NEWS for the NEW YEAR…

♪  YOU CAN VOTE IN THE "AMERIPOLITAN MUSIC AWARDS," THROUGH JANUARY 2nd

The first annual "AMERIPOLITAN MUSIC AWARDS" has some formidable folk bands and individual musicians up for its awards, and music fans -- the public -- cast the votes to determine the results.

But you need to hurry: voting ends January 2nd, 2014.

While brand new, these awards can really matter, chiefly because the GRAMMYs have so few categories that accept Americana and either traditional or contemporary folk / roots music. These awards specifically target some of the vast American musical landscape that the GRAMMYs recognize sparingly or ignore altogether: Honky Tonk, Rockabilly, Outlaw, Western Swing, Venue, Musician, Festival, and DJ (Radio).

There are distinguished long-familiar names vying alongside others who have regional recognition or are newer on the scene, but already impressive, and as always in the awards arena, under-represented Folk-Americana musicians need awards to be taken seriously as accomplished artists.

Names you know are here: Rosie Flores, James Intveld, Ray Benson (and his band, Asleep at the Wheel), Wayne Hancock, Reverend Horton Heat, The Derailers, Cindy Cashdollar, Redd Volkaert – while others are dazzling but unfamiliar in a music/business world that overrewards celebrity and undercompensates artistry and accomplishment. Two that come to mind are Elizabeth Cook and Elana James.

One example of deserving nominees who play worldwide but struggle for the recognition they deserve in their own country is the crazy-good Hot Club of Cowtown. They are a top Acoustic Americana / western swing / hot jazz ensemble from Austin, Texas. The full trio is nominated in the "Western Swing" category, while Elana James, their dazzling fiddler and vocalist who performs with Bob Dylan, is nominated in the "Western Swing Female" category.

Only one Southern California music hotspot is a contender in the Best Venue category -- Viva Cantina / The Riverside Rancho, in Burkank. And, stunningly, no California music festivals received a nomination. Perhaps that’s because Southern California radio has such a sparse representation of Folk-Americana music, as reflected in the absence of any radio DJs from here. (What we have on Southern Cal radio is of exceptional quality, but we have so little of it as a percentage of total broadcast hours, or as a percentage of national folk-Americana broadcast hours.)

HERE ARE THE NOMINEES -- the people, bands, venues, and events in each category -- vying for your votes (and, importantly, you can vote just where you want and abstain from voting in categories where you are not comfortable):

"JOHN FOGERTY: WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE," is the wonderful temporary exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, on display through this month. It features artifacts from his personal collection, and it is named after his current album, hailed by fans and critics alike. John Fogerty’s music was considered rock when he first made it with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, but, current and retro, it’s classic roots-rock-Americana now. The album received a rare 5-star lead review in Rolling Stone. Included with regular museum admission, which also includes the temporary exhibition, “RINGO: PEACE & LOVE.”

Here are comments from critics about tonight’s acts:
PATROLLED BY RADAR, a Los Angeles based roots-rock quartet blends alt-country, blues and soul with "equal parts British invasion, cow-punk and Americana songwriting respected as craft." – SoundSpike. "Patrolled By Radar (PBR) is a band surely making a name for itself by being honest in their rhythms and passionate in their words." – Grateful Web. "Jay Souza's full of character, melodic, yet rough around the edges vocals are perfectly suited to the music on these tremendously well written songs." -- Americana Roots UK.
