TIPPECANOE & THE BEATLES TOO; a big day and night on the music scene ~ Feb 9, 2014

.
It's Sunday-Sunday-Sunday, and a whoooole lot is a-goin' ON!

February 9th in History… and the “Tippecanoe” thing…

The US Weather Service was founded on this day in 1870. William Henry Harrison was born on this day in 1773, and it’s too bad he didn’t have a weather report to prevent his demise. With a campaign slogan of “TIPPECANOE AND TYLER TOO,” celebrating his leadership as a war hero, he was elected as the ninth President in 1840. He died a month after taking office, from catching a cold during his brutally cold Inauguration; ironically, he was the only president ever to study to be a doctor. Classic case of someone who needed to “physician, heal thyself.” Or to pay attention to the weather.

Today is also the birthday of local music fan and stalwart supporter of the scene, Lynda Kay Bruton.

√  “THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED AMERICA: A GRAMMY SALUTE TO THE BEATLES,” TONIGHT ON CBS

Airing exactly 50 years to the day from The Beatles first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show," tonight’s special on CBS, from 8-10:30 pm, will divert many of us from the Olympics to watch or record.
+
Ken Ehrlich, the show’s producer/creator, has introduced numerous innovative concepts during his impressive four-decade career, for shows ranging from the GRAMMYs, the Emmys, the Blockbuster Awards, the Alma Awards, the Latin GRAMMYs, the European MTV Awards and the MTV Movie Awards, which he created in 1992. Ehrlich got his start in 1974 as the creator of the PBS music series “Soundstage” before moving to Los Angeles, where he has produced the annual GRAMMY Awards Show since 1980. Currently, Ehrlich directs the massively-popular Celine Dion Las Vegas Caesar's Palace show, which is sold-out for the next two years. Other specials from Ehrlich's incredible resume include Lifetime Channel's “Intimate Portrait,” VH1's “Divas Live,” and “We Will Always Love You: A GRAMMY Salute to Whitney Houston.” Other recent highlights include producing two shows with Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, the first-ever GRAMMY Museum Gala Concert, and a highly successful fundraising concert for the Obama campaign.

√  BIG JAY McNEELY, MUSIC LEGEND WHOSE HORN WAS ON THE COVER OF “SMITHSONIAN” MAGAZINE, PLAYS TODAY IN SAN PEDRO

Let’s jump right to the biggest “wow” factor: In 2000, the Experience Music Project in Seattle installed a special Big Jay McNeely exhibit that includes his original Conn saxophone; the Smithsonian magazine put the horn on its June 2000 issue cover, along with Jimi Hendrix's hat, Janis Jopin's feather boa, and Eric Clapton's Stratocaster. Big Jay is also the subject of Jim Dawson's “Nervous Man Nervous: Big Jay McNeely & the Rise of the Honking Tenor Saxophone” (Big Nickel Press, 1995), the only book ever written about the R&B sax and its influences.

"Rock ‘n’ roll saxophone pretty much begins with Big Jay Mc Neely. He’s the king of the honkin’, squealin’, bar walkin’, flat-on-his-back Blowin’ tenor men -the Number One “real gone guy” of the 50’s." ~ Black & White Blues (the Book).

Tenor saxophonist Cecil "Big Jay" McNeely has been "the king of the honkers" for over 60 years, and he's still going strong. Born in Watts, California, on April 29, 1927, he formed his own band with jazz legends Sonny Criss (alto sax) and Hampton Hawes (piano) while still in high school. But in late 1948, when he was asked to record for Savoy Records, he abandoned jazz for something more raucous and struck paydirt when his second release, a honked-up instrumental called "Deacon's Hop," went to 1 on the national R&B charts in February 1949.

In 1959, Big Jay enjoyed his biggest hit, a blues ballad called "There Is Something on Your Mind," featuring Haywood "Little Sonny" Warner on vocals. The record stayed on the R&B charts for six months and reached as high as 44 pop. The song was later a hit for Bobby Marchan. Other artists who have recorded Big Jay's song include B.B. King, Etta James, Freddy Fender, The Hollywood Flames, Gene Vincent, Albert King and Professor Longhair.

These days, Big Jay McNeely spends a good deal of time playing in Europe, Australia and Japan, but he has also had time to honk and shout at several Doo-Wop Society concerts, blues and jazz festivals, the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Festival, and the Rockin’ ’50s fest in Green Bay. He has also recently appeared in several of Art LaBoe’s variety concerts. Big Jay is still tearing it up and knows how to delight and entertain an audience of any size, from small clubs to stadium crowds. One of the last true old school entertainers, today Big Jay plays Alva's.

BIG JAY McNEELY & FRIENDS perform with special guest appearance by RENA CIFRA, today at 2 pm at Alva's Showroom, 1417 W 8th St, San Pedro 90732; call 800-403-3447 for reservations. Complimentary coffee, tea, hot cocoa and "Alvas" bottled water are provided. You can bring your own food & drinks, and there are food purveyors nearby that can supply with a to-go box of victuals.

√  JEFFREY BROUSSARD, CAJUN ZYDECO “ACCORDIONIST OF THE YEAR," PLAYS TODAY IN LONG BEACH

With the GRAMMYS so limited in their attention to roots music, winning “Accordionist of the Year" from the Zydeco Music & Creole Heritage Awards in 2007 remains a very big deal for fans of Louisiana music. And JEFFREY BROUSSARD plays “old fashioned Cajun-Creole Zydeco music and dance,” making his gig today in Long Beach a much-anticipated event. Mardi Gras is fast approaching. That makes this all the more exciting.

Jeffery Broussard and his band, THE CREOLE COWBOYS, feature the accordion mastery and soulful vocals of their front man, fondly remembered from his time with legendary band ZYDECO FORCE. Broussard’s current band delivers pack-the-floor renditions of Creole classics as well as their own brand of contemporary Zydeco, creating outstanding performances that continue to cultivate and inspire new generations of Creole zydeco fans.

√  SCREENING OF “GOOD ‘OL FREDA” (2013) THE BEATLES-INSIDER STORY, ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR ARRIVAL IN AMERICA

On the exact day of the 50th anniversary of the BEATLES performance on the “Ed Sullivan Show,” the screening of “GOOD ‘OL FREDA” (2013) kicks-off the second season of “REEL ROCKUMENTARIES” on the big screen at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro.

“Good Ol’ Freda," directed by Ryan White, (“Pelada”) tells the lost tale of the Beatles' devoted secretary and friend, Freda Kelly. She was there as history unfolded. The Warner Grand Theatre, built in 1931, is a lavish 1,500-seat art deco movie palace. The Warner Grand Theatre is a facility of the City of L.A. Department of Cultural Affairs.

Co-sponsor is the San Pedro Film Society, which presents the San Pedro International Film Festival (www.spiffest.org) produced by Art in Motion, Inc. That’s a nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers the community to watch and enjoy film and other creative media. Taran Schindler, spokesperson for the venue, says, “We show great films from recent festival circuits and premiers with a focus on classic and independent films. The San Pedro Film Society also supports local filmmakers and teaches kids and adults about filmmaking.” For more information about the San Pedro Film Society, send an email to info@SPIFFest.org.

The film screens at 7 pm this evening at the historic Warner Grand Theatre, 434 W 6th St, San Pedro 90731. Tickets are available at 310-833-4813 or at HYPERLINK "http://www.grandvision.org/"www.grandvision.org.
