MORE VINTAGE ALBUMS JUST RELEASED IN RURAL RHYTHM’S “HERITAGE COLLECTION” SERIES
Sometimes everything old is new again.
Nashville, Tennessee-based Rural Rhythm Records announced yesterday the release of two new CD titles and more digital versions of vintage albums in its archival “HERITAGE COLLECTION” series. The label says the series is intended to “help keep traditional roots music alive and preserved for future generations.” The series includes authentic Old-Time Country, Bluegrass, Folk, Country Waltzes, Fiddle Tunes and Gospel music performed by many legends and pioneers. Titles are mastered from the original master tapes, with original cover artwork and include many albums never-before available on CD.
The two new CDs in the Heritage Collection Series are available as physical CDs and in digital formats. They are:
♪ “J.E. MAINER with RED SMILEY & THE BLUE GRASS CUT-UPS, VOLUME 3,” originally released in 1968, and
♪ “JIM GREER & THE MAC-O-CHEE VALLEY FOLKS – STARS OF THE W.W.V.A. JAMBOREE,” originally released in 1967.
Neither of these titles were previously available as CDs or digital downloads, and all six are currently receiving radio airplay.
Along with these two, four additional vintage albums have just been made available on CD with the original album art, also available as digital downloads without the art.
These additions to the Heritage Collection series are:
♪ RED SMILEY & THE BLUE GRASS CUT-UPS – “Volume 2” (RUR-182)
♪ LEE MOORE – “Everybody's Favorite” (RUR-202)
♪ J.E. MAINER & THE MOUNTAINEERS – “The Legendary J.E. Mainer, Volume 20” (RUR-250)
♪ CURLY FOX – “Champion Fiddler, Volume Two” (RUR-252)
You can call your favorite bluegrass radio show and request them, since they’ve gone out to DJs.
The first four titles in the Rural Rhythm Heritage Collection Series were released last year. These are:
♪ RED SMILEY & THE BLUE GRAS CUT-UPS, self-titled, originally released in 1967
♪ CURLY FOX – “Champion Fiddler, Volume One,” originally released in 1972
♪ LEE MOORE – “Sings Radio Favorites of Country Music,” originally released in 1966
♪ HYLO BROWN & THE TIMBERLINERS, self-titled, originally released in 1967.
All of these albums became available on CD for the first time in 2013.
All of the earlier releases in the Heritage Collection Series have charted high on the “TOP 50 ALBUM CHART” and “TOP 50 BLUEGRASS / FOLK ALBUM CHART” from AirPlay Direct. On January 16th, three of the titles held the #3, #4 and #5 chart positions on the AirPlay Direct TOP 50 ALBUM CHART.
Some upcoming titles in the Rural Rhythm Heritage Collection Series have been revealed by the label. These are:
♪ HYLO BROWN – “Folk Songs of Rural America”
♪ HYLO BROWN – “Legends & Tall Tales”
♪ JIM EANES with RED SMILEY & THE BLUE GRASS CUT-UPS
♪ J.E. MAINER & THE MOUNTAINEERS – “The Legendary J.E. Mainer, Volume 4”
♪ MAC MARTIN & THE DIXIE TRAVELERS – “Travelin’ Blues – Instrumental Album”
♪ DALE POTTER with SHOT JACKSON & JIM MURPHY – “Hoe Down, Volume 1 – Instrumental Album”
They promise to announce even more reissue titles in the near future.
Rural Rhythm’s Heritage Collection Series is available through eOne Distribution, and available wherever digital and physical CD music is sold.
If you aren’t familiar with the deep treasure trove of the Rural Rhythm Records Catalog, here’s the scoop. The label released a long line of Old-Time Country; Bluegrass & Gospel albums during its first two decades after Uncle Jim O'Neal started the label in 1955. Many of these vintage classic albums are still in Rural Rhythm's active catalog, available on CD and digital formats. Many songs are still available in the various artist collection titles found in their “SOUND TRADITIONS” series. Many tracks were previously released only on vinyl records and will come back to life through the Rural Rhythm Heritage Collection Series.
Many legends and pioneers released albums during the period, including Mac Wiseman, Hylo Brown, Don Reno & Bill Harrell, Red Smiley, Jim Eanes, Vassar Clements, J.E. Mainer, Earl Taylor & Jim McCall, Raymond Fairchild and many more. Bringing the traditional “retro” vintage sounds from the past preserves, protects, promotes and presents the ageless music of these artists for current and future generations to enjoy and appreciate using the technologies of the 21st Century.
Rural Rhythm’s “Sound Traditions” collection titles have helped keep the traditional Bluegrass flame burning for decades and will continue the steady flow of available Old-Time Country, Bluegrass & Gospel titles culled from the treasure trove of masters in the label’s vault. This is a promising series, and it continues to deliver.

"[Martin Taylor is] Europe's finest guitarist." – Jazz Times.

