♪ THIS DAY IN HISTORY: a very special “REMEMBRANCE DAY”
February 19th is a DAY OF REMEMBRANCE for Japanese Americans, commemorating the internments during WWII in the US and Canada.
Manzanar National Historic Site is someplace you should visit. Administered by the National Park Service, it is "One Camp, Ten Thousand Lives; One Camp, Ten Thousand Stories." In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. The Manzanar NHS website includes a "Virtual Museum Exhibit," allowing you to explore the Manzanar NHS "Virtual Museum" online, which highlights more than 200 artifacts, documents and photographs from its museum collection.
Manzanar National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service, nps.gov). The website is: www.nps.gov/manz
Actor George Takei ("Mr. Sulu" in "Star Trek") wrote this morning, "Although it happened over 70 years ago, I still remember my mothers' tears as soldiers with bayonets marched up our driveway in Los Angeles and ordered us out of our home.
“In honor of 'Remembrance Day,' I honor my mother, who held our family together in the internment camps. I remember standing in a long line to use the latrines (we had no private bathrooms). I was only a small child, but my mother spoke a single word to me I have never forgotten. Learn what that words was, and what it meant, here:
http://ohmyyy.gt/TDOQyF ."
Mr. Takei’s link takes you to an Amazon page for the 2013 musical "Allegiance," about WWII interred Japanese-Americans. Here's some info about "Allegiance" the musical, from the Amazon site:
"Original Cast Mini-Album Features Glorious Voices, Full Orchestrations By Brad Takei - December 7, 2013 Amazon Verified Purchase This cast mini-album provides evidence of why 'Allegiance' deservedly won three Craig Noel Awards including best featured male performance, best orchestrations and best new musical when it broke the 77-year-old box office record for attendance and sales during its world premiere last fall at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. Now, momentum is building for a transfer of 'Allegiance' to the Broadway stage. To whet our appetites for the upcoming New York run, this fully orchestrated mini-album features the glorious voices of Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, singing and acting stars Telly Leung, Allie Trimm, Michael K. Lee, and George Takei."
George Takei’s post this morning brought many comments. Here’s one that’s representative, from Anne-Marie Sousa:
“American's forget that we had our own Concentration Camps right in the United States. A country with The Statue of Liberty that states on the plaque... "Give us your poor and huddled masses" You George are one of many people who have spotlighted the miscarriage of justice. I cried when we watched your interview on Sunday Morning. The pain never goes away. May it never happened again.”

The trick is, you are not making selections from among nominees, and you must vote in at least 8 categories. So, if you don't frequent a variety of establishments in the South Bay, it might appear intimidating.
Renee Safier has offered to help you with the other categories. Just email her at:
reneesafier@hotmail.com
Of course, she hopes you'll vote for her band. And it's a big local deal. The Easy Reader registered over 1.8 million page views last year, making it the leading news site for several South Bay communities.
