“COACHELLA” MUSIC FESTIVAL passes go on sale today for the annual loud scene that’s more party than music. Yes, yes, we know the lineup and the scene are not likely to appeal to many of our readers, but if anyone wants to go, the thing always sells-out very early, then people scalp their tickets on the web.

Separate passes for each of the two weekends, or spend a lot and do both. Weekend 1 is April 11–13, Weekend 2 is April 18–20, 2014.

Festival passes for both weekends go on sale Friday, January 10th at 10 am PST. General admission festival passes for Weekend 1 must be purchased as a shuttle combination. All pass types are available for Weekend 2. The price you see is the price you pay — prices reflect all fees included. Layaway is no longer an option for either weekend.

Our Happy Birthday wishes for JOAN BAEZ come from the "A Mighty Girl" site:
Happy Birthday to legendary American folk singer, songwriter and activist Joan Baez! During her 55 years of performing, Baez has released over 30 albums. Her first three albums, "Joan Baez" (1960), "Joan Baez Vol. 2" (1961), and "Joan Baez in Concert" (1962) were chart toppers that went gold; her hit songs included "Diamonds & Rust" and covers of Phil Ochs's "There but for Fortune" and The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Baez also helped to bring fellow musical legend Bob Dylan, a relative unknown at the time, to the public's attention by inviting him to perform duets with her on stage, including at the influential Newport Folk Festival in 1963.

In addition to her tremendous contributions to music, Baez also has a long-standing reputation as an activist for human rights, environmental, peace and civil rights causes. She was very active in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and participated in many civil rights marches and rallies, including the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom during which Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech. In the mid- to late-60s, she became deeply involved in the peace movement during the Vietnam War period. Baez also played a major role in the establishment of US division of Amnesty International and took a year off from music in 1972 to organize its expansion to the West Coast.

In recent decades, Baez has continued to be actively involved in a wide range of social issues while recording numerous albums and performing widely. Her music remains an inspiration to many as it has been for over two generations.

"JOHN FOGERTY: WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE, " is the wonderful temporary exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, on display through this month. It features artifacts from his personal collection, and it is named after his current album, hailed by fans and critics alike. John Fogerty’s music was considered rock when he first made it with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, but, current and retro, it’s classic roots-rock-Americana now. The album received a rare 5-star lead review in Rolling Stone. Included with regular museum admission, which also includes the temporary exhibition, “RINGO: PEACE & LOVE.”

David Brewer and Rebecca Lomnicky each have spent copious amounts of time delving into the traditions of their respective instruments, living and studying in the highlands of Scotland, and have forged their duo in the spirit of merging these two similar but very different worlds to create a new seamless sound which is both kinetic, and full of passion. In this concert, the duo will explore this classic repertoire with fiddle, bagpipes, guitar, bodhran, and penny-whistle.

David Brewer is a multi-instrumentalist who has toured with the Scottish super-group The Old Blind Dogs, and with Molly's Revenge across the US, the UK, Canada, China, Australia, has been a special guest of the six-time Grammy winning group The Chieftains, and was a key musician for the sound track of the PBS documentary, ‘Andrew Jackson, Good, Evil, and the Presidency.’ David, who is known for being animated and engaging on stage, accompanies Rebecca’s award winning fiddling with guitar, Irish penny-whistle, and bodhran frame-drum, but primarily the Scottish bagpipes, on which he is unarguably one of the most energetic and charismatic performers of the instrument in the world today.

Rebecca Lomnicky began playing classical violin and piano at age five, discovered Scottish fiddle music a few short years later, and in 2005 won the Junior Division of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Competition. Following that victory, she recorded her first CD, The Call, praised by "Dirty Linen" magazine as "technically masterful, and wonderfully melodic." In 2009, Rebecca won the 20th Annual Glenfiddich International Scottish Fiddle Championship held at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Scotland. The invitation only championship - seen as the Grammys of the fiddling world- is widely regarded as the most prestigious in Scottish fiddle. She has performed in Scotland, Ireland, Italy, China, and across the US, has been featured on the BBC radio show, Take the Floor, and in 2009, recorded her second CD, Inspired, with David Brewer. Presently, Rebecca is studying music and anthropology at Cornell University, & the University of Edinburgh, and the duo tours the Celtic festival circuit between semesters.

