First news feature…

• JAMES HORNER, RENOWNED FILM COMPOSER, DEAD MONDAY IN PLANE CRASH

In Memoriam JAMES HORNER (1953-2015)

Composer James Horner had written many prominent, celebrated, and beloved film scores, including those for "Titanic", "Avatar," and "Braveheart." He had been nominated nine times for Oscars, winning twice in 1998 for "My Heart Will Go On" and his "Titanic" score.

Monday evening, USA Today posted news of his death in a plane crash, something that occurred Monday morning near the Santa Barbara County / Ventura County border. The Hollywood Reporter and other sources soon confirmed the tragic news.

When we mourn the loss of any artist, sometimes we are almost selfish, thinking that we will never again enjoy a new expression of that person's creativity. But do we think of the fact that that person was dad or mom, son or daughter, sister or brother, best friend since childhood, to somebody who loved them for the unique human being that they were, the totality of who they were?

L.A. musician Emily Sanders commented, “James Horner was one of my favorite composers for film... with music that brought so many films to life... His much had such beauty and uplifting themes.” She sent us comments with a link

“On October 4, 2013, James Horner received the ‘Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award’ from the City of Vienna, Austria for 2013.” Thanks to the posted video, “you can watch his emotional acceptance speech and get some impressions from this marvelous celebration. In it, Deborah Cox and Jeremy Schonfeld perform Horner’s ‘If We Hold on Together,’ conducted by David Newman. The night was called ‘Hollywood In Vienna.’ James Horner called this event ‘The most memorable moment in my life.’” Our thanks to Emily Sanders.

Horner’s speech and the musical performances at “Hollywood In Vienna” are at:

https://youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=4D22nRhXbX4

Emily also sent another link, calling it, “My favorite interview with James Horner. He talks about his love of music and flying, and how the two are woven together seamlessly in this movie. In this particular score – which he did with much more creative freedom than some of his previous projects – there is a unique and uplifting feeling... an inspirational video!”

Musician Duane Thorin commented, “I consider his to be some of the very finest film scoring ever. ‘Field of Dreams’ is so, so fine. So much heart in his work. A brilliant sensitive artist is lost to us. Thank you so much James, thank you. I only know his art, and never even saw his picture. But he touched deeply. My loss is selfish, so I send my sympathy to family.”

Second news feature…

• SUSIE GLAZE & THE HILONESOME BAND release “NOT THAT KIND OF GIRL,” out today

By Kim Grant

(Los Angeles) – Just out today, June 23, 2015, it’s a musically-diverse offering of what the band calls “Newgrass Americana Folk Fusion,” produced by the great Herb Pedersen. One track went out earlier this month, featuring Susie Glaze, Herb Pedersen, Chris Hillman, Mark Indictor, and Fred Sanders performing John David Souther's "Prisoner in Disguise." It’s available at www.susieglaze.com

The new album, “Not That Kind of Girl” is on Susie Glaze’s own Hilonesome Music label. If you delight in the eclectic in acoustic roots music, “Not That Kind of Girl” pushes the envelope with a variety of sounds within the genre. Produced by the legendary Herb Pedersen, this is the band’s 4th studio album since their debut in 2006 with “Blue Eyed Darlin’,” which the Guide’s editor named among the Best Albums of that year. “Not That Kind of Girl” is already attracting praise with Folkworks magazine calling it the band’s “best album yet…in part because this group keeps pushing their own boundaries.”

Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band have been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention, blending “classic” folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate. On “Not That Kind of Girl,” they stretch their musical muscles even further with Glaze professing that the band can “…mix bluegrass with mountain balladry, jazz and Celtic sounds and even a bit of rockabilly and Joni Mitchell-style rock/samba.”

Boasting guest artists Herb Pedersen, Chris Hillman, Joe Craven, and Skip Edwards, the album represents the work of the Hilonesome Band for the last two years since releasing the critically acclaimed "White Swan" in March of 2013.

