Karaoke—a Japanese word that translates into English as “empty orchestra” — is always criticized in the Guide as “the death of vocal music. Nevertheless, it is everywhere. It can accompany anyone on a smartphone, a tablet, on YouTube, in taxis or “on demand” through cable or satellite providers.

A roundtable discussion, participatory karaoke event and week-long exhibition will explore karaoke as a technology, an aesthetic and a participatory cultural practice. Bobby Abate and Lynne Chan aka New Sound Karaoke and performance artist Amy Von Harrington connect karaoke to vaudeville and LGBT performance practices. Visual artist and writer Jibade-Khalil Huffman explores karaoke as a gateway to a new literary formalism. The exhibition also includes documentation of live, politically motivated karaoke performances, such as Valerie Tevere and Angel Nevarez’s “Another Protest Song: Karaoke with a Message.” The opening on November 5 promises to be a wild and irreverent evening of conversation and performance. Herb Pedersen on guitar and vocals is an American musician, guitarist, banjo player, and singer-songwriter who has played a variety of musical styles over the past forty years. Pedersen is a member of the Desert Rose Band, and he has fronted his own band called the Laurel Canyon Ramblers. He has also worked with the Pine Valley Boys, Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, Smokey Grass Boys, Old and in the Way, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tony Rice, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne, John Denver, John Jorgenson, and Leland Sklar.

Tom Sauber, on fiddle, banjo, and vocals, is a native of Southern California who has helped bring authentic traditional music to the film industry. In 1980, along with Ry Cooder and David Lindley, he played the music for the motion picture “The Long Riders.” He has also appeared in “Bound for Glory,” “Geronimo,” and numerous TV movies and series.

PATRICK SAUBER (son of old time player Tom Sauber) has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good solid Scruggs-style 5-string banjo and mandolin, i.e. Bill Monroe and more current styles. For such a young player, it will be interesting to see where he carries this talent. He also sings all the needed parts in the good trio and quartet numbers.

Bill Bryson comes from a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled of the upright bass players in the business, he's been with such great groups as: The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. He's a wonderful lead singer, and is one of the best baritones in demand today. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

The New Christy Minstrels featured the great BARRY McGUIRE on some of their biggest hits. But, Barry, citing health issues, is retiring from his “Trippin’ the ’60s” show that he’s been performing with JOHN YORK (former BYRD), and it seems, really retiring. There are just two final appearances by Barry McGuire with The New Christy Minstrels, on Nov 2 in Cerritos, and on Nov 16 in Palm Desert. Info and ticket links for both are below.
