• STRONG EDITION OF “WOODSONGS OLD-TIME RADIO HOUR” LIVE STREAMS TODAY

WITH SPECIAL GUEST EDDY RAVEN PERFORM ON WOODSONGS OLD-TIME RADIO HOUR ON MONDAY, JUNE 22 AT 7PM EST

LORRAINE JORDAN won "Female Vocalist of the Year" and the prestigious "Song of the Year" at the 2015 SPBGMA Awards, is a current nominee for “Best Americana / Bluegrass Artist” in the 2015 “Carolina Music Awards.” Her band, LORRAINE JORDAN & CAROLINA ROAD, is bringing musical guest EDDY RAVEN to perform with them on the live “WOODSONGS OLD-TIME RADIO HOUR” this week, which can be heard at several times through the next six days. The show’s live streaming webcast is Monday, June 22 during the 4 pm (Pacific) hour.

In addition, the show airs at various times through the week on over 500 radio stations, though none are in L.A. (which, after all, is no surprise).

In addition to performing Raven's #1 hit, "I Got Mexico," Lorraine and her band will also perform songs from their brand new album, “Country Grass,” on which Raven is a guest player, along with some true music luminaries, including Crystal Gayle and Lynn Anderson.

The show, which originates in the Lyric Theatre in Lexington, Kentucky, streams live online at www.woodsongs.com.

"We're so excited to be part of the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour," said a happy Lorraine Jordan. "Get ready, because this is going to be something really special!"

A nominee for the top Americana/Bluegrass artist in the 2015 Carolina Music Awards, Lorraine, a North Carolina native, is no stranger there with roots in Garner, just outside Raleigh. The awards will be bestowed in downtown Raleigh on July 18 at the Duke Energy Center.

Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road have kept the momentum rolling, with the June 9 release of their latest album “Country Grass.” The star-studded project features collaborations with some of Country music's top legends including Crystal Gayle, Lee Greenwood, Lynn Anderson, The Kentucky Headhunters, T.G. Sheppard, Eddy Raven, John Conlee, Marty Raybon and the late Jim Ed Brown.

Just take a look at the guest performers on the track listing of their new album, “Country Grass”:

1. Runnin' Water (with The Kentucky Headhunters)
2. I Got Mexico (with Eddy Raven)
3. Darned if I Don't, Danged if I Do (with Marty Raybon)

Second news feature…

• “GREEN GROW THE LILACS” – Pulitzer Prize-nominated play at Theatricum in Topanga

The Pulitzer Prize-nominated play that inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Oklahoma!’ is rarely seen in its original form, and takes the stage here this summer.

TOPANGA, Calif. (June 22, 2015) – The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, where Woody Guthrie had a cabin on his friend Will’s place, is a delightful wooded environment transformed into a green theatre, and a fine place to go for music or a theatrical production. Every summer here offers a series of productions that alternate like the meshing wooden gears of a water-driven mill, usually throughout the three-four month season.

The final entry in Theatricum Botanicum’s 2015 “Americana” repertory season, Green Grow the Lilacs by Native American playwright Lynn Riggs is the rarely-produced 1931 play that vied for the Pulitzer Prize and inspired the first mega-musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” A rough-and-tumble love story with singing cowboys and classic folk music of the pioneering era, “Green Grow the Lilacs” will be directed by Ellen Geer for a July 11 opening.

Riggs set his play in the great, unchartered frontier of the Indian Territory a decade before the area known as Oklahoma became a state, incorporating the colorful vernacular of early 20th century settlers and infusing Lilacs with songs like “Git Along Little Doggies,” “Home on the Range,” “Skip to My Lou” and the title song, “Green Grow the Lilacs” – along with lesser known ballads and up-tempo hoedowns. Unlike modern musical convention with which today’s audiences are familiar, the characters in Riggs’ drama choose to sing for the sake of it rather than to move the action along, giving the play an organic richness that complements the style of the period. Critics of the day credited Riggs with the creation of a new form, the “folk drama.”

