SPECIAL "WSM MIDNITE JAMBOREE," ONLINE SATURDAY
MIKE SCOTT to host, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of “Grand Ole Opry Star” Ernest Tubb
(February 13, 2014) - Rural Rhythm Records announced today from Nashville that recording artist Mike Scott will guest-host the long-running WSM "Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree" on Saturday, February 15, from the Ernest Tubb Record Shop on Music Valley Drive in Nashville. The show is done with a live audience at the Texas Troubadour Theatre, broadcast on WSM radio, and goes-out worldwide at www.wsmOnline.com.
The show has been on the air more than 60 years, and is second in longevity only to the "Grand Ole Opry."
MIKE SCOTT & THE NASHVILLE BAND includes Carl Jackson, Scott Napier, Heath VanWinkle, Kim Gardner and Steve Day.
They will perform along with special guests CARL JACKSON, LARRY CORDLE & VAL STORY, plus JOE MULLINS & THE RADIO RAMBLERS.
Saturday night’s show is part of a series celebrating Ernest Tubb.
“I was honored to have known Ernest Tubb when I moved to Nashville to work for JIM & JESSE & THE VIRGINIA BOYS at The Grand Ole Opry in 1983 and later attended his funeral with Jim & Jesse in 1984. This date also marks the '10th Memorial' of the loss of my Dad, Charles Virgil Scott (6/23/31 - 2/15/04),” said Mike Scott.
A lot of good programming still is not available everywhere. Mike Scott is seen by millions of TV viewers each week during prime-time on RFD-TV, which reaches 72 million households, though almost none in Southern California. Mike performs with RONNIE RENO & THE RENO TRADITION on RFD's "Reno's Old Time Music Show." In addition, he is the host of the new music TV series "Behind the Dream" ™ currently airing on BlueHighways TV.
Mike Scott’s current album "Home Sweet Home (Civil War Era Songs)" was released in 2013, and with the ongoing 150th anniversary of the central event of American history, the album's profile remains high. Two of its songs will be performed in upcoming episodes of "Reno's Old Time Music Show" during the new season, airing this spring.
Scott, producer and performer on "Home Sweet Home," assembled an all-star group of musicians to pay tribute to the popular parlor songs, minstrel songs and marching songs from the era, some still known to us as traditional standards. Joining Scott on the album are awarding winning players Adam Steffey, Rob Ickes, Bryan Sutton, Aubrey Haynie, Tim Stafford, Mike Compton, Ben Isaacs, Jeff Taylor and Scott Miller.
Will Saturday's "WSM Midnite Jamboree" bring any of that mid-nineteenth century music because Mike Scott is hosting? Possibly. But you can bet you'll hear fine interpretations of the great tunes of Ernest Tubb.
Catch the show at www.wsmOnline.com, Saturday, from 10-11:30 pm, Pacific time (Midnight-1:30 am Nashville time). You can tune-in starting at 5 pm Pacific for three editions of the "Grand Ole Opry," as well.

Every corner of American life, it seems, has felt the influence of Pete Seeger. Be it cultural, environmental, labor, civil rights or international conflict, the ways of this devotedly simple folk singer have moved countless hearts and hands toward action and helped shape our modern world. If you've ever picked up a banjo or guitar or opened your throat to deliver a heartfelt message, then you are part of the multitude who shares in the Seeger heritage.
+
A diverse roster of L.A.'s finest folk musicians will gather in tribute to the spirit and songs Pete Seeger wrote, popularized and inspired. Artists representing country, Celtic, ranchera and other branches of the folk tree will honor his legacy and impact. During the gathering, we’ll encourage audience members to sing along and add their voices to this celebratory event. We believe Pete Seeger's passion for justice – as a hard-working husband and parent, humble troubadour, engaged citizen, and co-conspirator with Nature - will continue to light the path for all who believe in the transcendent power of a simple song.