Herb Pedersen does guitar and vocals. Herb is an American musician, guitarist, banjo player, and singer-songwriter who has played a variety of musical styles over the past forty years. TOM SAUBER plays his fiddle and banjo and does vocals. A native of Southern California, Tom has helped bring authentic traditional music to the film industry. In 1980, along with Ry Cooder and David Lindley, he played the music for the motion picture The Long Riders. He has also appeared in Bound for Glory, Geronimo, and numerous TV movies and series. PATRICK SAUBER....banjo, mandolin, vocals....and BILL BRYSON, upright bass, vocals.

Patrick Sauber (son of old-time music guru Tom Sauber) has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good solid Scruggs- style 5-string banjo and mandolin, i.e. Bill Monroe and more current styles. For such a young player, it will be interesting to see where he carries this talent. He also sings all the needed parts in the good trio and quartet numbers.

Bill Bryson comes from a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled of the upright bass players in the business, he's been with such great groups as: The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. He's a wonderful lead singer, and is one of the best baritones in demand today. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

Andy McKee's acoustic guitar can approximate the polyrhythmic interplay of a percussion ensemble, the harmonic sweep of a string section, the dazzling runs of a bluegrass doghouse bass-and-banjo duo, and virtually anything else his pastoral compositions and tasteful covers require. In nine years and five records, he has written an oeuvre that globally inspires and intrigues music fans. His robust 200-dates-a-year tour itinerary--often spanning domestic rural to the exotically remote, from Arizona to Zimbabwe and everything in between--and his fans-first commitment make him a worldwide ambassador for a new era in acoustic virtuosity.

McKee's imaginative and masterful approach to the instrument and his Guitar Masters tour franchise--a tour package of edgy progressives--is helping to redefine our conception of acoustic guitar. Fans of sophisticated holiday music had the opportunity to hear McKee on Josh Groban's Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum Christmas album, “Noël.” In December 2008 McKee was awarded Acoustic Guitar magazine's esteemed worldwide Silver Medal for his fingerstyle approach. But most fans' first exposure to his "guitartistry" has been through his YouTube presence; the Kansas native's 100 million cumulative YouTube views put him in the top three most-viewed subjects in the site's history.

McKee's masterful expressionism on the guitar includes exotic tunings for rich resonance, drones for mystical ambience, complex polyrhythmic percussion, slap and pop funk bass dynamics, and a tasteful two-hand tap technique that's unique in that it favors percussion and expansive harmonic capabilities versus show-off licks. His vision extends beyond standard instrumentation, and McKee has been fortunate enough to have endorsements from a number of forward-thinking luthiers like Greenfield (fanned-fret guitars), Lance McCollum (baritone guitars), and Ron Spillers (harp guitars) to build him instruments and help him realize his exotic and complex musicality. His chops are compositionally derived, his art necessitates his technique, and this approach has an emotional resonance and purity lacking in many guitar virtuosos whose chops are for peacocking for the audience.

McKee is a self-taught musician who grew up studying cassettes and CDs of artists as diverse as Preston Reed, Don Ross, Billy McLaughlin, Michael Hedges, Eric Johnson, and Dream Theater. Interestingly enough, his slap-and-pop technique is inspired by Earth, Wind & Fire's bassist Verdine White. He also absorbed the sophisticated yet accessible work of 1980s icons like Toto and Tears for Fears. His compositions and imaginative technique are an amalgamated conception of these disparate aesthetics--the chops-y journeys of guitar masters, the irreverent genius of the modern acoustic wizards, and the creative and hooky compositional and arrangement sense of good 1980s pop. McKee writes with rich, impressionistic chords that often evoke beautiful country landscapes. He arranges with a keen understanding of dynamics and how songs have to feel transporting to have emotional impact.

He started his professional career, like many musicians, as a guitar teacher, before his career-launching appearance at the venerated National Finger Style Guitar Championships in Winfield, Kansas, where he was a top finalist. From that platform he went on to be a recording artist, and, sticking close to his indie ideals, he has managed to sell 50,000 records. He has also sold thousands of hand-transcribed folio books to those who want to study his music in a more intimate and scholarly way.

McKee is currently building the Guitar Masters tour brand, a franchise that seeks to combine technically masterful acoustic guitar performances with artists' workshop accessibility for an engaging and participatory fan experience. His current CD/DVD package, Joyland (Razor & Tie, 2010), has a cinematic feel that often conjures up abandoned theme parks, though it also features his trademark pastoral compositional style. The album is a breakthrough as he tastefully expands his artistic palette by adding drums and cello in select places, showcasing his scoring capabilities outside the guitar-centric realm.