Two-time Grammy nominee TOMMY EMMANUEL, the guitarist whose five-decade career has seen him win legions of fans worldwide, once again brings his passionate and infectious live show in Malibu for two performances. Emmanuel is joined by world-renowned British guitarist MARTIN TAYLOR, with whom he recorded and released the ARIA-nominated album “The Colonel & The Governor,” a jazz-inspired duet album that recreates classics from masters such as Django Reinhardt and Eddie Lang.
+
The two Pepperdine performances are part of a 23-city US tour, which kicked off on January 17 in San Francisco and wraps up on February 28 in Orlando, with a special performance at Folsom State Prison on January 20.
+
Recently Emmanuel self-released his highly anticipated live CD/DVD combo, titled Tommy Emmanuel CGP: Live and Solo in Pensacola, Florida. Recorded in early 2013, it includes old and new favorites, exhibiting his amazing showmanship and musical talent as he performs before a packed house at the Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio.
+
Emmanuel is an honorary Kentucky Colonel, a Certified Guitar Player (CGP), an Order of Australia Medalist (AM), and the holder of both an honorary master's degree (MA) and, more recently, an honorary Doctor of Arts (DR) from Charles Sturt University in Australia in recognition of his commitment to rural Australia and his contribution to music education. Taylor, a multi-award-winning guitarist, dazzles audiences with his solo shows, which combine virtuosity, emotion, humor, and a strong stage presence, while his inimitable style has seen him recognized as the world's foremost exponent of solo finger-style guitar playing. Taylor has invented and developed a way of playing the guitar that is admired, and often imitated, by guitarists everywhere.
+
Martin Taylor’s collaborations with artists include Jeff Beck, Bill Wyman, Chet Atkins, David Grisman, Diane Schuur, and Gary Burton, and have seen Taylor receive two honorary doctorates, a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Top 10 albums in both the US and Europe, a record 14 British Jazz Awards, and in 2002 he was named a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) "for Services to Jazz Music" by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

Wed, Jan 22, in Altadena:
8 pm BEPPE GAMBETTA plays his CD RELEASE show for “The American Album” at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001.
+
What do say about a guy who invokes bluegrass icons and comes from Italy with love and guitar?
+
When he’s BEPPE GAMBETTA, releasing “The American Album” (on Gadfly Records), you’re about to learn why musicians around the world count him among today’s absolute best acoustic guitarists. One ingredient is technical skill and virtuosity. Like only a few of the other great players, Beppe’s guitar is often recognizable whether the tune is unbelievably fast or hauntingly slow. Another is his deep feeling and respect for the traditions of folk music - not just the tunes and songs themselves, but also the lives of the people who made those tunes, and the role of music, in fostering and shaping cross-cultural communication and community.
+
Still, all of his amazing technique and a rich understanding of the past would not have been sufficient to elevate Beppe to the top tier of world musicians. He also brings something magical and harder to describe. It is vision and fearless creativity through which he explores and evolves new layers of musical territory and technique without ever losing a firm footing in his roots.
+
You hear it on this album from the opening track, a magnificent new piece Beppe composed that could be the soundtrack for a wonderful movie, to the last, which is the reimagining of a tune we all know that was written 75 years ago by a Louisiana Governor. In between, there is a new interpretation of an Earl Scruggs tune many music fans, including Beppe, first heard on the “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” album in the 1970s, and also a little-known and beautiful melody by Norman Blake.
+
There are medleys honoring the Delmore Brothers and the influential bluegrass guitarists Charlie Waller, Don Reno and George Shuffler. There is an old-timey song rescued from obscurity and a Canadian fiddle tune brought, perhaps for the first time in a recording, to the guitar. And there is more, including another of Beppe’s new compositions, this one inspired by a visiting chipmunk who was apparently an Olympic sprinter in training. As you listen, you may notice yet another important tradition at play here – that of the concept album.
+
While each song and tune is clearly magnificent and quite capable of dazzling on its own, the whole is somehow even more than the sum of its parts. We should mention that Beppe’s roots are not entirely American. Having been born and raised in Genoa, which remains his home for part of each year, Italian traditions do infuse his work. The poetry and spice they add to this aptly-named “American Album” may be more subtle than on his others, but they are a welcome reminder that great music truly is a universal language ready to enrich our lives.

+
More than four billion people around the world viewed his performance at the Olympics Opening Ceremony. If one word applies to Lang Lang, to the musician, to the man, to his worldview, to those who come into contact with him, it is "inspiration." It resounds like a musical motif through his life and career. He inspires millions with open-hearted, emotive playing, whether it be in intimate recitals or on the grandest of stages -- including the Beijing Olympics, and Last Night of the Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall, or the Liszt 200th birthday concert broadcast live to more than 500 cinemas around the US and Europe.
+
He forms enduring musical partnerships with the world's greatest artists, from conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel and Sir Simon Rattle, to artists from outside of classical music -- among them dubstep dancer Marquese "nonstop" Scott and jazz titan Herbie Hancock.
+
Thanks to his Sony ambassadorship, he brought Prokofiev's 7th Piano Sonata to the soundtrack of the multi-million-selling computer game Gran Turismo 5! And he builds cultural bridges between East and West, frequently introducing Chinese music to Western audiences, and vice versa.
+
It is his inspirational quality, perhaps, that led the “New Yorker” to call him "the world's ambassador of the keyboard." Time Magazine named Lang Lang in the "Time 100," citing him as a symbol of the youth of China and its future.
+
He launched the Lang Lang International Music Foundation to inspire and cultivate the next generation of music lover and performer. In October 2013, he was designated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations as “a Messenger of Peace,” with a special focus on promoting the importance of global education as a key driver of human progress and well-being.
+
Lang Lang is the GRAMMY Ambassador to China.
