Kevin Burton Smith, Butler’s “Coffee Music Guy,” says, “We're barely into the New Year, and already BUTLER'S COFFEE is tearing up the road, with a two-fisted night of songs and tales from the road. As Indy once said, ‘It ain't the years, it's the mileage,’ and these two ace performers certainly prove it, as they dish out a swirling blend of folk, rock, country and just a little bit of soul.
+
“Back by popular demand is HEATHER STEWART, a traveled Americana singer-songwriter outta LA with a couple of albums already under her belt, including the latest, What It Is. Heather's one of those troubadours who keeps her eyes open -- and sings about what she sees with range, power and true grit. Her music definitely sets a mood, an intoxicating swirl of intimacy and down-to-earth honesty that kicks its shoes off and makes itself at home. ‘I want people to walk away feeling as if they just had a lovely, intimate dinner with me,’ she says, ‘Where we discussed life, love and sex, drank wine and laughed a lot.’
+
“And then, the man with no plan, the original Spam in a can, the guy who put the chuck in up and International Man of Mystery CHUCK B. ROBERTS returns to town, wearing shoes, pants and everything, singing good songs about bad roads, bad nights and just bad ideas. He'll put a tear on your lips and a smile in your eye, or something like that, but once you've experienced the Complete 360 Degree Chucky, you'll never be the same. And understand why he's been voted Miss Congeniality with alarming regularity.
+
“(Nah, Chuck's actually a great guy, and one of my favourite singer-songwriters. If you're into great singing and songwriting, this Saturday's show with Heather and Chuck is just gonna be awesome. These are smart songs sung by two folks with an unflinching eye for the telling detail and a way with words and music.)”

Singing lines of sweet emotion transform into an abundantly virtuosic showpiece —Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto—which soars in the hands of electrifying violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, who also leads Pacific Symphony from the concertmaster’s chair for the remainder of the program. Esteemed as “the heart’s jewel” by the great violinist Joseph Joachim, Mendelssohn’s concerto is led by Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez, who makes his classical series debut during this first concert of the New Year. Described as an artist whose talent “will make you hang breathlessly on every note” (Los Angeles Times), Salerno-Sonnenberg stands out for her passionate and powerful sound, her risk-taking musical prowess and her dynamic presence. The concert also includes two pieces that emphasize the strings: Rodion Shchedrin’s fiery “Carmen” Suite based on Bizet’s opera and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s “Prologue and Variations.”