The semi-autobiographical story about cowhand Curly McLain, who goes up against an evil farmhand for the affection of Laurey, a farm girl —only to find himself arrested for murder on his wedding night —would make theater history; twelve years after its Broadway premiere (with Lee Strasberg in the supporting role of Peddler), Rodgers and Hammerstein adapted the play into the hit musical Oklahoma!. Although, Riggs’ play was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for drama, the musical’s popularity has eclipsed the original, and Lilacs is little known to today’s audiences.

The wild prairieland setting transfers beautifully to the verdant backdrop of Theatricum Botanicum’s outdoor amphitheater, where Jeff Wiesen stars as Curly; Willow Geer as Laurey Williams; Melora Marshall as Aunt Eller Murphy; Elizabeth Tobias as Ado Annie; Steven B. Green as Jeeter Fry; Leo Knudson as Old Man Peck; Zachary Davidson as Peddler; and Wendy Pigott as Cory Elam. Rounding out the ensemble are Tate Ammons, Olivia Buntaine, Carina Cherbosque, Caitlin Durkin, Arielle Fodor, Devin Holliman, Dimitri Aleman Jones, Kathleen Leary, Kendall Linzee, John Manahan, Victoria Yvonne Martinez, Gray Schierholt, Jay Sosnicki, Schyler Tillett and Alexander Wauthier as townspeople.

Lighting design for Green Grow the Lilacs is by Zach Moore, sound design is by Ian Flanders, costume design is by Randy Hozian and the production stage manager is Kim Cameron.

Theatricum Botanicum is renowned for its spirited productions of Shakespeare and modern classics in a spectacular outdoor setting. Unlike most theaters in the Los Angeles area that stage continuous runs of a single play, Theatricum, using a company of actors, performs each play on a rotating basis so that it's possible to see all five mainstage plays in a single summer weekend.

Theatricum has been named “One of the 50 Coolest Places in Los Angeles” by Buzz magazine, “One of Southern California's most beguiling theater experiences” by Sunset, and “Best Theater in the Woods” by the L.A. Weekly.

“The enchantment of a midsummer night at Theatricum Botanicum [makes it] crystal clear why audiences have been driving up into the hills since Theatricum’s maiden season way back in 1973. Summer Shakespeare doesn’t get any better than this,” writes StageSceneLA.

Says Los Angeles magazine, “The amphitheater feels like a Lilliputian Hollywood Bowl, with pre-show picnics and puffy seat cushions, yet we were close enough to see the stitching on the performers costumes. Grab a blanket and a bottle and head for the hills.”

“Green Grow the Lilacs” opens on Saturday, July 11 at 7:30 pm, and continues through September 26. Tickets range from $10-$39.50, with discounts available for students, seniors, the military and AEA members. Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum is located at 1419 N Topanga Canyon Bl, in the heart of Topanga Canyon, midway between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley.

For a complete schedule of the summer season’s performances and to purchase tickets, call 310-455-3723 or go to www.theatricum.com

3) MONDAY’s concert & arts scene
÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷ ÷

Mon, Jun 22, in Long Beach:
6:40-10 pm New "IMAGINE AN OPEN MIC" is a new listening room open mic (that debuted Jun 15; what a concept — no noise or talking) hosted by Geo. McCalip in an art gallery, the Gina Woodruff Art Gallery, 5555 Sterns, Long Beach. Park in the lot behind Trader Joe's.
+
This "different kind of open mic... is in a listening room, so you can hear the music and have your music heard." Says Geo.
+
Series will run every Monday, 7 to 9:30 pm, with signups beginning at 6:40 pm. The venue is between TJ's and Stearns. Use the entrance to the lobby. From there take the stairs or elevator to the second floor.
+
Sponsors say they "will close the door very shortly after 7 and only open it between songs. Be there before 7 pm."
+
This looks well thought-out. We're told, "Any music that does not exceed the noise levels acceptable to the neighbors is welcome. No drum kits, although a cajon, a djembe or a snare with brushes are cool). No bagpipes.
+
They will have "a mini jack cable to connect the PA to a phone, tablet, computer or CD player if someone brings a backing track. The PA also accepts RCA if you want bring that cable.
+
"Lyrics will need to be appropriate for the audience. They don't really expect children, but have something ready just in case."

