1)   THE SHOW PONIES DELIGHT A SOLD-OUT CROWD MONDAY NIGHT

You, the Guide’s readers, really came through. The Guide prominently brought you the news that THE SHOW PONIES, folk fest faves with “Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin” winner PHILLIP GLENN and two award-winning vocalists, were performing Monday night on just 36 hours’ notice.

With them was opening act JOSEPH, a band of three lovely young sisters from the beautiful Pacific Northwest. They easily traded lead vocals and interwoven harmonies and singing in close parallel make them an “A” list act. We hope they return soon from their base in Portland, Oregon.

More immediate is the subject of the locally-based SHOW PONIES. We liked them the first time we heard them, two years ago, and the Guide’s editor strongly recommended them to impresario Bob Stane, who then brought them to his Coffee Gallery Backstage, L.A.’s best acoustic listening room. Last night’s show marked their third performance at that venue.

It’s remarkable when any artist or band can sell-out a venue on such short notice. The crowd was delighted, and there were multiple encores, the last with the girls of JOSEPH joining the SHOW PONIES for the old traditional “I’ll Fly Away.” Before that, the band presented an energetic tour-de-force of their originals, each good enough to make them the next Old Crow Medicine Show. Musically, they are much superior to Mumford & Sons. Both their instrumental and vocal prowess make them ready for the Grand Ole Opry. We’re neither kidding nor exaggerating.

“Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin” winner Phillip Glenn also plays mandolin, and he’s fabulous. Led by award-winning male and female vocalists Clayton Chaney and Andi Schrock, they benefit greatly from Andi’s bottled-lightning stage presence. With her million-dollar smile, newlywed Andi Schrock had run a half-marathon the day before the show, and she was clearly ready to do that again (though we’re glad she was on the stage and not among an anonymous crowd of runners).

This talented ensemble features Jason Harris on guitar and banjo and Kevin Brown on drums. Each is important to the sound, the arrangements, and the magic they make on stage. The Show Ponies strike a balance between old and new, joy and sorrow, rough and tender, and they are better every time we se them. Though, after last night, it’s hard to imagine they need to be any better than what they gave the audience.

As an addendum, guitar great Muriel Andersen plays tonight at the same venue, the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, at 8 pm.

2)   LOS LONELY BOYS REVEAL NEW SONICS, NEW SONGWRITING PARTNERS ON NEW CD

by Cary Baker

After acoustic album successes, multiple Grammys, and a serious injury, the beloved Texan brother trio bounces back from adversity with adventurous album, “Revelation,” out today, January 21, 2014.

Speaking from Austin, Texas, Jojo Garza says, “We decided to call this album ‘Revelation’ because we want to make music that reveals something to people about their lives and their world.”

Garza is talking about the new release by Los Lonely Boys, the close-knit Texas trio that the bassist / vocalist shares with his brothers Henry (vocals, guitar) and Ringo (drums, vocals). “As musicians and artists, we’re here to connect with people, and to share our view of things,” Jojo adds.

“Revelation” — released on the band’s own LonelyTone imprint in association with the respected Austin-based indie Playing in Traffic — is a landmark release for the siblings. While maintaining the infectiously melodic mix of bluesy rock ’n’ roll and rootsy brown-eyed soul that’s long endeared Los Lonely Boys to its fiercely loyal fan base, Revelation adds an expansive range of new sonic elements, e.g. the conjunto touches of “Blame It on Love,” the reggae groove of “Give a Little More,” the rustic acoustic textures of “It’s Just My Heart Talkin’,” and the baroque pop elements of “There’s Always Tomorrow.”

“We’re always trying to broaden our horizons and advance musically, and that’s something that we were very conscious of in making this record,” Jojo states. “We’re always looking for new ways to communicate and reach people, so we experimented with a lot of different sounds and production approaches.”

Toward that end, the brothers collaborated with an eclectic cast of co-writers in assembling the dozen new original songs that comprise “Revelation,” including alt-country icon RADNEY FOSTER, in-demand pop tunesmiths MATTHEW GERRARD and DAVID QUINONES, Black-Eyed Peas’ collaborators GEORGE PAJON JR. and KEITH HARRIS, and RAUL PACHECO of OZOMATLI.

“Revelation” also marks Los Lonely Boys’ first recording work since Henry Garza sustained serious injuries in a fall from the stage during a February 2013 performance in Los Angeles, necessitating a lengthy and ongoing recovery period.

“We nearly lost Henry, man, and that was a big change for us,” Jojo acknowledges. “The whole experience was a wake-up call for us. It made us rethink every aspect of our lives and our careers, and it reminded us of what’s really important to us.”

The abiding sense of family unity and creative rapport that allowed the band to weather such a potentially devastating event has been built into Los Lonely Boys from the beginning. Indeed, the three brothers – Henry, Jojo and Ringo – have been making music together their entire lives. Their father, Ringo Garza Sr., was a member of another sibling band, THE FALCONES, which played throughout Southern Texas in the ’70s and ’80s. When that group disbanded, Ringo Sr. went solo, and recruited his three young sons to back him. The family relocated to Nashville in the ’90s, and soon Henry, Jojo and Ringo Jr. began writing and performing their own material as a trio.

