MARDI GRAS, plus all of Monday’s Music & Art Scene ~ Mar 3 & 4, 2014

.
MARDI GRAS ~ that’s “Fat Tuesday” to all you English-only types ~ is Tuesday, March 4. Here in Southern California – quite uniquely – we don’t limit ourselves to a build-up to one day and a complete cessation of happiness when that day ends. No matter what tradition demands anyplace else. (How typically Southern Californian.)

Of course MARDI GRAS is always on an unpredictable date. Everywhere else, it’s the LAST DAY you can get “fat” before the self-imposed deprivations of the Catholic calendar, commencing with Ash Wednesday, through the somber season of Lent. Which means it’s tied to Easter. Which means it’s tied to Passover. So there. You owe your Mardi Gras revelry to the Jews. L’chaim as you rouler les bonne temps!

* * * * * *

March 3rd & 4th in History…

√  March 3 is “WORLD WILDLIFE DAY.” It’s organizers say, "Let us recognize and embrace the beauty of our natural world & motivate others to care, and act, to secure a future for wildlife." Our thanks to L.A.-based singer-songwriter MICHAEL ANN for reminding us.

√  It’s a STAR SPANGLED BANNER day on March 3: On this day in 1931, Francis Scott Key’s poem "The Star Spangled Banner," as set to music long before, was made our National Anthem. Thus, the United States of America became the world's only nation to have the melody of awkwardly-written beer-drinking pub song as the music for a poem, about an obscure incident in an otherwise forgotten war, as its national anthem.

This photo on the Guide’s home page is the 42' x 30’ flag that inspired Key to pen the poem from the deck if a British warship where he was being held captive in Baltimore harbor, off Fort McHenry while it was bombarded by the British fleet. Today, the flag is displayed in protective low-light at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. (Photo from the Defense Commissary Agency.)

Mar 4, in Hollywood:
4 pm  ORGONE plays live for "FAT TUESDAY" (Mardi Gras) at Amoeba Hollywood, 6400 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-245-6400;  HYPERLINK "http://www.amoeba.com" www.amoeba.com.
+
If you were there for Mardi Gras -- Fat Tuesday -- 2013 with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, this year's music is a bit different.
+
Orgone celebrates their latest album with a live set at Amoeba Music, Hollywood - and kicks off their Annual Fat Tuesday festivities -- and that format is a tradition there.
+
Mardi Gras DJ's kick-off at 3 pm and Orgone plays live at 4 pm. Followed by the Fat Tuesday parade / procession celebrating the musical culture and heritage of New Orleans - complete with floats, beads, masks and fun for all. You'll be able to buy the new Orgone CDs, "New You" (Part 1 & 2), and the band will sign copies after their performance and the parade.
+
A portion of the day's proceeds will be donated to "Tipitina's Foundation" and the "New Orleans Musicians' Clinic" to support the great works they do with artists in and around New Orleans.
+
Now, about Orgone:
Pronounced with a long second “O,” the Los Angeles band Orgone is dedicated to heavy, raw, adrenaline-fueled funk and sweat-dripping soul. With a core rhythm section of close friends and self-taught musicians steeped in local DJ culture, Orgone has spent the last decade "expanding their roster and evolving a sound rooted in old school respect but pulsing with the force of the new millennium." Orgone has become a staple on the festival circuit, "while gaining a reputation among fellow artists as one of the baddest go-to backing bands on the planet. Always evolving musically and cosmically, Orgone continues to connect with kindred musical spirits throughout the universe with relentless touring and the upcoming release of their fifth full-length album."
+
Starting-out as an instrumental five piece by friends with a love of funk records, Orgone cut their teeth putting their own gritty takes on cuts by the Meters, Booker T. & the MGs, Grant Green and Funkadelic among others. In 2002, the band independently released "Orgone," a collection of tough, stripped-down, funk instrumentals that Relix Magazine called “intoxicating” and that quickly became a favorite of die-hard, funk fans. Orgone solidified that underground respect in 2006, adding a powerful horn section and releasing their second album, "Bacano," a set of all-original, cold-blooded funk gems in the classic vein of War and Mandrill with improved, warm, organic production that matched the evolution of the band’s sound. The release of their cover of “Funky Nassau” on both 7” and 12” became a ubiquitous spin on the dance floor, inspiring a club-edit by DJ Danny Krivit and paving the way for "The Killion Floor" in 2007, Orgone’s first full-length album for Ubiquity Records.
+
Orgone continued their evolution when the critically-acclaimed "Cali Fever" was released in 2010. "The album was musical chameleon, shifting between West Coast cool, New Orleans grit, Lagos afrobeat, and heavy Mothership funk, taking, in the words of Dusty Groove America, 'a rough, rugged, and uber soulful live funk vibe into a deeper and even livelier realm!'," says Amoeba.
+
Released later the same year, an all-instrumental album, "The Killion Vaults," showcased Orgone’s growing skill behind the soundboard and why their home studio, Killion, is becoming a favorite recording site for many acts. Orgone’s roster and sound continue to grow . And there are ample opportunities to catch Orgone on stage. Touring almost non-stop since the release of "Cali Fever," including 288 shows in 2011 alone, Orgone has evolved into an incendiary live act, both as a headliner and opener for acts that include the Roots, Al Green, Gil Scott-Heron, Rebelution, Galactic, Ozomatli, Snoop Dogg, Thievery Corporation, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Groundation, and Aaron Neville.
+
Amoeba adds, "Whether playing a club show or slots at national festivals like Bonnaroo, All Good, New Orleans JazzFest, High Sierra, Bear Creek, SXSW, moe.down, Mountain Jam, Waterfront Blues Festival, Jam Cruise 10 and many others, Orgone is a live funk juggernaut that can do it all, weaving seamlessly between gut-bucket nastiness, afrobeat, disco/house, and classic covers, creating a sweaty, dynamic dance experience."
+
With their critical success and tight, touring chops, Orgone is a sought-after backing band for studio sessions. The band has flourished in the studio, appearing on the 2011 multiple Grammy-winning Cee Lo Green track, “Fool For Love” and major recordings by Alicia Keys (“Teenage Love Affair, “Wreckless Love”), Estelle (“Pretty Please”), Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and Anthony Hamilton. Orgone’s musicians have also collectively and individually toured and played with Booker T Jones, The Pharcyde, Breakestra, Keb Mo, Plantlife, Macy Grey, Pharoahe Monch, Too Short, Brett Dennan, Slick Rick, and Bun B.
+
So, you can see why we said this is musically quite different from what you experienced here last year. It's free, so if you go, go early.

These two singer-songwriters are surely familiar to you: ERIC BRACE is the leader of LAST TRAIN HOME, a celebrated roots-rock-alt-everything band. PETER COOPER is a sweet-singing songwriter with three solo records to his name, who is also the chief music writer for Nashville's daily newspaper, “The Tennessean.” His newest solo release, “Opening Day,” is a work of a man at the peak of his substantial talents. The boys will be singing a bunch of songs from it, and a bunch of songs from their latest duo record, “The Comeback Album,” a fine collection of thoughtful, whimsical, exquisitely-wrought, and downright excellent tunes.

Together, Eric and Peter harmonize, tell stories, pick their guitars, and force you to ponder life's bigger mysteries, like: * Why was Phil Rizzuto crying in the broadcast booth? * How many bones are there in the human body? * Why won't Peter take his boy to the circus? * What's so dismal about Dismal Hollow? * Who is Warren Mihachik?