This project took a while. Susie related, “Recording began in January 2014 with Herb Pedersen and Chris Hillman joining us in the studio to create our version of J.D. Souther's classic song ‘Prisoner in Disguise.’”

Besides “Prisoner,” other cuts on the album include six originals from their own resident songwriter, Rob Carlson, along with covers from David Olney, Denise Hagan and Ernest Troost. The feel of the album is decidedly Americana, a true melting-pot of folk music sounds including standard country, contemporary folk, Texas swing, Joni Mitchell-style jazz-rock, traditional old-country ballads, and bossa-nova-style jazz, with the classic ’70s sound of "Prisoner in Disguise" featuring Hillman and Pedersen topping off the eclectic mix. Pedersen also appears on several additional cuts on guitar, vocals, resonator guitar and 5-string banjo.

Leading off is the song “Independence,” an original with a newgrass / Celtic instrumental, calling up the specter of Irish anthems of glorious historical pasts. The title song, “Not That Kind Of Girl” (also an original) is a new classic-country tune in the style of Patsy Cline, celebrating fidelity in an amusing double-entendre play on words.

The track “Heartland” is a gorgeous heartfelt ballad from major Irish composer Denise Hagan. “Millionaire” is a cover of a song by Americana music compatriot Dave Olney, and it features a strong lead vocal from Highlonesome mandolinist Steve Rankin. A Henry Hipkens song, “That’s How I Learned To Sing The Blues,” boasts a humorous and great performance from bassist Fred Sanders. “The Mountain,” “Don’t Resist Me,” and “This Old House” are all originals, with the latter featuring Herb Pedersen on resonator guitar.

There’s a traditional ballad, “Dens of Yarrow,” performed in the old style of the Irish presentation with voice, fiddle and accordions only. Cherished ’70s power ballad “Prisoner In Disguise” (from J.D. Souther via Linda Ronstadt) features Herb Pedersen on guitar and harmony vocals and Chris Hillman on mandolin. There is a video in production for this song that features the band with Pedersen and Hillman. Kerrville New Folk winner and L.A. music institution Ernest Troost has his song, “The Last To Leave,” covered, and the record ends with another Carlson original, “Never Give Up,” which featured percussion by the great Joe Craven, famous emcee of folk festivals throughout, master musician, and formerly of the David Grisman Band.

With her renowned standout vocals, Susie Glaze is inspired by some of the great woman singers of country music. Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and the late Jean Ritchie are among a named few. Last year, Glaze spoke of the high honor to have a song included on the Compass Records release, “Dear Jean — Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie,” alongside iconic artists Judy Collins, Janis Ian, Pete Seeger, and many others. Susie sang for Ms. Ritchie at the release concert for that CD in May 2014 in Berea, Kentucky, on the bill with Kathy Mattea and John McCutcheon. “Many fans have told me that on the Jean Ritchie songs they can’t tell if it is me or Jean singing,” said Glaze. She adds, “Jean herself told me the same thing.”

Glaze has a gift for telling stories and communicating a feeling through a song. With a stellar band behind her and its impressive songwriting by Rob Carlson, “Not That Kind Of Girl” is a record to be proud of. “I think what is truly unique about us is our eclectic playlist and influences,” states Glaze. “Rob’s songwriting, my voice, and the tight bonding within our band — it all adds up to creating great music that doesn’t sound like anyone else.”

Third news feature…

• BACKBEAT BOOKS PUBLISHES “BOUTIQUE ACOUSTICS – 180 YEARS OF HANDBUILT AMERICAN GUITARS”

(Montclair, N.J., June 23, 2015) – Discerning guitarists know that solo luthiers and small workshops are currently building some of the finest acoustic guitars ever made. A new book, “Boutique Acoustics,” tells the story of how America's crop of talented luthiers came to create guitars that rival the legendary instruments of the 1930s and ’40s from builders like Martin, Gibson, and the Larson brothers, as well as a number of more obscure guitar makers who all have played a key part in the evolution of the instrument.