After moving back to Texas, the brothers recorded their eponymous debut album in 2003 at WILLIE NELSON’s Pedernales studio in Austin, with Willie himself guesting on the sessions. Although originally released on the small “Or Music” label, Epic Records picked-up Los Lonely Boys for major-label distribution in early 2004. The album quickly won the band a large national audience. Its lead single “Heaven” became a Top 20 pop hit, reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, and eventually won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

After a prominent guest appearance on the 2005 Santana album “All That I Am,” Los Lonely Boys solidified their success with 2006’s “Sacred,” which brought two more Grammy nominations, and 2008’s “Forgiven,” as well as the holiday-themed “Christmas Spirit.” Meanwhile, the band continued to build its reputation as a singularly powerful live act.

In early 2009, Los Lonely Boys made their LonelyTone / Playing in Traffic debut with the all-covers EP “1969,” followed by the unplugged” Keep On Giving: Acoustic Live!” Those releases set the stage for the band’s acclaimed 2011 album “Rockpango,” and for the creative leap forward that “Revelation” represents now.

“We want to make music that brings people together, not music that divides people,” says Jojo.

He continues, “We’re all about having a good time, but we also make an effort to write about things that really matter. A lot of people write songs about superficial things, like how you look and what kind of car you drive and how much money you have, but we’re not interested in that. We want to create music that’s about the love and the energy and the spirit that we all carry as people.”

“We’re very thankful that God blessed our family with a drummer, a guitar player and a bass player, and that the three of us get to make music together,” Jojo concludes. “There’s been a few bumps in the road here and there, but that happens in any family and in any band. The main thing is that we stick together, and that we’re trying to pass on that feeling of brotherhood, of familia, in the music that we make.”

Los Lonely Boys play an L.A. show to celebrate the release of the new album. It’s Thursday, February 6 at the Troubadour, at 8 pm; Tickets are $30, available now at: www.troubadour.com/event/390029-los-lonely-boys-los-angeles

3)   NAMM NEWS: SENNHEISER TO DEBUT UNIQUE LASER-SUPPORTED MIC

Sennheiser will demonstrate its unique “Laser Drum Microphone Concept” at the 2014 NAMM Show this week in Anaheim. Daily demonstrations will feature the concept microphone developed by Sennheiser Technology and Innovation Lab of San Francisco.

Among the countless innovations that will be available for attendees at NAMM to oogle, audio specialist Sennheiser announced it will exhibit an advanced concept microphone at the 2014 NAMM Show. This one is designed to improve drum sound pick-up, but if you’re not a drummer, don’t run away. The concept is the thing here. Developed by Sennheiser's Technology and Innovation Lab in San Francisco, this is unique, based on a recording technology supported by lasers.

In the past, Sennheiser has used exhibitions such as the NAMM Show as sounding boards to gain insight and feedback on its latest developments in its Pursuit of Perfect Sound. The new laser drum concept will be demonstrated on the Sennheiser stage to visualize the idea.

Typically, many microphones are used to capture the sound of a drum kit. However, each single microphone usually captures many other sounds in addition to its intended source. This is why many engineers have used gating techniques to keep the sonic image focused and avoid what is commonly referred to as comb filtering: a series of delayed signals that create sonic interference.

Rather than relying solely on dynamics processing, Sennheiser's laser drum microphone concept uses laser vibrometers to measure the vibration of the drum head. Instead of being triggered by acoustic waves, the gates for each drum are triggered using the laser beam which picks up the visual vibration of the drum head. This equates to less bleed across the pieces of the entire kit, and a more focused overall drum sound.

Those attending NAMM can experience Sennheiser's unique laser drum microphone concept in person at the Sennheiser booth in Hall A, Booth 6577, between Thursday, January 23 and Saturday, January 26, each day at 11:15 am, 1:50 pm, or 4:50 pm.

Sennheiser is a world-leading manufacturer of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. Established in 1945 in Wedemark, Germany, Sennheiser is now a global brand represented in 60 countries around the world, with U.S. headquarters in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Sennheiser's pioneering excellence in technology has rewarded the company with numerous awards and accolades including an Emmy, a Grammy, and the “Scientific and Engineering Award” of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

With her sleek bob haircut (usually with a flower placed “just so”), vintage fashion sense, strikingly beautiful looks and artfully customized ukulele, Janet Klein might seem at first to be a simple novelty act, a 21st-century hipster "ironically" recreating the subtly naughty looks of a fin-de-siècle French postcard. Then she opens her mouth to sing. There's no Betty Boop hiccups or Mae West-style brassiness in her charmingly original voice. Bearing an ever-expanding repertoire of, as she puts it, "obscure, lovely and naughty songs from the 1910s, ’20s and ’30s," Janet Klein is a musical archeologist hiding in the body of an F. Scott Fitzgerald heroine. The Parlor Boys is a loose-knit conglomeration that can include from four to up a dozen musicians, all excellent – sometimes with a Grammy winner among them.
