EXTRA EVENTS this week... July 30-Aug 4, 2013

.
It's an outstanding week for BLUEGRASS, with the show on Tuesday with RUN BOY RUN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena (fully described in Saturday's complete edition), and the best outdoor bluegrass concert of the summer with LAURIE LEWIS and JOHN REISCHMAN, which happens Friday at the lovely Ford Amphitheatre (across from the Hollywood Bowl). That Friday show is detailed in this "Extra" edition of the Guide, so don't miss it.
.
But everything else that's happening is not in here. Only the ADDED events that are not in Saturday's edition are in this one.
.
So, whoa up, thar, pard. That latest FULL edition, published early Saturday, has many events reaching through this week and waaaay into the future (including events for TONIGHT, Monday) so it is VERY MUCH still relevant and useful. But additional events that strayed-in to the ol' corral (as always) weren't around to get branded then and cut into the herd -- and we don't want you to miss anything.
.
Hence, here's this lil' ol' Monday update has ONLY those late/extra events. (Surely it's the first of who-knows-how-many fresh news blasts this week).
.
So, here ya go, with just the late extras...

LATE ADDITION...
Thu, Aug 1, in Venice:
7-10 pm  "CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH" redux on the anniversary date of George Harrison's landmark original in 1971, is a charity benefit at The Talking Stick, 1411 Lincoln Bl, Venice.
+
Four decades ago, it was famine exacerbated by war. Now it's economic exploitation by rich Western corporate moguls who employ workers in dangerously unsafe workplaces. The results should have been preventable because they should have been predictable. Instead, the best we can do is help those in need after they have suffered horrifying tragedy.
+
Thus, tonight's "BENEFIT FOR FAMILIES OF VICTIMS OF THE RANA PLAZE BUILDING COLLAPSE & THE TAZREEN FASHION FACTORY FIRE." On this exact 42nd anniversary date of the original "Concert for Bangladesh," the proceeds this time support victims of the deathtrap buildings that housed garment-making sweatshops for top designer-label brands sold in the US.
+
The multi-artist evening will include highlights from the original concert, performed by host ROSS ALTMAN and guest artists that include Eric Charles, Dennis Davis, Jeff Gold, Andy Manoff, Carol McArthur, Smokey Miles, and Michael Simmons.
+
Americans pay a lot for clothes and shoes with trendy labels. Bangladeshis make sub-poverty-level wages to produce these products, often in unhealthy and physically dangerous workplaces.
+
Questions about the event? Email Greygoosemusic@aol.com
+
Suggested donation to attend the concert is $10 for the benefit, plus a one-drink or one-food-item purchase to support the venue.

LATE ADDITION...
Thu, Aug 1, in Altadena:
8 pm  MICHAEL KOPPY, a respected and acclaimed singer-songwriter, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Michael says he's bringing FRANK LINDAMOOD, "an old pal who’s coming all the way from the Florida swamps."
+
Michael Koppy’s recent CD, "Ashmore’s Store," was named “The Best Album of 2012” by Country Music People magazine—the critic going on to write “and ‘All in the Timing,' is the best song this critic has heard in the past 30 years.”
+
Michael says, "Other writers have called the album 'stunning,' 'revolutionary,' and 'unprecedented in the entire history of popular music,'" though he does not identify the sources.
+
Another cut on the album,“Nineteen Years Old,” was the Number One Song on several South Carolina commercial AM stations for nine straight weeks earlier this year. Michael says, "It’s the true story of a love that never died, told him by the old man who lived it and loved her, over a couple of beers on a rainy afternoon in a little dive bar in Birmingham,Alabama."
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says of Koppy, "He writes songs that actually say something—be they off-the-wall and playful, perhaps think 'Randy Newman writes for Hank Williams Jr.,' or serious and substantive."
+
His current tour started in Canada on July 18 and ends in Honolulu August 10.
+
Michael accompanies himself on six-string acoustic guitar, nine-string guitar, and harmonica. More at www.MichaelKoppy.com
+
PLUS,
FRANK LINDAMOOD has been called "an authentic and unaffected link to a different time in American music." A regular at the "Florida State Folk Festival," he lives in a place he built by hand (and without indoor plumbing), at the end of a dirt road deep in the turpentine piney woods of the Florida Panhandle, not too far from a little crossroads town called Sopchoppy.
+
A legitimate throwback and connection to an earlier era in American music, Frank’s original songs are mostly either religious-themed or about actual events. This will be his first time playing more than a hundred miles from home—and quite possibly the only time you’ll ever be able to see and hear him on the Pacific Coast. Frank plays banjo, guitar, and resonator guitar. More in him at www.reverbnation.com/FrankLindamood