“Boutique Acoustics” starts in 1833 with C.F. Martin, Sr., the first known luthier in America. It goes all the way back, surveying the classical guitars he learned to build in Vienna under the tutelage of Johann Stauffer. From there, the book follows the story of how a gut-strung Austrian classical guitar developed into the modern steel-string flattop guitar, with the help of Spanish luthiers, Hawaiian steel guitarists, and Italian mandolin players.

The book also explains how unusual 19th century inventions, like the harp guitar and the 12-string, influenced the development of the modern six-string guitar. It’s quite complete, covering the birth of the steel-string, the rise of small factories, the advent of "one-man shops," the origins of various trends in guitar construction – the design of cutaways; the use of a variety of woods, polishes, and other aesthetic detailing; and the incorporation of high-tech materials, such as carbon fiber and Nomex.

Current luthiers including Ervin Somogyi, Charles Fox, Jeff Traugott, Michihiro Matsuda, and Kathy Wingert are covered, and so are the pioneers of modern guitar-making, including Michael Gurian, J.W. Gallagher, Stuart Mossman, Nick Kukich, the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, and Roy Noble. The Book also explores important but now obscure builders like Gower, NBN, and Max Krimmel.

Included in this lavishly illustrated volume is a comprehensive guide to every significant US maker ,descriptions of the most popular styles, and a detailed reference section about boutique guitar models.

The book’s author, Michael John Simmons, started playing electric guitar in punk bands as a teenager before he was converted to acoustic music by a rabid Django Reinhardt fan. He spent 15 years working at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, California, where he says he “learned more about the construction and history of ukuleles, guitars, mandolins, and banjos than was good for him.” Simons is a former review editor at “Fiddler Magazine” and a former contribution editor at “Acoustic Guitar.” He has authored other books – “Taylor Guitars: 30 Years of a New American Classic,” and he co-authored “Acoustic Guitar: An Historical Look at the Composition, Construction, and Evolution of One of the Worlds' Most Beloved Instruments.” Simmons is the co-founder, along with Jason Verlinde, of “The Fretboard Journal” and “The Ukulele Occasional” magazines.

“Boutique Acoustics” is richly illustrated, 144 pages, and retails for $29.99 (US); it is inventory #HL 00124178; UPC: 884088964214 On your bookshelf, it is 8.5" wide and 11.0" tall.

The publisher, Backbeat Books, is an imprint of Hal Leonard Performing Arts Publishing Group. More info, and where to find or order a copy, at:

Fourth news feature…

• ITS SOLID GOLD PHONOGRAPH RECORDS?
A WHILE AGO, BUT THE SPACE PROGRAM ISN’T QUITE DEAD

A veteran NASA spacecraft makes its 60,000th lap around Mars today, with “No Pit Stops,” as the space agency proudly quips. NASA's “Mars Odyssey” planetary orbiter spacecraft, reaches that major milestone today, June 23rd, when it total orbits reach 60K since arriving at the Red Planet in 2001. NASA has achieved miracles with its robotic rovers on the surface, and with this lesser-known little orbiting workhorse.

Musicians mostly know about two other robots, the pair of “Voyager” spacecraft that flew-by and photographed the planets, and now have both left the solar system – the only man-made objects ever to do that. Of course, the reason why music-types remember is that each “Voyager” carries a phonograph record made of solid gold, with instructions how to play it, for anybody (any “thing”) that finds it “out there.” The records contain classical, roots, folk, blues, bluegrass, acoustic, and rock music, as well as whale songs and greetings in many languages of Earth. Their musical inclusions are the source of the best space joke ever: “Wow! We have a message here from aliens!” “My God! What does it say?!” “Send more Chuck Berry.”

The U.S. is STILL the only nation EVER to land functioning robotic spacecraft on Mars, and still the only nation ever to send human explorers to any mass of land off the earth (the Moon). We now know that Europa, a moon of Jupiter, has more LIQUID water than all the oceans and other sources of water on Earth, COMBINED. We can pretty much know that if we are going to find life “out there,” it’ll be on Europa.

And, despite our proven abilities to get outstanding return for investment, we still can’t get Congress to spend any real money on space exploration because _____-?
