Mountain Music’ concerts based on the musical traditions of the eastern mountains of Appalachia. This one is extra-special to all of us because it deals with musical moments that defined an era -the first sound recordings of the songs that became the foundation for modern Folk and Country Music. The Carter Family (photo at bottom below),from the hill country at the border of Virginia and Tennessee recorded over two hundred songs between 1927 and 1942 - and on March 1st, 2014 the Urban Homestead in Pasadena will ring and rock to a selection of the best of the Carter catalog. Not to be missed!”

+
JUNE KATO - solid, dependable upright bass player who “keeps us in the traffic lane.”
+
ROB SANDIFORD - a versatile multi-instrumentalist (banjo, mandolin, Dobro, etc.) and vocalist. Tom says, “Rob is the icing on our musical cake, he rounds out our profound sound.”
+
If you are not familiar with the Carter Family, you needn't feel alone - I have to admit that even though I've spent my entire life from age 3 immersed in music of all kinds, it wasn't until 2013 that I became fully aware of the Carter Legacy. The Carters can be considered the link between the Mountain Music of frontier days in the Appalachians and modern sounds in folk, bluegrass and country music. Beginning in 1927, they recorded over 200 songs that became a source of material and inspiration for hundreds of recording acts that followed. They were prominent on the record charts of their day, their "hits" being "Wildwood Flower" (1928), "Keep On the Sunny Side" (1928), "Tonight I'm Thinking of My Blue Eyes" (1929), "Worried Man Blues" (1930), "Lonesome Valley" (1931), and their most popular "Can the Circle Be Unbroken," (1935) since recorded in numerous versions by countless musical artists of all varieties. Alvin Pleasant (‘A.P.’) Carter was the driving force behind their success; Sara provided the lead vocals on most of their recordings; and Maybelle, an accomplished guitarist with a distinctive and imitated style, provided the ‘licks’ and harmony. Audiences not previously familiar with the original Carter family may have come to know Maybelle as the mother of June Carter and mother-in-law of Johnny Cash. Carlene Carter and Rosanne Cash represent a third generation of this inspiring musical family.”

These two singer-songwriters are surely familiar to you: ERIC BRACE is the leader of LAST TRAIN HOME, a celebrated roots-rock-alt-everything band. PETER COOPER is a sweet-singing songwriter with three solo records to his name, who is also the chief music writer for Nashville's daily newspaper, “The Tennessean.” His newest solo release, “Opening Day,” is a work of a man at the peak of his substantial talents. As with last year’s sold-out Wild Honey Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper show at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, this event will benefit the Autism Think Tank The non-profit organization brings together a team of top autism specialists, via an Internet medical conference, to tackle the seemingly intractable and painful medical/psychological issues faced by kids like Wild Honey co-organizer Paul Rock’s nine-year-old son Jake, a non-verbal autistic boy with extreme digestive distress and self-injury issues. Thanks to Jake’s recent involvement with the Think Tank (made possible by one of the three sponsorships raised by the previous show), there has been a huge reduction in his digestive-distress-induced self-injury. Building on this success, the proceeds from this show will help the Think Tank relieve the suffering of even more kids like Jake. The show will also support the Children’s Music Fund, a Southern California non-profit, in their effort to provide music therapy and musical instruments for children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic or life-altering illness. Founded by Autism Think Tank member Dr. Raffi Tachdjiian, an UCLA allergist and pediatric pain specialist, the Children’s Music Fund works to harness the amazing healing power of playing and listening to music to reduce the pain and suffering of kids with autism, cancer, and many other debilitating conditions.
+
Dating back to 1994, Wild Honey’s grassroots benefit/tribute shows have featured appearances by Brian Wilson, Dave Davies from the Kinks, the late Alex Chilton, Danny Hutton from Three Dog Night, Chuck Negron, Dan Wilson, P.F. Sloan, John Brion, Peter Case, The Plimsouls, Victoria Williams, The Williams Brothers, Dave Alvin, The Blue Shadows, Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Scott Miller from the Loud Family, Ann Magnuson, and so many more. The shows have been produced at various Los Angeles-area locations including the Morgan-Wixson Theater in Santa Monica, the Roxy, the Knitting Factory (Hollywood) and the El Rey Theatre.
+
Over the years, Wild Honey shows have raised funds and awareness for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, Habitat for Humanity, the Liberty Hill Foundation, USC Norris Cancer Center, and the Coalition to End Gun Violence while paying tribute to musical idols: Brian Wilson, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Everly Brothers, The Hollies, Harry Nilsson, Pete Townshend, solo Paul McCartney, and Elvis Costello.

John Zipperer's first CD, “FULL CIRCLE,” on his Ziptunes label, arrives today in “a musical celebration,” with John joined on stage by his John Zipperer & Friends band mates, Barrett Tagliarino, Tara Sitser, Jime Van Booven, and Jaynee Thorne, “as well as the magnificent musicians” featured on "Full Circle," including the CD’s producer Nick Kirgo (Les McCann, Nelson Riddle, Vonda Shepard, Dianne Reeves), the ubiquitous Dave Beyer on drums (Christopher Cross, Melissa Etheridge, Gregg Allman, Jackson Browne), and more to be announced.
+
Distribution is through CD Baby and the album will be available at Amazon, iTunes and other quality outlets. To which John adds, “if you can't come, please buy the CD at CD Baby, iTunes, etc. available on Feb 25th.”
+
A revealing review reads: “A former TV actor and stuntman, John Zipperer’s second chance came rolling down the highway of life, not on a carefully controlled movie or commercial set, but while changing a tire for a friend along the 285 freeway in Atlanta, GA. John was hit by a ten-wheel oil truck. After flying forty feet and landing in the hospital, John was told by the critical care doc, ‘You should be dead!’ To John this seemed like a clear sign that life is, or could be, too short. He packed everything he owned into his 1976 Camaro and headed out to Los Angeles to pursue a life in music. It was ZipTime! John’s clear voice, infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics reach fans in places that they didn’t know existed. Soon everyone is singing along, swaying, chair dancing, head bobbing, and clapping. Fans remark over and over about the joy that is evident when the band is on stage: joy in their playing, joy for their audience, joy from their audience. John Zipperer & Friends deliver a unique and refreshing blend of rock, folk, country and blues. With a stellar lineup of band members drawing upon the wealth of experience, credits range from Jethro Tull and Vanilla Fudge to Frank Zappa and The Wallflowers.”
+
John Zipperer is the front man with lead vocals, rhythm and/or lead guitar and increasing turns on the mandolin and banjo; Barrett Tagliarino adds flashy guitar, vocals and mandolin; Tara Sitser contributes vocals, keyboard, and ukulele; Jime Van Booven rounds-out the mix with solid bass lines and vocals.