Fri, Aug 2;
not music but worth knowing,
in Topanga:
7:30 pm "FIRST FRIDAY FILM NIGHT" sponsored by the Topanga Peace Alliance presents "The Invisible War" at the new Topanga Library, 122 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga 90290.
+
"The Invisible War" is an Academy Award nominee in 2012 and one of Time Magazine’s "Ten Best Films of the Year." From Oscar®-and Emmy®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick,"The Invisible War" is a groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military.
+
The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem. Today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 22,800 violent sex crimes in the military in 2011. 20% of all active-duty female soldiers are sexually assaulted. Female soldiers aged 18 to 21 accounted for more than half of the victims.
+
Focusing on the powerfully emotional stories of rape victims, "The Invisible War" is a moving indictment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. It also features hard-hitting interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress that reveal the perfect storm of conditions that exist for rape in the military, its long-hidden history, and what can be done to bring about much-needed change.
+
The Topanga Peace Alliance screening features a vegetarian snack potluck (no alcohol) at 7:15 pm, with the film screening at 7:30 pm. A discussion follows the screening.
+
Parking is available under the library and the event is ADA compliant with elevator access and headphones for those that need a little extra volume.

LAURIE LEWIS is considered “one of the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time” by the International Bluegrass Music Association. The Grammy® award-winning singer-songwriter uses traditional instruments and her command of the genre to create a sound that is often contemporary.

Festival TICKETS / EATS:
+
A very reasonable $13 (advance purchase price) gets you a General Admission . But that's ONLY a general admission, no crawfish to eat, and you're on your own for food. (Advance online purchase price; it's $15 on-site.)
+
But, as good as the music and general hoop-la are, you don't want to settle for just getting in to this festival. Read on.
+
For $28, you get a One-Day General Admission with a "CRAWFISH FEAST" served by Bristol Farms, and it includes 2 to 2-1/4 lbs. of fresh live steamed crawfish, red baby potatoes, corn on the cob and dipping sauce. (Advance online purchase price; it's $35 on-site until it's sold-out.)
+
For $35, you get a One-Day General Admission, plus the "CRAW BUCKET FEAST," served by Bristol Farms. This feast includes 3 lbs. of fresh live steamed crawfish, red baby potatoes, corn on the cob, and dipping sauce. (Advance online purchase price; it's $48 on-site until it's sold-out.)
+
HOW MUCH FOOD IS IT?
Crawfish Feast platter or Craw Bucket Feast, it's A LOT of food. And if you want to get serious, it takes a lot of delectably enjoyable time to eat it. What does that mean? A parent and a young kid can joyfully share a "Crawfish Feast" platter. Two adults can happily share a "Craw Bucket," and a couple with a young child can buy one admission-with-bucket and just two additional admissions. A dating couple could share a "feast" platter and hit the food court for more and different cuisine (see below), or a couple can fill-up sharing a bucket, spending at least an hour-and-a-half busily eating it. But if teenagers are involved and you expect to share a platter or even a bucket, they will develop a sudden love for crawfish and devour everything, leaving you an 18-inch high pile of shells and nothing else.  Finally, if you have your own crab / lobster cracking tools, take them. Crawfish have thinner shells and are smaller, but tools can make it easier. So plan a bit, and this will be a highlight of your summer.
+
Special admission discounts and packages are available, but only at the festival's website.
+
In addition to the crawfish, there is an extensive "International Food Court," featuring New Orleans inspired cuisine, Café du Monde-style chicory coffee and beignets, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, alligator-on-a-stick, catfish, and more.
+
We must emphasize: to assure that you will enjoy CRAWFISH at the CRAWFISH FESTIVAL, you need to purchase it in advance, both to save a lot of money and to sure you get yours. It's wonderful, everybody knows it, and it sells-out.
+
The festival is family-friendly, and runs Saturday, noon–11 pm, and Sunday, noon–10 pm.