Stoney Spring is a band featuring the three original Hawks: Rob Waller on vocals, Paul Lacques on Telecaster and lap steel, and songwriter Anthony Lacques on piano, drums, and acoustic six string. Stoney Spring's debut album, “Right On Heliotrope!” has been getting rave reviews and is about to hit the radio. Anthony, the composer of Hawks songs like “Hecker Pass,” “Sexy Vacation,” “Mystery Drug,” and “A Dog Can Break Your Heart Too,” really lets his freak flag fly with Stoney Spring. Here the songs, which might be described as psychedelic art-folk, range in subject matter from a tragic love story set in a 1975 classroom, to a philosophical attack on the legacy of Steve Jobs. Not to be missed. And stay tuned for a record release party. The album is the eighth release by the Hawks' Western Seeds Records. You can listen to and buy the CD at: www.cdbaby.com/cd/stoneyspring. It's also available through Amazon or iTunes. And if you dig what you hear, be sure to like the band on Facebook:

Here's what the critics are saying about Stoney Spring:
+
“Right On Heliotrope!...is wholly original in ways not unlike that of Captain Beefheart, Harry Partch or Shuggie Otis. You know, an instinctive originality, unhindered by cultural or aesthetic archetype, just blessed with some kind of really strong radar…It’s like hearing the truth, unvarnished, for the first time, and feeling shocked, like you’re experiencing the taste of an apple after subsisting on PopTarts your whole previous life...Weary, cynical and sad, too…but bracing, exhilarating, even.” ~ LA Weekly/Bluefat critic John Payne.
+
"Stoney Spring kick all the grimness out of dystopic anarchy with their roadhouse musicianship and fuck-it-all humor. Alex Chilton might've made an album like this if he'd lived longer and sung lower." ~ Greg Burk, MetalJazz.com.
+
"Stoney Spring understands the essentially desperate times we face. Yet, despair is not the essence of their music. Instead, one finds a joyful challenge to the ever expanding matrix. Political without the abrasiveness so often associated with that term, insightful without being preachy, and, most importantly, enjoyable, this first disc from Stoney Spring is worth checking out."
+
About I SEE HAWKS IN L.A.

"I See Hawks is the city's premier roots band. Their sound is pure and progressive in spirit, with songs about hippies' children, fatal attractions and other meaty topics." ~ Richard Cromelin, L.A. Times.
+
"The Hawks have updated Southern California country rock. Their music is sinewy yet poetic--more nihilistic than decadent, with an urban-desert poetry all its own." ~ Richard Gehr, Village Voice.

+
KIM ANGELIS & JOSEPH are an award-winning virtuoso violin and guitar duo from Astoria, OR. Inspired by Eastern European Gypsy and flamenco traditions, the combination has taken them to Asia, South America, and much of the United States.
+
Len Atkins, a concert presenter in Seaview, WA, wrote of the duo, “...inspired performance to a packed house, perfectly accompanied on the guitar by her husband Josef...Kim’s fiery performance of Gypsy inspired music, her complete mastery of the violin, held an audience spellbound, till they leapt to their feet in standing ovation. Kim IS her music! Tuck a violin under her chin and this otherwise slight and shy artist becomes a powerful, scintillating dancing presence, somewhere on the continuum between the spirituality of a fiddler on the roof and the ecstatic mysticism of a Sufi dancing.”
+
Around Valentine's Day, nothing is more romantic than Gypsy-inspired music. For much more information, song samples, and links to videos, please visit www.skysong.com. The show ranges from passionate, exciting and energetic,to achingly beautiful, delighting a wide range of audiences (especially around Valentine's Day!). Filmmakers, dancers, and Olympic gymnasts have used Kim’s music. Her critically acclaimed CDs have been distributed throughout the world, with Violin Voyager residing on Taiwan’s Billboard charts for ten years! In July 2007,Kim’s composition “Zingaro!” A world class violin virtuoso and composer who has transcended artistic boundaries - a “Gypsy Primas” blazing a melodic trail through the territories of world and classical music. From Alaska to Ancud (Chile), and over the Pacific Ocean to Asia, Kim Angelis has enthralled international concert audiences.
+
Her music was highlighted on NBC’s world-wide coverage of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and it continues to accompany and inspire elite gymnasts and dancers the world over. In July 2007, her song, “Zingaro!” won Global Rhythm Magazine’s international song contest; she is also the recepient of two ASCAP “Plus” Awards for her contributions to American music. Accompanying Kim will be her husband, Josef, who plays fiery flamenco-inspired guitar in the tradition of Manitas de Plata. The combined musical vision of Kim Angelis and Josef is truly exciting and inspirational.
+
Bob Slater, Director of the acclaimed San Juan Capistrano Multicultural Concert Series, said, “Kim plays fiddle in a gypsy style: full of flare -but not the flare you see in so many performers, where it's polished and shiny (not that there's anything wrong with that) - no, it was more the flare of a fire burning within Kim's soul, and it was quite stunning. The audience, OUR audience, literally leapt to their feet and cheered, and applauded, and praised this woman. And it went on, and on, and on...quite possibly the longest applause I've ever heard and definitely the longest on record for a performer’s first song...I wondered if they'd let her play anything else! Eventually, of course they did. Kim is a soulful, spirited performer who deserves all the applause she gets, whether it be here … or in the gigantic state concert halls of Taiwan where Kim is an icon.”

