10:30 am (Sat & Sun) 7th annual “ROADSHOW REVIVAL, A Tribute to the Music of Johnny Cash,” has a focus of live Rockabilly and Outlaw Country Music and brings two days of music performances, fun, and a vast variety of planned activities that include Car Shows and a Pin-Up Contest, in the festival’s NEW LOCATION at Mission Park in old downtown Ventura (across from Mission San Buenaventura), at 185 E Santa Clara St, Ventura.

Parking may be challenging, unless you bought a VIP ticket. VIP parking is at the Ventura County Museum (next to the venue) $10. Parking entrance on Santa Clara. Walk up Main Street for early (10:30am) VIP check-in.

A 7 pm FRIDAY NIGHT KICKOFF EVENT and Sunday night AFTER PARTY have been added.
Both happen at Bombay Bar & Grill, 143 S California St, downtown Ventura. Performances by the RSR tribute to the "Million Dollar Quartet" featuring "Elvis", "Jerry Lee Lewis", "Johnny Cash" and "Carl Perkins," plus the band JACKASS and special guests. Drink specials and Roadshow Revival merchandise giveaways. Party kicks off at 7 pm.

This 7th annual event, presented (as always) by Ross Emery Entertainment, features different themes each day. Sunday brings popular outlaw country, rockabilly, and bluegrass bands. Saturday centers around MANY Johnny Cash tribute bands.

This event is dedicated to the well-being of the local wildlife and all animals, and the proceeds are used to fund the development of a nature center located in the foothills. SUMMERFEST features various animal rescue groups that specialize in finding good homes for the many animals in their care. They bring a summer carnival to Sunland Park with local arts and crafts sales, animal adoptions and more.

Annual “SAN DIEGO SCOTTISH HIGHLAND GAMES & GATHERING OF THE CLANS” at Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Dr, Vista 92084.

This is a big event. The main festival is Saturday & Sunday, with an opening event Friday evening. There are plenty of entertainers, Scottish-style “Heavy Athletics” competitions, celebrations and gatherings of the clans, Highland Dancing, Piping & Drumming (that’s bagpiping), Sheepdog Trials, and plenty more. It all (or a lot of it, anyway) evokes ancient feuds, misty moors, Highland spirits, the wail of bagpipes, the sweet sound of fiddles, and the magic of Scottish legends.

A FRIDAY EVENT HAS BEEN ADDED, with a special STORYTELLING SHOW to kick off the annual San Diego Highland Games, at 7 pm on the Beer Garden Stage at Brengle Terrace Park.

Each year, there’s plenty of music, beyond the featured four groups of entertainers on two stages. This year, Irish / Celtic harp master AEDAN MacDONNELL is playing both days, and judging the harp competition on Sunday. Here are the four featured acts...

On the Beer Garden Stage...
THE WICKED TINKERS, a longtime festival favorite, return. The Tinkers’ Aaron Shaw is an expert piper – each morning before the Tinkers play, Aaron acts as a judge for the piping competition. Aaron is joined by Keith Jones on snare and other percussion, CJ Henderson on didgeridoo and horn, and Tiki King on the big drums.

STAND EASY joins the Tinkers on this stage. This is their first time at this festival. Led by John McLean Allen, the group fuses traditional Celtic tunes and highland pipes with modern rock styles.

On the Main Stage...
HIGHLAND WAY has been a popular attraction at these games for many years, and this year they’re moving to the main stage on the athletic field. Lead singer and guitarist Brian Caldwell, a native of Glasgow, is joined by Paul Castellanos. Paul plays fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and almost anything else with strings. They’re joined by Jim Soldi on bass, Sharon Whyte on accordion, Bob Sale on drums, and Glen Fisher on bass. Together they put a modern spin on traditional Celtic music.

THE BROWNE SISTERS AND GEORGE CAVANAUGH round-out the lineup on the main stage. Sisters Diane, Pamela, and Laura have been singing together since they were little, and their three-part harmony can carry you away. Their cousin George adds his rich vocals and masterful guitar to make an outstanding quartet. A truly fine act.

It turns out that Brian Caldwell (HIGHLAND WAY) and George Cvanaugh (BROWNE SISTERS) have been good friends for a long time, so expect some musical intermingling at some point during the weekend.
+
There’s so much to do at the Games, but be sure to reserve some time to sit and listen to the featured musicians.

Notes on two of the bands...

WICKED TINKERS – “Cask Strength Tribal Celtic Music!” Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, the Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and irresistible tribal drums as a professional touring band since 1995. With the addition, several years back, of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, the magic was complete. Sit back and be transported to an earlier time in Scotland and Ireland, when battle cries filled the air and strange, unheard-of creatures roamed the night. Or better yet, get on your feet and let your body move to ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds.

HIGHLAND WAY plays everything from high-energy festivals to those big Performing Arts Theaters from Scotland to Nova Scotia, and Ireland to California. These seasoned studio session musicians bring the same polished energy to stages around the world. With their huge repertoire they know how to tailor their performance to the audience. A native Scot with his Glasgow accent, Brian Caldwell is well known for his wonderful ability to charm any crowd while his energetic and driving rhythm guitar blends flawlessly with the rest of the band. This one features a 7 pm full concert set by the wonderful MARINA V (just before she embarks on another world tour), plus belly-dancing, yoga, arts & crafts, and food vendors. Marina tells us, “I played at this festival two years ago and everybody was so nice and we had a GREAT time! And all proceeds benefit an animal rescue in Irvine, so your ticket money will go to a great cause.

Annual “HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL” runs for over a week, with live music performances in various genres (some are folk-friendly), in venues large and small, all over the Hollywood end of L.A.

There’s also local and international theater. The ever-expanding event hosts around 275 shows each year. You’ll find everything from one-person shows, to new musicals with chorus lines, to comedies, to edgy dramas. For an abridged version, you can get tix to “The Pick of The Fringe,” showcasing five of the best shows, on Friday night, June 19.