WORKSHOP for ARTISTS,
in Altadena:
4 pm "GUITAR WORKSHOP: Developing a Powerful Practice Routine" with master guitarist and composer KEN BONFIELD at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Bonfield leads a 90-minute workshop for guitarists and musicians of any level. This is an in-depth look at the routines and strategies he has employed to overcome injury and learn new playing techniques. He includes playing in a multitude of alternate tunings, playing slide guitar, and most recently playing 11-string Harp Guitar.
+
All mastered without lessons.
+
Bonfield will share with you how you, too, can be your own best teacher. In this workshop,Bonfield will show guitarists, or musicians on any instrument, how to set reasonable goals while sharing time-tested approaches to daily practice that will have you reaching your goals faster than ever.
+
If you feel like learning anything new is a tough slog, or if you've found yourself plateaued in your playing, this workshop msy be just the thing for you. While you won't go home with a cool new lick, you will leave with the information to develop a plan to learn whatever it is YOU want to learn.
+
He adds, "As a bonus, after you've adopted the Bonfield approach to practice for 30 days, there's a great chance you'll be playing what you've already been playing better than you ever."
+
Bonfield does this 90-minute afternoon workshop, and an evening concert at 7 pm. (See 7 pm listing.)
+
The Workshop fee is $25; tickets for the concert are $20 and include the new CD. Combined tickets for both the concert and workshop are $40 and include Bonfield's new album, "Legacy."
.
++++++
.
LATE ADDITION...
Sat, Aug 3, in Altadena:
7 pm "ARTISTRY OF THE GUITAR" with Boston-based American Fingerstyleguitarist master guitarist Ken Bonfield, is a solo concert at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
"Legacy," Bonfield's fifth solo CD and his 7th overall, is a blend of old and new songs performed entirely solo on a variety of instruments he brings on the road. They include his newly-acquired custom Carruth guitar (http://www.alcarruthluthier.com); a 2007 baritone guitar that Bonfield likens to a plucked cello; a 2010 11-string Harp Guitar that has a standard guitar's 6 strings plus an additional 5 'sub-bass' strings that allow Bonfield to play bass and guitar at the same time; and his 2012 Small Jumbo Carruth 'Green' guitar made entirely from sustainable North American hardwoods. He is an advocate of sustainable woods, like walnut, cherry, persimmon, and maple, as well as making use of salvaged wood, such as the Redwood top on his guitar acquired in the mid 1970s from a 12-foot-tall stump -- the tree itself was originally 'harvested' in the late 1800's.
+
Thus, the album name, "Legacy," has meaning. Produced by New England master engineer Tom Eaton, it was fully funded through a Kickstarter "crowd funding" campaign by Bonfield's fans.
+
In the spirit of the way it was funded, everyone who pays for a concert ticket gets a free CD. As venue impresario Bob Stane says, "That's a pretty good deal."
+
Bonfield does a 90-minute afternoon workshop at 4 pm and an evening concert at 7 pm, both here today. (See 4 pm listing.)
+
Bonfield's 90-minute workshop for guitarists and musicians of any level on Saturday afternoon is called "Developing a Powerful Practice Routine," and it's at 4 pm.
+
Tickets for the workshop-only are $25. Tix for the concert-only are $20, and include Bonfield's new CD "Legacy."  Combined tickets for both the concert and workshop are $40 and include Bonfield's new album, "Legacy."

Sun, Aug 4, in Altadena:
7 pm THE UKELELE ORCHESTRA OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, a big outfit with small instruments, plus THE SINGER & THE SONGWRITER duo, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Start thinking "Alt Uke" and get ready for something entirely different: The Ukelele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere. Direct from Silverlake and locally grown, there's nothing quite like this 15-20 ukelele “wall of sound” -- at least not in the Southern California area of the Western Hemisphere.
+
But don’t show up expecting a repertoire of lilting Hawaiian melodies. Instead, be prepared to hear unique arrangements and mash-ups, with songs ranging from Radiohead, and David Bowie, to yes, even Led Zeppelin and Dolly Parton.
+
Plus,
THE SINGER & THE SONGWRITER, the original duo of RACHEL GARCIA & THU TRAN. "The Singer and The Songwriter is an L.A.-based duo that blends folk and jazz to create a catchy, modern sound inspired by vintage styles." They have played at The House of Blues, "The Eagle Rock Music Festival," and Silverlake Lounge, and are currently working on their debut full-length album. Oh, and this original duo are former members of The Ukelele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Join the resurgence of the ukulele, the happiest instrument in all the hemispheres. See what the buzz is all about this group. Just show up – and you will leave way happier!"

MORE is on the way. First, we must equip the drovers with new riatas and assemble them in their chaps to load the baying cattle into the stock cars and feed and water the dogies. Then we must assemble the loaded stock cars into the train, and coal and water the locomotive, and call the engineer and conductor, and attach the caboose. See what we do for your musical needs? And you thought we just got to blow the whistle, ring the big brass bell, and wave.

Wonderful description of the background and purpose of Concert for Bangladesh 2013 in Acoustic Americana. Thank you so much for your eloquent and informative summary of the labor conditions garment workers endure, and often perish from. You have been so supportive and helpful I am deeply moved by your contributions in publicizing this benefit. Thank you!

Best,

Ross Altman
