√  THE FINEST KIND, CANADA’S VOCAL-HARMONY TRIO, PERFORMS FEBRUARY 4

The celebrated Canadian vocal harmony trio, THE FINEST KIND, arrives at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena for one show, at 8 pm on Tuesday, February 4th.

The Ottawa, Canada-based group is the collaboration of Ian Robb, Ann Downey, and Sheldon (Shelley) Posen. The three formed The Finest Kind in 1991. Since then, they’ve been busy raising the bar for vocal harmony performance in the Folk genre, touring frequently in Canada, the United States and England.

With personal and musical roots all three countries, a Finest Kind performance is inevitably a rich mixture of songs of traditional, old, and more recently penned origins, and from both sides of the Atlantic. The trio will tell you that they get material from many sources – word of mouth, commercial recordings, and from “the great folk song collections of the last couple of centuries.”

So an English, Irish or Newfoundland traditional ballad might be followed by the works of Utah Phillips, Hank Williams, Stan Rogers, Rudyard Kipling, or perhaps a self-penned piece by Robb or Posen. They accompany some songs on guitar, banjo, bass or concertina. It’s been said that many of their songs “are glorious, rich unaccompanied vocal harmony arrangements.”

We’re also told that they deliver their material “with the entertaining and informative good humor that comes from two decades of performing together.” Finest Kind has recorded 5 albums, received 2 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, appeared on the Grammy-nominated tribute to the late UTAH PHILLIPS, “Singing through the Hard Times,” and recently collaborated on JOHN McCUTCHEON's 2013 release, “22 Days.”

Tonight marks their long-overdue first appearance in Southern California.

You can learn more at their website:

www.finestkind.ca

To make your reservations for their performance, call 626-798-6236, 10 am-10 pm, seven days. There’s more on the venue’s website, at: www.coffeegallery.com

√  NEW VENUE, “MONICKERS,” IN SIMI VALLEY

Monickers is already promising to bring “World-Class Live Music” in “a new Americana type venue.” The guy behind it has the connections to do that. Monickers is the creation of GARY BRIGHT of RPS Entertainment.

Since the beloved Zoey’s suddenly closed late last year, Ventura County has needed a Folk-Americana music venue. Granted, Zoey’s was almost at the beach, while Simi Valley is a long ways inland – and close enough to attract SFV peeps. Of course, the Guide will celebrate a good venue anywhere.

Gary told the Guide, “It’s a small intimate setting, comfortably seating 150 or standing 300. Monickers has the luxury of sharing the same facility with one of Ventura Country’s state-of-the-art recording studios, allowing us to be able to offer each performing act live studio-quality tracking of their audio, along with multiple-camera filming of the entire performance, which will allow Monickers to make available radio content of the shows, and / or live streaming. [The] web site [will] launch in the next 30 days [but since the new Monickers] site is not up yet… visit the facility’s site at http://118weststudios.com.”

You can also monitor their Facebook page, which at press time had only sparse content. It’s at:

www.facebook.com/MonickersConcerts

Beyond its life as a recording studio, the venue already has a little history hosting a live performance that music lovers could attend. RICHARD SMITH played there on November 7, well before the official opening, which was originally announced for January.

The first show advertised at the venue in 2014 is on February 18th, at the rather early hour of 6:30 pm. That’s an evening with the quite formidable trio of SYLVIA TYSON, CINDY CASHDOLLAR, and SCARLETT RIVERA. Jump on ticket reservations as soon as they become available, as this will surely sell-out.

Monickers is co-located at the 118 West Studios home base, at 2251 B Ward Av, Simi Valley 93065; their phone is 805-285-2177.

We look forward to catching a show there soon, and we wish the new venue a long and tuneful life!

√  LIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEW: THE JANGLE BROTHERS (formerly THE BYRDS & BEYOND)

by Michele Marotta

John York, Chad Watson and Billy Darnell recently named their trio THE JANGLE BROTHERS, after performing for some time as "The Byrds and Beyond." They tour, mostly in California, and perform about once a month at The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, where I caught them.

JOHN YORK leads the group. His background is extensive, as a former member of the Byrds, the Sir Douglas Quintet, The Mamas and the Papas, and Dr. John. He is backed by BILLY DARNELL and CHAD WATSON in an absolutely incredible, high energy show, showcasing Chad on bass and trombone and Billy on lead guitar.

BILLY DARNELL played guitar for the Gene Clark Byrds, and for The Everly Brothers, Dr. John and Doug Kershaw, and Roger McGuinn.

CHAD WATSON is a legendary bass player for Janis Ian, Delaney Bramlett, Charlie Rich, Freddy Fender and countless other artists. He’s also an acclaimed record producer.

The trio played a number of Byrds songs, including “Mr. Tamborine Man,” The Bells of Rimney,” and “Turn, Turn, Turn,” the last one being the cover of a PETE SEEGER song that made the Byrds famous and Pete wealthy, for the first time in his life. The trio demonstrates musical diversity, including a DAVID ALAN COE cover of “I Love Robbing Banks.”

Each of the three knows a who’s-who of musicians. Surprise guests are almost expected when they perform. After the intermission, JOHNNY ECHOLS, formerly of LOVE, was onstage playing bass while Chad played trombone. The show ended with a ten-minute version of “Eight Miles High,” featuring several minutes of John, Chad and Billy on their respective instruments.

With their once-a-month residency at the Coffee Gallery, a dwlightful listening room, I highly recommend seeing them. They’re entertaining and fun!
