The USC Thornton Opera and USC Thornton Symphony present The English Cat, a curious and delightful opera by famed 20th-century composer Hans Werner Henze, featuring a libretto by controversial British playwright Edward Bond. Based on a short story from Scenes of the Public and Private Lives of Animals by Honoré de Balzac, The English Cat explores class division through the eyes of a group of bourgeois cats who form the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Rats. The great British tabby, Lord Puff, is called on to approve of his arranged fiancée, Minette. Soon after the meeting, Minette is discovered on a rooftop with Tom, a stray cat with whom she has fallen in love. Minette is tried and convicted for breach of promise by a jury of birds. When Tom falls for Minette’s sister, Babette, Minette gives her blessing while being tied in a sack to be thrown into the Thames River.

HERB PEDERSEN is an alumnus of legendary bands The Dillards, Country Gazette, The Desert Rose Band, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, Old & In The Grey, Chris Hillman with Tony & Larry Rice, Here Today, and Vern & Ray. He also played with The Foggy Mountain Boys for a time, subbing for Earl Scruggs back in the late 60s. Herb is a guitar wizard, a great singer and a gifted songwriter.

BILL BRYSON has, over the past 40 odd years, contributed his talents to some of the best bands in the business, such as Bluegrass Etc., The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Desert Rose Band, Country Gazette and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers. He’s not only a great upright bass player, but also an accomplished old time banjo player and an amazing singer/ songwriter. Oh, and he’s pretty funny too.

TOM SAUBER has been in the forefront of the traditional old-time music scene for more years than he cares to admit. An accomplished fiddle and 5-string banjo player, he has appeared on countless recording projects and movie soundtracks, and has a healthy teaching schedule to boot. Tom’s love of the music has brightened up many sessions and performances with people like Alice Gerrard, Mike Seeger, Dirk Powell and Mark Graham.

PATRICK SAUBER, Tom’s son, came to essentially the same musical background as his dad. He’s one of those astounding multi-instrumentalists who feels as at home on the 5-string as he does on the mandolin and guitar. Patrick works occasionally with Laurie Lewis, the Bladerunners and now with Loafers’ Glory, adding a punch musically & vocally that everybody’s talking about.

Toulouse Engelhardt’s New CD Mind Gardens Comes Alive at Alvas
Twelve-string, finger-style guitarist Toulouse Engelhardt returns to Alvas Showroom Nov. 21 for a concert supporting his new CD Mind Gardens.
Engelhardt’s Mind Gardens is a work of sublime beauty and grace. Each track takes one into the world of acidic neo-folk music. He subtitles this recording as “13 Novelettes of Space, Time and Contemplation” is not as odd as it may sound. It is a musical story played with a dramatic whimsy of surrealist tone poems, which have a beginning, middle and end.
His opening track, “Nierika,” is a textured piece that places the listener in a contemplative mood for a journey to your mind. Where in the“Theme to The First Annual Bluebelly Lizard Roundup,” the 12-string maestropicks up the pace with a delightful frenzied round up of critters that one could only imagine.
Track 10, “Lady of The Light” is about the tale of a lighthouse keeper’s wife who died or a woman who committed suicide along the cliff’s at the Point Vicente Lighthouse. There are various stories on the sightings of this woman in a white dress with long, wet, black hair. Here we have a song with emotion and wonder.
Engelhardt as “The Segovia of Surf” doesn’t fail us with his version of Dick Dale’s “The Wedge.” Its wild Gypsy rhythms cutting through the air like a surfer switching back and forth on the waves along the Palos Verdes coast. Totally bitchin’ bro!
The closing track is a duet with an alto flute, “Dialogue With An English Rill” is a gorgeous song dedicated to his British bride.
Mind Gardens is a sonic treat for acoustic guitar lovers, Engelhardt will be bringing this album to life at Alvas Showroom on Nov. 21.
