Monday Music Scene & More ~ Feb 10, 2014

.
Ahh, yes. What’s the “more” in today's title?
'Tis Theatre! Read on, McDuff!

February 10th in History…

Today is the birthday of:
√  Olympic swimming champ MARK SPITZ, and
√  Musician CHAPPELL HOLT.

√  And it’s the birthday of religiously-motivated TV political commentator GLENN BECK.

It is also the officially-proclaimed “Umbrella Day,” just missing “Toothache Day,” and we’re sure some will find that calendric convergence cause to chuckle.

Mon, Feb 10, in Altadena:
8 pm  RICHARD BERMAN and SANDY CASH play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
RICHARD BERMAN? Here’s an impressive introduction: "This man has the gift." ~ the late Utah Phillips, legendary figure in American folk music. Utah said that after hearing Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter Richard Berman sing at the Kerrville Folk Festival's Ballad Tree in 1992.
+
Richard has used that gift to write insightful songs that range from the humorous (as in his “Monopoly,” to be featured in the upcoming documentary “Under the Boardwalk”) to the poignant, to songs of requited love. Along with his own life experiences and those of people close to him, Richard has drawn inspiration from sources as diverse as the Old and New Testaments, Greek mythology, and oral histories from the Civil Rights movement.
+
He has won numerous songwriting contests around the country, beginning with the 1992 Napa Valley Folk Festival. His six CDs have been on many folk DJs’ lists as top releases in their respective years. His “Love, Work and Play,” and “Dreamer,” were chosen “One of the Best Folk Albums” of 1996 and 1998, respectively by Rich Warren, host of "The Midnight Special" on WFMT in Chicago – the longest continuously-running folk radio show in the country. Of his most recent CD, “Now and Then” (2008), Bill Hahn of WFDU noted, “One word for this CD would be ‘Brilliant’.”
+
Richard will be accompanied on stage by DAN LEVITT and GARY LYNCH, two wonderful Southern California musicians. Dan plays a unique style of banjo that has the instrument sounding lush and harp-like. His sound can be heard on his newly released and widely praised CD “Fancy That!” Gary Lynch plays numerous instruments and sings in his Ventura County-based band, “KG,” but will be confined to providing his excellent bass accompaniment and an occasional vocal harmony for Richard’s songs.
+
Plus…
SANDY CASH, whom Richard introduces as “a wonderful songwriter and performer living in Israel.” Christine Lavin says, "Sandy Cash has impeccable taste...a gorgeous, rich voice [and] an ear for clever lyrics...I'm so happy to know that she is out there singing songs like these in her part of the world. Lucky them!" American-born, Israel-based singer-songwriter Sandy Cash is one of Israel’s most popular English-language entertainers. With a professional background in both theater and opera, Sandy’s songs employ drama and humor to describe her life as an American immigrant to Israel, and as a citizen of the changing and challenging Middle East. At the same time, Sandy’s songs shine a light on the life of a mom trying to raise relatively sane children in a crazy part of the world.
+
Sandy’s most recent disc, :Voices From the Other Side,” was named one of the “Top 25 Folk Releases of 2012” by the hosts of NPR affiliate radio show “The Back Porch.” Bob McKenzie, writing for Soundbytes, Canada, says, Sandy has “...the power and broad interpretive style of a Bette Midler or Barbra Streisand... Sandy Cash has a very special gift, that more than a singer, she is an excellent storyteller.” More at www.sandycash.com
+
Tix, $15, and it will likely sell-out (the Guide gave you a “Ticket alert”). Reservations, 626-798-6236, 10 am-10 pm, seven days. There’s more on the venue’s website, at www.coffeegallery.com