A “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick…

Mon, Jun 22, in Hollywood:
7:30 pm THE KINGSTON TRIO plus original founding member BOB SHANE, and special guests TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT of the Eagles, AL JARDINE of the Beach Boys, TRINI LOPEZ, BARRY McGUIRE, THE LIMELITERS, and other surprise guests, at the Avalon, 1735 Vine St, Hollywood 90028; 323-462-8900.
+
This is a tw-night live taping of a pledge drive special for national PBS distribution. Sunday the 21st is billed as the "taped dress rehearsal" for the actual taping on the 22nd.
+
On Sunday and Monday, The Kingston Trio will be filmed in concert by Desert C.A.M. Studios (Chip Miller) and Terrel Cass Productions (both are award-winning directors/producers) at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, situated across the street from the Capitol Records Building (which the Trio helped to pay off in the late '50s!). The Kingston Trio will be joined by founding member Bob Shane (who seldom performs with them), Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), Al Jardine (founding Beach Boy), Trini Lopez, Barry McGuire, The Limeliters and Josh Reynolds (Nick’s son) for two exciting nights of concerts.
+
For the Kingston Trio, taping this concert in Hollywood, directly across the street from the famous Capitol Records building, is an historic homecoming. It was the Trio’s record sales that financed construction of that building. And when the Kingston Trio played their only tour ever in England, a little band – four lads from Liverpool – opened for them. Whereupon the Trio got home and told their label execs at Capitol, “You know, that band that opened for us over there is really good. You ought to sign them.” Capitol did, in 1964, the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon, and the label dropped the Kingston Trio.
+
That story and more is slated to become part of the PBS pledge special, in conjunction with a documentary being produced about the Trio and its impact on folk and music at large. Show time is at 7:30 pm, doors open at 6:30 pm.
+
This is very likely to be the last time anyone outside of the Phoenix area will be able to see Bob Shane perform live.

A “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick…

Mon, Jun 22, in L.A.:
8 pm “AN EVENING WITH ROBERT EARL KEEN” is a performance-interview at the Grammy Museum, near the Staples Center in the L.A. Live! Complex, S of downtown L.A.
+
Thirty years and 18 albums into an illustrious career, it would be impossible for Robert Earl Keen not to sound like himself. Since winning the 1983 New Folk songwriting award at Texas' prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival, he's carved a place for himself in the Lone Star pantheon of incisive, novelistic writers, alongside Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and Guy Clark. With standout records such as West Textures (1989), Picnic (1997) and Ready For Confetti (2011), as well as Texas standards such as "The Road Goes On Forever," "Feelin' Good Again" and "Merry Christmas From The Family," Keen has helped pave the way for the burgeoning Americana movement.
+
With the release of his latest album, “Happy Prisoner: The Bluegrass Sessions,” Keen has proven himself a more than capable bluegrass singer. Kicking off with a boot-stomping version of Flatt & Scruggs' "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" and a revved-up, fiddle-driven take on Richard Thompson's "52 Vincent Black Lightning," Keen takes listeners on a 15-song ride (20 songs on the deluxe version) that embraces the many lyrical and musical colors in the bluegrass spectrum. There are prison songs ("99 Years For One Dark Day"), murder ballads for the guilty and innocent ("Poor Ellen Smith" and "Long Black Veil"), tales of unrequited love (a lilting cover of the Carter Family's "East Virginia Blues"), gospel tunes ("This World Is Not My Home"), yodeling tunes (a duet with Lyle Lovett on Jimmie Rodgers' "T for Texas"), waltzes (the mournful "White Dove") and songs of country life (a take on Tommy Thompson's "Twisted Laurel"). And, of course, there are special nods to the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe ("Walls of Time" and the moving "Footprints In The Snow"). The album has spent three weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Bluegrass Albums chart.
+
In the midst of his U.S. tour in support of the album, the GRAMMY Museum welcomes Keen to the Clive Davis Theater as part of the Americana Series for an intimate performance and discussion surrounding his career and new album, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of MusiCares and the GRAMMY Foundation.

Named “the greatest songwriter that has ever lived” by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin is known for innumerable classics including “God Bless America,” “White Christmas,” and “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails.” Hershey Felder’s masterful creation of character and musical performance makes this evening with Irving Berlin an unforgettable journey.