7:30-10:30 pm BLUES NIGHT: BERNIE PEARL’S CD release concert with Champagne reception, many prominent guest musicians, and blues jam, all to celebrate blues guitarist Bernie Pearl's newest recording, "Take Your Time," at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center, 4305 Degnan Bl, Los Angeles 90008; 310-462-1439.
+
The concert will feature some excting combos and ensembles. The CD also features duets with renowned diva Barbara Morrison.
+
The idea of recording the blues together had its beginnings when Pearl and Morrison met working on an all African-American rendition of Garcia-Lorca's "Yerma" at the Odyssey Showcase in 1981. The two blues devotees found that they had a mutual friend and mentor in sax great Eddie Vinson, and after over three decades they were able to dedicate their blues work together to Mr. Cleanhead Vinson.
+
"Take Your Time" features L.A. native Pearl and his musicians on 14 tracks, including three duets with Morrison. The spare and largely acoustic arrangements include Pearl originals, as well as covers of lesser-know material from an impressive variety of blues stylists: Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Boy Crudup, Mercy Dee Walton, Fred MacDowell, among others.
+
The evening starts with a 7:30-8 pm champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception in the atrium. At 8:15, the focus moves to the theater stage where Pearl, Morrison and the band will perform selections from the CD. An All-Star Blues Jam follows at 9:30, featuring sizzling New Orleans guitar master Big Terry DeRouen, and L.A.'s greatest real-deal blues singer, Jamie "Blues Boy" Powell. 8 pm THE TANNAHILL WEAVERS bring their “Mystical and rollicking Highlander's Celtic music” to the Pasadena Folk Music Series (formerly Caltech Folk Music Series) in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) on the Caltech campus in Pasadena, Park free in either lot at the south end of Michigan Av, S off Del Mar, S of the 210 Fwy, in Pasadena.
+
The Tannahill Weavers are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better...yet continue to do just that.
+
The Tannahills have turned their acoustic excitement loose on audiences with an electrifying effect. They have that unique combination of traditional melodies, driving rhythmic accompaniment, and rich vocals that make their performances unforgettable. Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill. The Tannies have been trailblazers for Scottish music, and their tight harmonies and powerful, inventive arrangements have won them fans from beyond the folk and Celtic music scenes. In the late 18th and early 19th century Scotland was in a turmoil of change. Highlanders were being driven from their lands and into the burgeoning Lowland factory systems. This brought two quite distinct cultures together, the mystic Celtic culture of the North and the old Anglo/Scots culture of the Lowlands. They were married by the double barreled shotgun of necessity and the Industrial Revolution. But this forced union brought forth a cultural heritage which, thanks to people like Robert Burns and Robert Tannahill, outlasted the worst of the Industrial Revolution. It married the mystic beauty of the Celtic music to the coarse, brawling, but vitally human music, poetry and ballads of the Lowlands. It is precisely this strangely moving yet lustily stirring quality that the Tannahill Weavers have captured in their arrangements of the traditional music and songs of Scotland. All of their material is traditional, but as good musicians should, they have transformed it and brought it into the modern world, vitally alive and kicking.

"These guys are a bunch of heroes every time they go on tour in the States." ~ Garrison Keillor
